What a coincidence. They're the same states that are the most conservative and religious.

And racist. And homophobic. And sexist.

Yes, we're getting along just fine in Michigan with making meals out of Bison Dollars, tears, rust and snow all boiled in a pothole on I-94.

Oh and going out to the mailbox on your Obama paid motorscooter is not a job.

And sucking off their third cousin is not a job either, unless they get paid the going rate of possum and grits plus a chicken.

AND a chicken?!?! Damn, I have been seriously undercutting the market.

HeadLever: ProfessorOhki: Yeah, Cali's population distribution is sort of extreme.

Here is Idaho's

[upload.wikimedia.org image 600x600]

~35% of the state has a population density less than 1.  I grew up right in the middle of it.

Yeah, I knew Idaho was an isolated redneck wasteland, but this piqued my curiosity.  It makes Oklahoma look downright metropolitan.

upload.wikimedia.org

Heck, it makes Oregon look metropolitan, and that state's got 20 quite large, basically empty counties.  Seriously, drive Boise to Portland on US 26 at the right time of day, you can make it through daylight without seeing another soul the entire length.

mikebdoss: HeadLever: lostcat: I do enjoy them, but the story was indicative of my total experience. Moving back to a place where "cheese fries" (pizza without sauce) was the height of culinary expression, and I had my choice of two "Oriental" restaurants, provided I was willing to drive to the next county for one of them...I just couldn't go back to that after knowing how much was out there to explore.

Yeah, I am just joking.  Folks have differing taste and there is quite a bit to offer in Cali.  However, I am not a partial to 90% of it and have a completely different set of standards that I consider important.

For me; spent a little bit of time in the midwest and didn't hate it.  Spent a little time in Cali and there are TOO MANY DAMN PEOPLE!!!

California is HUGE. Absolutely enormous. There are plenty of places within a 20 mile drive of "too crowded" that are effectively "rural". The majority of the state is empty and open.

Barstow, here I come!!!!  Yee haw!

Wealthy, educated, all four major sports teams have won a championship in the past 10 years, low divorce rates, lower rates of obesity, best schools in the western hemisphere (with possibly the exception of Finland).

Massachusetts, fark yeah.

I'm not in mood to run down folks who are feeling run down, so I'm going to guess what's going on in the happy states:

HI - Fish.  Surfing.  Sea turtles.  All kinds of reasons to be happy.  You don't think folks travel thousands of miles out to tiny islands in the middle of the ocean just for the hell of it, do you?
CO - Rocky Mountain High, just like John Denver said.
MN - Still think Garrison Keillor is amusing.
UT - Mormons do tend to have sunny dispositions.
VT - No idea what goes on there.  I hear it's pretty in the fall and winter.
MT - Like Utah but without the LDS.
NE, IA - It's all good as long as the crops come in, and if they don't, you just deal.
NH - Like VT, but more irascible.
MA - Ancestors came over on the Mayflower.  Plus money.

We are still using 19th century terminology if Ohio is a "midwest state". Get with the program, America. Dump the East Coast bias.

Two of the true midwest states (Iowa & Minnesota) rank as the least depressed, so the headline's thesis is b.s.

Iowa and Minnesota also happen to be a lot more liberal (except the Bachmann supporters) than the Dakotas and a lot less drunk than Wisconsin...
