There are specific criteria for where I go on vacation:

 - I need to be able to order and eat a ham sandwich
 - I need to be able to buy and drink a beer
 - I refuse to shiat into a hole in the floor

I realize that this limits my destinations and doesn't broaden my mind as well as going anywhere in the word, but I don't really care even a little bit.

Dubai is basically an international playground. You can get anything you could possible want, and things you couldn't even imagine, but you have to stay away from the locals.

I quess Dubai is probably a pretty place with lots of nice resort type stuff.
But I am not (not that I could afford to) go to a place where even the slightest flub up of local laws can get you thrown in prison for extended periods of time.
And yes I realize that no place likes it when people break their laws. But over there the laws are far reaching into territories that I have have gotten used to having as basic human rights.

License to drink?  In Dubai?
*read that  link*
How do you get a license to license this license in that country?

I'll never go there.

Dubai's inferiority complex is creepy.  Every building has to be the tallest or biggest or make some outlandish claim.

These people stay away from the locals in Dubai too:

Once, I need to fly Emirates first class, and stay a few days at one of Dubai's "6 star" hotels...
Having some one person to clip your toenails and some one other person whose only job is to wipe your ass is a level of exploitation I think everyone should experience.  Especially ass wipe guy.

Yeah, I've thought about going there to teach EFL, because they pay ridiculous salaries. Every time I read something like this, it just reminds me why it's a bad idea.

Dubai has toilets, for sure.  But what they don't have, is an adequate sewage system.  They use "Poop Trucks".

No / limited sympathy.  The laws of UAE on alcohol and displays of affection in public are VERY f'ing documented.  They're retarded but if you go to a backwards retarded country obey their laws unless you don't mind being punished.

Just think of all those delicious foods at affordable prices.
You don't need to go to the UAE to live in luxury, just your local Arby's.

Dubai was crossed off my vacation list when they threw a man in jail for having the tiniest bit of pot in the cuff of his pants.

Yes, having cuffs on your pants IS a crime.  But the pot is ridiculous.

Also, the kissing a girl on a beach is derpastan.

Seriously, go eat some bacon.

Dubai, where you can get arrested for OTC sleep aids, to say nothing of your prescription meds or poppy seeds.

I frequently have to catch a connecting flight in Dubai, and our security folks always warn us that any medication, ANY, is a risk if you carry it through Dubai.  So no, I'll not be vacationing there, for that plus a whole host of human rights issues.

And the immigrant labor? They're recruited from countries with plenty of beachfront property, but little investment. Tourist accomodations can employ only so many bellhops and cabana boys ever so happy to deliver a european or westerner another alcoholic beverage. Those sky-scrapers are financed by substantial suburban commuters seeking ever larger square foot space in an SUV and half a century of replacing every item previously made of either metal or wood with a sleek, smooth polyhydrocarbon feel.

They COULD, but it's about appearances and veneer, NOT proper infrastructure.

I worked with a guy who revealed that he was fluent in Arabic. I asked why he was so fluent in Arabic, and he said he lived and worked in Dubai for about 3 years. I asked him how that was, and he just shook his head and said "fark that place, man."

I'd kinda like to visit Dubai before it falls back into the sand.  Even without doing any significant research, I know I don't want to mess with boozing it up there.  I'd probably hire a local to drive me around and keep me out of trouble when I leave the hotel.

lolz.

Middle Eastern countries are fascinating. Doha International Airport in Qatar has the strangest penalties for smoking in a non-smoking area, a fine of $100USD or 6 months in prison or both. That penalty escalates quickly!

Slavery was very well documented too, and we ended that shiat. Dubai brought it back.

It's time to call a spade a spade: Dubai is backwards. They can build as many buildings as they want, they still are archaic and repressive.

If we cared about human rights for real we'd cut all ties with Dubai, refuse to grant visas to their diplomats, shun their international events, and sink their ventures abroad with punitive legislation. Only we'd never do that because oil. So the UAE remains as crooked as 1930's Atlantic city.
