Wealthy, educated, all four major sports teams have won a championship in the past 10 years, low divorce rates, lower rates of obesity, best schools in the western hemisphere (with possibly the exception of Finland).

Massachusetts, fark yeah.

California is HUGE. Absolutely enormous. There are plenty of places within a 20 mile drive of "too crowded" that are effectively "rural". The majority of the state is empty and open.

Sorry, no.  No, there are not.  I guess if you live in Riverside or Oxnard or Tracy or Hollister, then yeah.  You can drive 20 miles to get away.  If you live anywhere that is even remotely convenient to a good job, then no, you are boned.

And we don't measure travel in distance here - we measure it in time.  It takes 3 hours to get anywhere remote.

It isn't all the midwest that is depressed, just Ohio and those close to it.

Without the U.P. we would be more depressed.  Oh wait, we got that for not getting Toledo.

/the southern states get to blame Mississippi

These are also the states that get the most federal aid and contribute the least in taxes.  If we could jettison the 10 worst-performing states in America, this country would be great.

We are still using 19th century terminology if Ohio is a "midwest state". Get with the program, America. Dump the East Coast bias.

Two of the true midwest states (Iowa & Minnesota) rank as the least depressed, so the headline's thesis is b.s.

Oh and going out to the mailbox on your Obama paid motorscooter is not a job.

And sucking off their third cousin is not a job either, unless they get paid the going rate of possum and grits plus a chicken.

Look for percentages of people without healthcare.  I hypothesize people without it are less likely to get prescription medicines.

Actually the US is not even in the top ten.

No homework ever, no standardized tests and no more than 12 kids per class.

America's solution....free breakfasts, fifty kids per class, go to school year round and standardized tests.   bwhahahahahahaaa!!!  Absolute farking losers.

Ohio is a midwest state according to the US Census Bureau.

http://www.census.gov/geo/www/us_regdiv.pdf

As are 35% of the country's happiest states.  Where's the outcry about the despair in the Middle Atlantic?  We'd probably be better off defining it by the Nine Nations hypothesis.  Dixie and The Foundry are hurting.  The Breadbasket, not so much.

Want to know how I know the Daily Fail didn't look at the Pacific Northwest?  You know you're doing something wrong when over half the episodes of COPS were filmed in just the four Pacific Northwest states.  Consistently saddest episodes are the ones filmed in Portland, Oregon and Kodiak City, Alaska.

It's stuff like this that reminds me just how fricking GIGANTIC the United States is... I've been fortunate enough to travel a bit and see the differences between the regions.  Makes me think that if these fat unhappy unemployed farkers in Mississippi would spend their last $50 to get on a Greyhound headed out West they could find a happier life.

Either that, or a different hell hole with a view of the back of a Denny's rather than a view of the McDonald's parking lot.
