The Great EZE: Do what you gotta do, man. I don't want a team I like to try to fit loyalty under a salary cap.

It all evens out. Back in the day the Bears got Alan Page from Minnesota when he was old and worn-out, although back then the Vikings still played proper outdoor football and not nancified high tea under a dome.

Hasn't Urlacher missed something like half of the last 2 seasons with injuries? He won't end up with the Vikings.

I will bet he will go to Dallas, where Jerry Jones still thinks he can get miracle seasons out of older stars.

He played 12 games last year and 16 the previous two seasons. The Bears are losing a lot of good faith with fans, if they struggle early next year it's gonna be ugly.

Oh, for fark's sake, this is the NFL.  It's a business.  Your contract's up, your contract's up.  The team will be more than happy to cut you lose the moment you're no longer able to play at a high enough level; you'd be stupid not to treat them with the exact same level of loyalty.  Get as much money as you possibly can, playing for whomever you can.

yeah, if you're loyal to him as a fan then let him get one last giant pay day with a clean conscience.  He gave you 13 seasons, you can forgive him for 1 or 2.

I was okay with Favre leaving, how he handled it was the shiatty part.

Urlacher wants 5.5 millionish.

Why the fark would we cut 36 year old Winfield, who had 110 tackles at 35 years old at 7.25 mill and then go after 35 year old Urlacher?

I think Urlacher will end up back with the Bears, although for substantially less money than he's looking for. His main value now is intangibles, and he'll bring more value to the Bears than anyone else. The knee and hamstring injuries slowed him up a lot this year. As recently as 2011 he was still covering the middle pretty solidly, but that player is gone.

Let's be clear here, Urlacher WOULD be an upgrade over Jasper Briknely. Considering we aren;t even resiging that guy, Urlacer wouldn;t be any worse then what we had last year.

I just don;t understand the priorities this team though. Cut one old guy who's getting "overpaid" to bring in another with the same problem? Makes you look pretty stupid frankly.

McMahon, Favre and Longwell all had productive years here. Longwell won multiple games for us even.

2013-03-14 10:23:05 AM
I'm going with this being a negotiating tool.  Da Bears don't like ex-Bears ending up on NFC North rosters.  By talking with a nearby team (NFC North), it shows that Urlacher is serious about considering other offers, but pressuring Da Bears to make a plunge for a little more than they may want to in order to prevent a rival from acquiring someone who knows the entire defense like the back of his hand.

If an NFC North rival gets Urlacher...he's basically a 'How-To-Win' manual.

I wouldn't worry about that much. With a completely overhauled offense this year and a defense that'll need to adjust in a couple of years as well the intel he'd be abel to provide is pretty much worthless.

It's kind of funny, because earlier this year Urlacher even said in an interview that he's gone from the guy who makes all the tackles to being the "high-5 guy" (the guy who high-5's the guy who made the tackle). So he knows that the end is near. He said he'd retire this year if the Bears get to the Super Bowl (back when the Bears were racking up wins against bottom-barrel teams early in the season).

I can't fault the guy for seeing what his value is worth around the league, and you never know what a Jerry Jones-ish owner will lavish on a big-name, past-his-prime guy for a good-bye paycheck.  I really can't see him moving to another team at this point, I think he knows that this next year will be it as a player and then wind up as a linebacker coach somewhere. That might even be part of the sales pitch while shopping around.

I can't believe they didn't make a stronger play for Welker.  Harvin had to go, and we got a good return.  Winfield is like 36 and counted for about 6mil (?) against the cap.  There's still offseasoon left for them to make some moves.

It's funny.  All these Minny fans:  "Come play with the best RB in the league!"  Yes, because if there's one thing a WR wants, it's to play on a team with a game-managing QB whose offense features the RB.

The derp is strong with Minnesota fans.

Jennings is doing this to increase the offer from the Packers.  And I have no problem with him doing it.  Pay the good man, TT!

I wouldn't mind having Urlacher back in a Bears uniform, though not for the amount of money he's probably looking for. The Bears don't have much room to work with cap-wise, so they have to be smart about where they spend the rest of their money, and filling the huge holes at TE and LT just ate up a lot of their cap room. They could try getting Julius to rework his monster contract to be more cap friendly, but I doubt that's gonna happen.

/they're in this predicament because Jerry Angelo couldn't draft for shiat
//no, I don't want Manti Teo either

At the same time we're going to have some serious cap issues next year and we need to think defense.  We have 3 really good receivers (yes jones, you got upgraded to really good.  DONT FARK IT UP), and now we have a historically dependable RB.   think Jennings should not be our priority and definitely not worth more than 10mil.

How-to-Win against the Bears.  V1.0
On Defense:
Double cover Brandon Marshall.
Blitz one linebacker from varying spots, their O-Line is worthless, you'll get 10+ sacks a game.
They'll never score.

On Offense:
Rush the ball over and over until you get one field goal.
Just kneel on the ball the rest of the game.

On Special Teams:
Kick all punts straight out of bounds.

The Bears go 0-16 losing all games 0-3.

Nah, Tillman is going to punch the ball out and run the fumble back for 6.  Just kneel on it, 3 points is plenty.  The Bears aren't going to score if you blitz a LB and double Brandon Marshall.

