So Lonely

One sits and gazes out,
To the world beyond it's pen.
Sighs and lies once more upon the cold hard ground.

One sits in padded chair,
Seeing nothing,
Despairs

One hides in the back of the cage,
Head tucked under tail,
Too scared to visit.

One walks along,
Head down,
Worn out.

One gazes longing,
At the people drifting past.
Ignored, No longer a kitten.

One stands,
Alone in the crowd.
Invisible.

One slinks from trash bin to trash bin,
Confused.Hungry.
Alone but for the memory of warmth.

One comes forward on unsteady feet,
Takes a leash,
Come, you are going home.

One passes the cage,
Pauses and says a kind word.
A frightened animal lifts it's head.

One walks past,
Retreats,
Two quiet souls meet.

One lifts their head,
Spies a small furry one,
Crouches

Eyes meet.
Arms reach out.
It begins.

Update on Haruko! I just spoke with her. She does have gallstones. They will be doing another test tomorrow, she thinks. Right now she is a bit bleary with the meds. She has to be fasting for it, so it might actually be the laproscope. That is my guess.

She asked me to cll back later, as she had to deal with med staff.

Because IMHO, it is my hope that maybe people will finally realize this, and stop regarding cats (or pets in general) as disposable....

LOL... love my nephews to pieces but don't know how their parents do it!  Clearly parenting has its rewards, but when I see how tuckered out my sister is with little Stan, I wonder how I ever could have managed.  I can barely get out of bed to walk & feed the dog most days!  Being an auntie suits me just fine.  :)

I get to enjoy mind-bending cuteness....

sherpa18: Alpo 3000: Does anyone have an aquarium they keep for cat entertainment? I have been considering one but I'm worried about it being stressful on the fish, and I would need a very low maintenance aquarium.  Any thoughts?

I had a 35 gallon half-hex tank years ago, Merlin loved watching it. IMHE, no aquarium is "low maintenance". There is always filter and gravel cleaning, partial water changes and treatment (including PH monitoring), algae removal, maintaining proper aerration and temperature, and live plants are a pain the ass. However the fish never seemed to give a flying fark about the cat pawing at the glass. Just MHO, YMMV.

I will second Sherpa's sentiments -- fish are a LOT of work.  I had a small 10 gallon fishtank once, and I remember what a royal pain in the ass it was to care for more than I remember what kind of fish were in it.  Always cleaning, changing water, testing this & that, adding chemicals, changing filters, siphoning fish poop out of gravel twice a week, etc, never mind keeping the equipment working, plus feeding etc.  OMG.  And that was when I was younger and had energy.   Plus, fish are smelly.  Also, they're like any pet in that some freak out over the tiniest thing and others don't give a shiat, no matter what breed they are, so selecting ones that won't be bothered by a fascinated cat may be next to impossible.

My advice to you is don't get fish unless you really, really want fish.

As a teenager I lived in the same section of Pittsburgh as Fred Rogers. I used to see him out and about every once in a while.
One day I saw him with a small child (grandson I imagine.) The kid bolted out in the street and Fred was quick enough to save the little shiat. The tot received one well deserved light slap on the rump...nothing out of the ordinary that you don't see every day.

However, it occurred to me that this is "Mr. Rodgers"...If I could have captured the 'spanking' on film the national enquirer would provided me with at least a years worth of beer money.

/ I could never have done that anyway. He was a good man.

Anyway he says it might be that the hot/cold taps are open behind the decorative bezel, and that we need to caulk that up, then shoot a bead of caulk around the bezels..or whatever you call those silver thangs that attach to the wall behind the knobs...see..bezel is easier...:)

Question: Should it take more than two hours to cook these veg until done?

Long story with which I shall not bore you, but I'm suspecting some shenanigans... >:-(

For the veg? Um, not if it was on high. I had a problem like that not too terribly long ago and it was my slow cooker, which was an elderly, oft used slow cooker, decided its time had come. The cabbage especially should be done pretty quickly. If your potatoes and carrots were monster sized, they could still be a bit crisp, but a couple hours should have done the job in most cases.

I'd just nuke 'em to finish 'em off if they're still not done!

The pudding is tasting very very good! It's in the refrigerator cooling. The recipe really isn't mine. It was actually developed by Shane Philip Coffey, the chef at Alias restaurant on New York City's Lower East Side. Here is his story about how it came to be...

