I actually quite miss the midwest.  California is making my balls itch more and more every day.  The bad itch.

People living in your freaking lap.

Please pull up under my window with your stereo loud and yap on your phone for 15 minutes.

I'm not in mood to run down folks who are feeling run down, so I'm going to guess what's going on in the happy states:

HI - Fish.  Surfing.  Sea turtles.  All kinds of reasons to be happy.  You don't think folks travel thousands of miles out to tiny islands in the middle of the ocean just for the hell of it, do you?
CO - Rocky Mountain High, just like John Denver said.
MN - Still think Garrison Keillor is amusing.
UT - Mormons do tend to have sunny dispositions.
VT - No idea what goes on there.  I hear it's pretty in the fall and winter.
MT - Like Utah but without the LDS.
NE, IA - It's all good as long as the crops come in, and if they don't, you just deal.
NH - Like VT, but more irascible.
MA - Ancestors came over on the Mayflower.  Plus money.

///warning: this list was manufacted in a facility in which stereotypes may have been present

I do enjoy them, but the story was indicative of my total experience. Moving back to a place where "cheese fries" (pizza without sauce) was the height of culinary expression, and I had my choice of two "Oriental" restaurants, provided I was willing to drive to the next county for one of them...I just couldn't go back to that after knowing how much was out there to explore.

Yeah, I am just joking.  Folks have differing taste and there is quite a bit to offer in Cali.  However, I am not a partial to 90% of it and have a completely different set of standards that I consider important.

Very true.  Even though I may like to stereotypically like to cuss Cali, I have some good friends and there is some amazing country there.  For the most part, all of my trips have been to southern and coastal parts.

For the most part I like to spend time in BFE.  Hard to consider much of Cali as BFE.

So, apparently things vary a bit year by year....

Sorry, no.  No, there are not.  I guess if you live in Riverside or Oxnard or Tracy or Hollister, then yeah.  You can drive 20 miles to get away.  If you live anywhere that is even remotely convenient to a good job, then no, you are boned.

And we don't measure travel in distance here - we measure it in time.  It takes 3 hours to get anywhere remote.