I guess - just seems like the Bears worst down is " - and 12" or "- and 8"   Catch it, go down.  No punch from Tillman and no worry about the Bears ripping at the ball for 4 yards as you run it time and again.

I'm a Chiefs fan for some reason, and not a Cassel apologist, but I do think a lot of the problems he had in KC had to do with coaching and not necessarily his game management skills. The Chiefs were just a tragic mess last year in a lot of different ways, obviously. But under a better coordinator, Cassel actually played well enough to make a Pro Bowl.

If KC had kept him, as a starter I think he would have drastically improved under Reid.

While amusing, Ponder only gets 33%

When your #1 option 8 yards down the field is either Michael jenkins or Aromoshadu(?), your life sucks.

Yes, he needed to get the ball to Rudolph more. Thing is, he either had 2 or 8 catches.

Yeah, lol, after taking a moment to compose myself, this probably does it for their cap, his numbers over the past few years have declined, and their D is still ass.  Yes, I realize my team's D set new standards for assitude this year, but.  Just gotta hope their picks this year don't pan out and also suck.  That said, he's definitely better than Turner and IIRC he stomps the Saints D every time they played the Rams.  So it does suck, but it's not the end of the world.  Schefter immediately invoking the Greatest Show on Turf, however, is an early preview of Year 4: THIS IS THEIR YEAR!!!11 from the media, always great, heh.

Have to see how it goes.  For the moment, I'm just enjoying Steelers fans apparently being quite upset over losing Lewis, that's usually a good sign of quality, hehe.

What do you say to the guy who's going from Aaron Rodgers to Ponder/Cassel except, "Here's a blank check, I'll see you in July." And that's assuming Speilman is serious about signing him and it isn't a PR ploy to look like they actually tried to do something.

I mean really, how do you convince a top tier receiver that they are going to be happy with the quarterback situation the way it is and one of the best running backs of all time coming off one of the greatest seasons of all time?

If he is as goodas he thinks he is, he has to think that being in single coverage constantly means he can make a mediocre qb look like an all pro.

I remember when everyone was losing their shiat trying to add him after that opening game. People talking about how they were going to start him at WR1 the next week. People bragging they had the foresight to start Ogletree in Week 1 and showing their point totals. Ha. Anyone starting Ogletree was starting him because they were desperate at WR that week.

I told them to pump the brakes, Ogletree had a good night and showed some potential but he'd been disappointing before and would probably continue to do so. No telling how many points that dud-to-stud-to-dud transition cost fantasy kneejerkers.

I failed at grabbing him, but I thought he was going to be the annual Dallas WR 3 that becomes a FF hero.  Austin, Robinson (nobody grabbed him and he had a pretty solid season that year), and then Ogletree had that game.  I don't blame people for picking him up, if not just for speculation but bragging is waaay over the top.

No worries about whiffing on him because of the "Dallas WR3" angle. Laurent Robinson proved that to be true - but Ogletree was always sort of a fark-up. I feel the same way about Ogletree as I do about Marty B.

Based on what exactly?

FA and the draft arent over, so it seems fairly hard to gauge the nfc south right now.

Unless the saints magically get more cap room and their draft picks back, or payton and rob (no the other one) can work some coaching miracles, possibly if the bucs can somehow free agency themselves up a defense id still say the falcons are the favorites going forward.

Mateorocks: digistil: robsul82: The Matt Cassel Era dawns in Minnesota.  Perhaps just for the clipboards.

Thank god.

I'm a KC guy that's been skeptical of him since day one, and I think he was mediocre at best. A couple of things about that Pro Bowl year:

1) It was done against the third-easiest schedule in the history of the league
2) He had the lowest YPA of any starting QB that year
3) As teams figured him and the system out late in the year, he got crushed (see the Oakland and Baltimore games)
4) He was the fifth QB selected for the Pro Bowl in the AFC that year (after Brady, Manning, Rivers, and Roethlisburger, who was playing in the Super Bowl)
5) He had the benefit of playing with one of the best RBs and WRs in the game, or at the very least top-10 each. Rodgers, Brees, Brady, etc. have done far more with less (which I realize is a high standard, but it also

I feel a LOT better with Smith and Daniel in the fold than Cassel and any of his backups.

No point in the Bears spending any money on him.  It does not matter how much your defense sucks if you have a middling level talent asshat at QB.

Anyone who knows what they are watching can tell that Urlacher can't run anymore.  For what the Bears would get, he's asking too much money.  The Bears rightfully didn't counter, letting him see what kind of offers he can get elsewhere.  Probably won't be much.

In football you don't pay for what someone has done, it's what they will do.  Anyway, they've redone Urlacher's contract a couple of times.  He really has nothing to complain about.

And Urlacher ~isn't~ complaining. Not in the slightest. He has fully admitted he isn't going to get a big contract or big money, and also said he'll probably retire if the Bears don't take him back. He is fully aware of the situation, and just biding time.

The Bears are also very aware of what Urlacher would bring to the table in a one or two year deal, leadership. With a complete coaching staff change, having his eyes and his leadership on the field is an intangible that would transcend the loss of speed. With Roach gone, I'll take a 60-70% Urlacher over the next best option.