This rich and luscious dessert came about because I needed a special dessert for a St. Patrick's Day tasting menu. I was on a mission to use my favorite beer, Guinness, something I consider to be one of Ireland's gifts to the world.

As the 17th of March drew closer, I looked for inspiration at my favorite Irish pub in Manhattan. As I savored my pint, I saw a Guinness poster that said, "My Goodness, My Guinness!" It was like an angel sang in my ear: "What if you combined a dark chocolate pudding and Guinness, topped it with whipped cream lightly flavored with Guinness, and then put it in a glass to make it look just like a pint of the black?" After a few failed attempts, I got it just right.

Make the effort to find a good dark chocolate (about 70 to 72 percent cacao). The better the chocolate, the creamier the dessert. And, unless you have an Irish pub next door where you can pull it straight from the tap, a 14.9-ounce can of Guinness Draught works best.

Chocolate Guinness Goodness

Ingredients:

8 large egg yolks
1 cup sugar
One 14.9-ounce can Guinness Draught
3 cups heavy cream
7 ounces high-quality bittersweet (70 to 72% cacao) chocolate, finely chopped
Special equipment: Six 8-ounce old-fashioned glasses or Irish Coffee mugs

Preparation

In large nonreactive mixing bowl, whisk together egg yolks and sugar.

Open can of Guinness and slowly pour into 4-cup measuring cup, pouring down side of cup to reduce foaming.

Pour half of Guinness (about 7/8 cup) into heavy-bottomed 3-quart saucepan. Add 2 1/4 cups cream and whisk to combine.

Set over medium heat and heat, whisking occasionally, until bubbles just begin to form at edges. Remove from heat, add chocolate, and whisk until smooth.

Slowly pour hot chocolate mixture into eggs, whisking constantly to prevent curdling.

Return mixture to saucepan and set over moderately low heat. Cook, whisking constantly, until mixture thickens and coats back of spoon, about 15 minutes. (Pudding will look separated.)

Pour into blender and blend on high for 1 minute.

Divide pudding among glasses, leaving at least 1 inch of space at top of each. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until chilled and set.

Meanwhile, pour remaining Guinness into small saucepan and bring to boil over medium heat.

Reduce heat to moderately low and simmer, uncovered, until reduced to 1 tablespoon, about 20 minutes.

Pour syrup into small bowl and let cool.

Beat remaining cream until soft peaks form. Add Guinness syrup and beat until combined. Divide cream among 6 glasses of pudding and serve

and a cat to make up for the lengthy post...

Sent that e-mail re my chorus's risers for contest stage in midApr, "regretfully decline because." 1) Carpet not match from section to section, 2) join-together safety issues we're used to, others not, 3) help rarely available. Plumbicon often sole Aid Abet & Assistance. $ was offered, but not quite sure how/if we could hire strong teenage boys. New nearby chorus may be able to provide, suggested she who requested query them.

It was a VERY good morning for me. I had some nummy kolaches for breakfast. :-)

Man, I haven't had those in like, forever. I always did my closed rather than the more common open-faced version we see here. Then again, I'm famous for mixing my cuisines and so if you eat a kolache at my house, you've got a 50/50 chance of getting fruit filled or something involving chorizo and avocados. OM NOM NOM NOM!

We get ours from Chaos Kolaches in Springfield, Oregon. They have both sweet & savory versions.

This is what they had on the menu for this past Saturday (March 16th): For Sweet we have 14 flavors Blueberry, Strawberry, Raspberry, Fudge Brownie all with cream cheese, Apple Caramel, Caramel Cheesecake, Apricot, Sweet Cream Cheese, chocolate covered Cherry, Coconut,White Chocolate Mocha, Custard, Brie With Cran and Blueberries and Snickers. For Savory we have Felafel, Bacon egg and Cheese, Spicy SW Sausage, Terriyaki Meatball, and Smoke Turkey Sausage.

I got a caramel cheesecake & a Teriyaki meatball. My son got a Snickers kolache & a bacon, egg & cheese. He also picked up a 4 pack of their cinnamon rolls since they only have those on Saturday and they tend to run out of them really fast.

