The House GOP has nothing to fear because they know the majority of them will be re-elected in 2014 due to the 2010 redistricting and the lackadaisical attitude of the majority of Obama/Dem voters who won't show up at the polls in a mid term. They can meanwhile reap rewards from the lobbyists paying them to vote against the interests of the American people, while being supported by the people of their own district. It's complete insanity.

I foresee the sequester staying in effect for a long time. The GOP wants to draw the country further right, and they have the political polarization to stay at crazytown while the Dems try to hold steady at 'moderate'. It's an ugly game of tug of war and no one really wins in the end.

It does kind of feel like everyone wants the president to fix it by giving them everything they want.

That's our congress for you.

Here is the real problem with entitlement cuts, it's basically saying:

"The middle class really didn't think they'd be allowed to screw themselves over in favor of helping the rich get richer and get away with it did they? It's time to make them pay for that."

I know you and everyone here already know this but...News Flash: The President Can't Pass Legislation

Why the hell is everyone thinking it's a failure on Obama's part? He's not a master negotiator, and even if he were, he's not going to suddenly abandon the principles he ran on. He's tried just about everything to get sides to come together, this is all theater at this point. Going to lunch with Congress. Speaking to the White House press corps. Asking people to write their Congresspeople (like that will make any difference at all). He could go back on the campaign trail and say what he's been saying all along, but that's not going to solve this.

Don't negotiate with terrorists. Stop trying. Just go out there and say 'The GOP is ruining this country' and give speech after speech about it over and over until you break them. Don't pull punches. Don't try to please them. Attack them. Polarize the country. Piss off the GOP. And bloody the whole lot of them in 2014.

Personally, I want "them" to fix it by no longer trying to give everyone everything they want.  We as a nation have already made promises that if kept will take government expenditures above 50% of GDP in the next few decades.

What I want is for someone to go to the American people and state straight up, "Yeah, about that entitlement program.  Those guys who said you could have that money were drunk assholes who knew that promise couldn't be delivered, but it got your vote, they got their money and power and now it's been left to a new group to either pretend the problem doesn't exist or make the painful changes required."

Of course, after saying that you can't get elected, so instead we're going to pretend it's not an issue until it's far too late.

as much as I would love to see this happen, the GOP knows how to play the victim and can do so successfully while beating an old woman with a small child. If he does that, he probably has a 50/50 shot of having it blow up in his face and do you really want to see what Congress is like if the GOP had both House and Senate? *shudder*

At this point, what needs to be done is you need to keep people informed about what's going on and pray to farking god they don't blow off the 2014 election. The thing that'll kill the Democrats the most is if the people that came out for them so overwhelmingly in November blow off 2014

Needs the other question first.

'President Obama, who are you?'

SSI Reform: Remove the income cap and check back in 20 years to see if you really need to means test.
Medicare Reform: Turn into national healthcare option and use size to control costs.  Check back in 20 years to see if you need to completely nationalize.

OK, entitlement reforms are done.  What's next?

Anyone who votes to cut Social Security in any way/shape/form may as well go on the Witness Protection Program.

Except you don't have to do that.  Entitlements are easily fixable, the GOP just likes to think the world is collapsing.  First of all, Social Security is not contributing to our debt.  Sure it will awhile down the road, all you have to do is remove the payroll tax cap.  Fixed.

Medicare can be fixed in several ways.  The most obvious is to simply expand it to the entire population and implement real cost controls.  For some reason, Medicare is required to pay 30 dollars or whatever ridiculous price hospitals charge for aspirin.

Despite the rhetoric, entitlement cuts don't have to be made.

Back when Social Security was "fixed" in the 70s to account for the baby boomers they forced the trust fund to invest in Treasuries.  That money going into the treasury was used to lower income tax rates.  Now that Social Security is in a position to require that money back, the only way for the government to cover that money is to either borrow money or to raise income tax rates.

This is the part where stupid ass morons say "but we owe that money to ourselves so it's not a problem!"  It is a problem because for Social Security to remain funded your income tax rate must go up.  That's before any additional expenditures.  Add to that the interest bomb when rates begin to normalize after QE stops and tax rates or borrowing will have to skyrocket.

Yeah, we can save money by cutting defense, but even if we were to half the defense budget it wouldn't begin to close the gap that's going to be there within the next decade.

What they wanted was Obama out of the White House now they are screwed as he won and the distractions they were trying to use to get rid of him did not work so they will have to back-peddle away.

The Greenspan Commission reforming Social Security took place in 1983, not "the 70's."  The rest of your post can be considered to be just as informed.

And Reagan appointed the commission right after he was sworn in in 1981 because it was a problem that people had been trying to solve for nearly a decade and Carter was afraid to touch it. I'd like to live just long enough to be there when they cut off your head and stick it on a pike as a warning to the next ten generations that some favors come with too high a price. I would look up into your lifeless eyes and wave, like this...

Can you and you're associates arrange that for me, Mr. Boehner?

Sorry, mine was directly from memory because it's something I CARE about and thanks to folks like you who so often get it wrong.

Only one of Google-ing was you because you got checked. :)

Nice try at a save, though.  Once again- you clearly know little about the issue.  More the shame you decided to soapbox it.  Que embarazoso!

You're the one who said I was wrong when I stated that Social Security is invested 100% in treasuries and we're going to have to raise taxes or borrow (incurring massive interest which will require increasing tax rates) to pay that back. Explain for me how that's wrong in any way.

You are essentially complaining about spelling as an ad-hominem to avoid addressing the content of what I've posted.Your position, that the fix was implemented after the 70s so therefore everything else I've written is incorrect, is specious at best.

In other words, continue the strategy of the past 5 years. Fold your arms, deny the GOPs humanity, demonize anyone who disagrees with your policies, make bargains and then renege on them, behave like a selfish untrustworthy asshole, then biatch about how you can't get anything done.

Considering that's what the GOP has been doing for the last 20 years, and the Democrats are *just now barely* managing to talk back - Sure, whatever you say!
