1. Tobacco is a cash crop with whatever markup you want.  Wheat... isn't, because no government wants to be the one where a year's supply of bread costs more than a year of the average salary when they deregulate the markets.

2.  The world's not starving, regional food shortages are typically distribution difficulties more than supply difficulties.

3.  The US has a  gigantic food surplus that we intentionally maintain to keep up our global political and business influence.

Because at least in the US the vast majority of tobacco farms shut down in the '90's.  The tobacco industry is a shell of its former self, at least from the farming perspective.

I'm in Kentucky, that was prime tobacco territory.  In my childhood in the '80's you could drive around the state and most farms grew burley tobacco.  It was well accepted that if you lived in the country and went to high school, in the spring you could get excused from class if you were working on the tobacco crops.

Then in the late 90's the tobacco buyout happened.  Part of the big Master Settlement Agreement with the industry as I understand it.  Most tobacco farmers got a buyout from the Federal government to permanently get out of tobacco.  Most moved over to growing corn and soy.

There used to be loads of tobacco warehouses in Lexington, just to the west of the University of Kentucky campus, near Angliana and Broadway. . .now I think there is just one or two left and the warehouses have been torn down and turned into apartment complexes for students.

Yeah, tobacco is still around in stores, but that was part of the whole agreement, that tobacco companies wouldn't be exterminated by the government in exchange for vastly reducing their scale.

So, tobacco is around because people are addicted to it and a government agreement to not destroy the industry.

As for sugar?  Relating to TFA?  Well, I would think that consumption of sugar may be dropping as people eat healthier.  Sugar-free option and low-sugar foods are popular.  Refined sugar is not good for you.  Combine that with the noxious sludge known as HFCS (made from the corn that is grown where they used to grow tobacco) displacing some sugar consumption and that's a problem.

Sugar itself is not easy to produce in the US.  The big reason HFCS became popular in the US as a sweetener was a law of unintended consequences problem.  Only a few places in the USA are good for sugar production, mostly along the gulf coast and Hawaii.  Even then, it's more expensive to produce it there than overseas, so foreign sugar is cheaper.  Tariffs make foreign sugar more expensive, so US producers are not run out of business.

However, that means that per-ounce, the US pays some of the highest prices in the world for sugar.  Food companies switched to HFCS instead for a sweetener, since its cheaper per-ounce (especially with the Federal corn subsidy).  Thus, US sugar still has trouble selling.

Basically, that vaunted Free Market?  It says the sugar market in the US should die because it's not profitable.  However, the same people who talk about Free Market are sure to bail out and prop up with subsidies businesses who should fail because of politics.

The only reason there is domestic sugar production is because the US subsidized the industry and increased tariffs on foreign sugar specifically to destroy Cuba's main export.  Without massive subsidies, it would be unprofitable to grow sugarcane (and a lesser extent, sugarbeet) in the US. Why are we giving tax dollars to the sugar industry (or corn, or soy?).

I have to admit the Freeish Market (or at least a less subsidized one) might be preferable to this; however in the short term killing those subsidies will bring a lot of strife to a lot of otherwise worthless small towns with no other economy. Not saying we shouldn't do this eventually but in the interim this needs addressing or at least preparation for.

Not agree with the sugar bailout but according to the article it cost us $3.5 billion a year.  Combined State and Federal means tested welfare spending (TANF, Food stamps , etc) will exceed $1 trillion.  The Sugar bailout needs to stop and means tested welfare spending needs to be cut.

Here's a wild idea: can corn subsidies that artificially depress the cost of HFCS, and kill the  stupid cane sugar import tariffs (that are in place largely thanks to the corn lobby, to protect market share for HFCS). Let prices normalize across the board,  then re-implement targeted subsidies when and where necessary.

HFCS is normally 42% fructose or 55% fructose, the rest glucose. The name itself even includes fructose? (The "high" compares to regular corn syrup, which is almost pure glucose. Too bad we're not talking about that because no one eats it.) The difference compared to regular sugar is very small, although HFCS doesn't have to be broken down by sucrase first and thus absorbs a bit more quickly into the body.

Either one will spike your insulin levels. Either one will make you fat if you eat a lot of it. Both are wildly overused in American foods and snacks. Both are heavily subsidized by the government. The difference is miniscule except for the price, and if corn subsidies and sugar tariffs went away tomorrow, producers would switch back immediately and we'd still have all the same health problems we do today.

Drop the corn subsidies.

There is a difference.  HFCS does not react normally with the brain receptors like sugar.  So you don't get that "satifisied" feeling after you drink a big ass cup of soda.  Which is why people are drinking way too much of that shiat.  If I drink a Mexican Coke (made with real sugar and typically in a 12oz bottle), I'm good.  If I drink an American made Coke (HFCS, 16oz bottle), I want another.