I just finished last week's thread and wanted to thank you all for the birthday wishes!  I had a good repeat of my 29th birthday - I figure if I repeat it enough, eventually the party will happen someplace great like Disney World or Atlantis...  My kid came over before I got home, took care of feeding all the critters, had set up my birthday present (a new wine rack which I will now fill with tasty wine - out  of respect for the gift, of course!  It's a good thing Central Virginia is such a great place for wine - no shortage of day trips to add to my collection!) and a flower bouquet.  She then took me out to a yummy dinner, and then I took her shopping at Trader Joe's.

I'm so sorry to hear this...but try to look at this way - Bea said screw this 3 months nonsense, I ain't ready to leave yet - and ended up giving you 3 more years together. You will both know when it is time.

Tola has decided that the best place to sit is behind daddy's monitor, in the dark, dusty corner of the desk. There's a spindle of CD's back there that she puts her head on like a pillow too.

I asked several weeks ago about moving water fountains for the kitties, but I haven't picked one up yet. They still have access to their toilet/tub/water bowl options, but the newest thing is to jump into the sink while I'm getting ready for work. I've been teasing them by turning the water on slightly, which Tola loves now that she's figured out how to drink from it. Anytime I'm in that bathroom becomes a "Tola water time nao?". Ivan can't figure out the moving water thing - he either sticks his ears in it, bites the stream of water, or just puts his paw under the running stream to lick. Pretty, but no brains. Tola is the evil mastermind of the two.

Here is Tola, giving no cares to the world behind the monitor.

May need to mention St Urho, who drove the grape-gobbling grasshoppers out of Finland, since it'll be his Day in under 30 minutes. I need to remember to wear purple & green for the occasion on the morrow. There are festivities of the Day in some mostly-Finn communities. Other Finns think he's merely a figtree of someone's well-oiled imagination.
The other critter not welcome on Caturday is almost surely the flying spider, mentioned before. I did GoodSearch that, which sorta confirmed that there are such in Chicago presently. Also led to this:

A Spider that Barks?
Selenocosmia crassipes, the so-called barking spider of Central Australia and the inland areas of New South Wales, is said to produce a barking sound. These reports were investigated by Sir Baldwin Spencer, who, although he rejected the barking theory, found that the spider produced a chirping or whistling sound by drawing the leg-like feelers or palps across the fangs (chelicerae). Examination under the microscope proved the palps to be studded with a great number of peg-like structures by which the sound is produced. This strange habit has possibly a courtship significance. It is regrettable that no further attempt has been made to study the life and habits of this remarkable spider, but this is true of many of our unique and rapidly disappearing animals

This came from The Australian Book of Wonder, or similar title.

syzygy whizz: John Buck 41: syzygy whizz: Simba and D'Artagnan (I'd have to back to find the date; why does Easter bounce all over the calendar, anyway?)

I do know the answer to this one!  Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon of Spring.
Since the moon is full after a week after...lessee...the 20th this month, you can figure we'll have an early Bunny-and-Egg Day.

Thank you for the kind thoughts, everybody.

Easter follows the Jewish calendar. It is always the week of Passover, which was the Seder meal Christ was having with his disciples.

I have a class that suggests the biophilia hypothesis (the urge to affiliate with other forms of life) is the cause of this. Since kitties are a little slice of the wild, I think they fit the mold quite well.

I don't care exactly why I guess, I just think that Caturday is a good representation of something primal and good within us.

It tames our inner beast as well. So fear not, weary traveler! You are among friends.

Brief tangent, my apologies. OK back to LOL cats.

Good Caturday weekend to everyone.  Sick week here at the B4 house.  Came down with the crud that my daughter so wonderfully gave me after getting sick all over me on Sunday night.  Finally able to breathe without feeling like I have a ventilator on my face.  But the two big pieces of news this week are first, Mrs. B4 celebrated her 39th on Tuesday with a day at the spa followed by a meal at her favorite diner.  But that was sandwiched between the spa visit, and the arrival of Papaya.  He/she (still not sure of the sex yet, but I'm leaning towards she) quickly entered the aquarium we had set up and hid.  Its been moving around some, eating a little, and already started to shed, so I'm guessing things are going well so far.  We've kept him isolated in the aquarium so far, and took off all the newspaper we had wrapped around the outside so we wouldn't overstimulate it.  Now everything is open, and the cats are kind of indifferent towards it, but the ferrets are going insane trying to climb up the outside to see what's in there.  Anyway, happy Caturday everyone and say hello to Papaya.

