(BBC)   For the first time in 17 years, there will be no English clubs in the quarterfinals of the Champions League. But it's OK, because finishing in 4th place in this year's English Premier League is a bigger deal anyway   (bbc.co.uk) divider line 118

Three English teams into the quarterfinals. Not too shabby

Norfolking Chance: drewogatory: You suck and you are holding back Arsenal.

If you believe this you're an idiot. Arsenal is practically a model for how a team should be run and maybe excepting Barca they are the best run club outside of Germany (which due to their rules is far,far and away the best run league in the world).

Off the pitch Arsenal is one of the most stable clubs financially in Europe yes but on the pitch Wenger has had the money to spend to bring in players to keep them fighting for the top but he hasn't spent it. It's sad to see a manager grow stale but still insists on following the same dogmatic formula that brought him success a decade ago but that has happened at Arsenal. The longer Wenger stays at Arsenal the longer they will struggle to get into the CL and without silverware filling the Emirates will become more and more difficult. Another CL season like this one and England will only get three CL places and do you see the current Arsenal being ahead of Chelsea or Man City? Plus Spurs and Liverpool are now starting to fire and are looking like overtaking Arsenal as well.

SAF had lost the best player in the PL two years ago and what happened? Lost the league on goal difference last season and is now clear and now looking like they will win it this year. Just by spending money smartly on RvP, Kagawa and others to strengthen his squad. Who has Wenger brought in to replace Nasri (IAC) and RvP? No one close to their ability. At one time you could mention Wenger and Ferguson in the same breath but now people will look at you funny if you said both managers were equal.

There is zero chance of England losing the 4th CL spot after next season unless they're stripped of a spot for off-field irregularities.

Champions League quarterfinals:

Real Madrid vs Galatasaray
Malaga vs Borussia Dortmund
PSG vs Barcelona
Bayern Munich vs Juventus

Note: they did not to a semifinal draw. That will happen next month after the quarters.

All seem like pretty interesting matchups, with BM/Juve taking the cake. Any explanation for why they are holding off the draw for the semifinals? Hate to feed into the conspiracy claims that the uefa draws are fixed to boost interest, but the only reason i can think to delay the semifinal draw is if you where waiting to see who goes through so that you can fix the draw to boost interest...

ya that looks about right. Wish Ibra wasn't suspended for the first leg, as it would make a PSG upset a lot more plausible.

I thought The Zlatan was back, was only suspended for one match?  I dont think PSG could overturn Barca after watching them dismantle Milan this week, though there will be goals aplenty.  Zlatan taking on Puyol?  Sounds like a video game.

just looked it up and apparently his suspension is up for review at the end of the month, but as it stands he's currently missing the first leg in paris. I'd almost feel sorry for puyol if villanova/roura put stopping the swedish pirate squarely on his aging shoulders. He's been rather exposed in recent months

And Europa League quarters...

Chelsea vs Rubin Kazan
Tottenham vs Basel
Newcastle vs Benfica
Lazio vs Fenerbahce

For some reason, I feel like Europa League will gain a lot more stature this year on fark....

With the way Zlatan roams it will fall on his shoulders eventually.

I wish I watched enough of the Europa League to make predictions there, but considering the English teams representing I guess its important to their media again.  Seems like fairly pedestrian foes against them, albeit.  I would make some guesses but in the end, who cares?  Because I don't want the English to have any hardware I'm going with Lazio to pull some upset in the final against Chelski.  Torres misses 5 penals.

Haha!  My thoughts exactly, see above post.

It seems as if Europa is getting more coverage than usual (that could just be me becoming a domestic engineer and being able to watch the games. Loving the chips league matchups. If there is one thing we've learned about Barca this campaign is that they do have weaknesses and can be beat. If you look back, AC Milan was 1 meter from advancing (I know, that's soccer).

But i think I'll be rooting for PSG and Gala. Either of them would be tremendous champs.

Oh and I also concur that the draws are probably fixed. I don't understand how I can continue to love the shiat out of a sport that is so obviously dirty.

I'm afraid you'll be finding out just how fixed the "competition" is, neither of those sides will even see the semis.

Seeing as you are Scouser you should know why you're seeing more of the EL this year, your media is gobbling it up!

/By the way, this domestic engineer role sounds good, whats it take?  Impregnation I assume?

You could go the impregnation route. We did. We also had the combination of the wife making more money and my teachers pay being predominantly earmarked for childcare if I were to continue working. I prefer to taking care of the little buckaroo myself rather than pay somebody else to juggle her with 12+ other germ monkeys and we're blessed enough to be able to pull that off.

If you're neat and a good enough cook you could try and sell your SO the fact that if you stayed home, she would have awesome meals and a consistantly clean house dramatically increasing her happiness and standard of life. Always worth a try.

But in all honesty...it's a lot of work but I love the hell out of it.

You think? Bayern-Dortmund is becoming as much of a must-watch rivalry as Barca-RM. I don't see Juventus playing into that. I think it'll be the two German teams and the two Spanish teams. How they draw out is anyone's guess.

A lot of good teams have already been knocked out to get to these eight. I think there are a lot of groups (so a lot of matches) which makes it harder to to see stand out clubs, but I am still very happy with the format. A second tier to the CL is needed.

Anyway, I think Newcastle, Fenerbahce or Benfica could take it. Spurs would be nice, but I think they secretly still are focused on the top 3 while assuring everyone they take the EL seriously. Chelsea we know are lying through their teeth when they say so.

And another thing, having so many English clubs still in the EL will mean the English country and each club's coefficient will not slide very much