May we please haz some 'homing mojo' for D'Artagnan?
He's gone AWOL and I'm getting worried(er).

Raven and I got home from work Thursday morning, got mobbed by Wimsey and Riktor, called for D'Artagnan.
Way down the street, black flash caught my eye.
Focus...and my beautiful panther boy was running down the street towards home.
Said "Hi!"...then his attention was caught by something else and he went to check it out.

Didn't want to stand in the door all day while he was being a cat, so I went inside, figuring he'd come in the window when he was ready.
My next-door neighbor on the east side is an auto repair business, so I think D'Artagnan may have gotten into an interesting-smelling car... and gone for a ride he wasn't expecting.

I've been looking and calling for him, had the neighbors check their outbuildings, put an ad in the paper and called the animal shelter.

Been meaning to get him chipped again (he ditched the first one somehow)...but on his return he will become a cyber-cat as soon as I can get him to the Sainted Vet.

Come home, baby-kitty...I don't handle 'business trips' well.  :'-(

I'm still here, without photos, gave up trying. Maybe Cretinbob can add photos of the kittens we have and the kittens that should arrive any day. Have HUGE preggo cat ready to  pop, I keep on checking on her, no kittens yet tonight, maybe tomorrow.

We took in a new cat without ears yesterday, just stumps, looks like she had frostbite and lost most of her ears last year. We took in a cat in January with frostbit ears. She just lost the top of one ear yesterday, the other will also fall off soon. It takes a while from when the frostbite destroys the ear tissue until it falls off. When her other ear falls off and she's healed, then we can find her a good home where she'll live indoors forever, cozy and warm.

When these two are ready to be adopted I'm going to have a special on earless cats, maybe I can adopt them out as a pair. Very sweet cats, just have no ears left because some azzwipe people left them out in freezing temps.

We're getting a lot of calls from people dumping off their older cats lately. Cats over 10 years old are difficult to find homes for. I try to tell people all the time that cats can live to be over 20 years old and that they make great companions. I managed to find a home for a pair of Siamese cats age 7 and 12, but purebred cats always get adopted faster, even old ones.

Well it's time to go check on the pregnant one. Cats here love to start giving birth when I'm ready to try to get some sleep!

My sister used to squeeze her fat kitteh Frankie to get him to fart. She'd chase you up the hall with that cat's rear end pointed at you, like he was some sort of weapon. Is he as mellow as he looks?

Yes and no, he doesn't like strangers or anyone with a nasally voice but around me is is fairly laid back.

Our cat disliked most people, except my son and myself. However, on rare occasions she would approach a visitor in our home and cuddle up next to them. It tended to be male visitors over female, but we never could figure out why she was attracted to some, but shunned others, even though the latter were very nice people.

Pets can be weird like that. Jazzy (our 8 y/o Maltese/Pekinese mix--Malapeke?) despises my cousin and he has given her no reason whatsoever to act that way. I literally have to hold her in my lap the entire time he's here visiting, which sadly is rare, 'cos we're very close and he lives just a 1/4 mile away. Luckily she's good with kids. How/why this adorable lil thing hates Cousin Mike is beyond me. And why, yes, that IS a can of Rolling Rock in the left foreground.

Happy Caturday, everybuddy!

I finally got all my boxes shipped off today, with my sister's help which was much appreciated (even though she taped the wrong ends at first and forgot to put the Goodie Guide in each one, so it will be extra surprising this time), my almost husband may be getting out of the hospital tomorrow and I've already got the home health nurse out there to meet him (today in the hospital) and his hospital bed is being delivered tomorrow AND we have a schedule of various friends who will be hanging out with him so it doesn't all fall on me or leave him alone, and it looks like I'll be doing my first Really Big Deal Event cookin' and cheffin' stuff this summer (ka-ching!) AND!!! GoGo Beastie has made it all week without rolling in something foul smelling. w00t!

In celebration of this momentous event of me finally being caught up, and even ahead of schedule in some things by nearly a week, I went into my "nice person, extra happy and giving mode" and found the elderly Wadsworth kitteh what appears to be an elderly kitteh lady friend! Ain't she a looker? Stylish, too!
