politics..fun

2001-11-27 06:09:38 PM
the duh tag would be nice here.....

2001-11-27 06:09:45 PM
it's also nice that 'South Carolina's largest newspaper' calls them blacks.

2001-11-27 06:10:52 PM
Haven't Republicans in the South, since Nixon, run on the platform of keeping "them" from taking "our" rights and power? Why stop now? And just how goddam dumb would most blacks have to be to believe it, especially in South Carolina?

Boo Radley, Saraland, Alabama

2001-11-27 06:11:18 PM
Yeah, it should have called them browns.

2001-11-27 06:25:29 PM
I'm white. They're black.
White Americans don't call themselves European Americans do they? Why does Policital Correctness only pertain to certain people?

2001-11-27 06:26:34 PM
"Blacks by and large are kind of conservative....They are more conservative than they are liberal. But yet they vote Democrat because their church tells them to. It doesn't make sense."

Sure it makes sense:

Conservative = Don't upset the apple cart

2001-11-27 06:38:12 PM
What's wrong with "blacks?" I'm one of the "whites," but that doesn't mean I go to lengths to proclaim myself "European-American." And "African-American" is a misnomer anyway if you're talking about blacks, because there are lots of Arabs -n- Persian types in North Africa and white "settlers" in South Africa. Forget Political Correctness and Get Real.

2001-11-27 06:48:34 PM
I am from SC and I vote in every election. I dont vote Rep. or Dem. I vote for whomever I think is going to do the job that he/she is elected to do.

Can you tell what color I am?

2001-11-27 06:52:31 PM
...
oh, sorry. what was that article about?

2001-11-27 06:54:53 PM
Since I've become fairly close friends with a 'black' guy at work, I am no longer afraid of using that term. He uses it, I use it, no offense is meant or taken. Saying 'African-American' all of the time is a pain in the a$$ and sounds stilted and unnatural in regular conversation.

Not to mention -- isn't that kind of offensive in and of itself? He's no more African-American than I am Scottish- or German-American, since my grandparents immigrated from there. You don't usually call someone Japanese-American unless they (or perhaps their parents) were born in Okinawa or something.

2001-11-27 06:59:51 PM
Yeah I have a black friend who hates the term African American. His arguement is, "I was born in Florida not Africa, that makes me more Floridian American than anything."

And if they can be African American or Latin American or what ever can I be German-Welsh-Scottish-Irish-Native-American? Though I actually prefer the term Mutt.

2001-11-27 07:03:27 PM
Hmmm...that sounded awful, didn't it? Like I had no contact with anyone outside of my own ethnicity throughout my pampered white childhood. Well, I did. I had black friends through school and college, and dated a black guy once. But back then I wasn't concerned at all with being 'PC'; the term hadn't even been coined yet. It wasn't until I entered the 'adult' world that I became paranoid about mistakenly offending people...but I've come to the conclusion that people who want to find insult always will, in spite of how careful you are, but that many others are more willing to overlook social gaffes when intent is genuine.

2001-11-27 07:03:46 PM
Holy scheiss, Shanrick. She's got some serious metal in there... Oh wait, what was this thread about? Politics? Feh.

2001-11-27 07:10:33 PM
The African-American term is divisive and was only ment to seperate some americans from others to further an agenda. Just don't use it. If I was running for office there I would promote my stand on the issues. I couldn't care less who voted for me. Why cater to any race just to get their vote?

2001-11-27 07:17:02 PM
that'll all change under my new republican regime, don't you worry. it'll be like the republican party of old. er wait, no it'll be a republican party for a new age. just you wait.

2001-11-27 07:22:34 PM
ha! Or, you could go the Archie Bunker road and say "coloreds". Speaking of Archie Bunker, they say other racial insults on that show all the time and it never got censored... but they never use the "n" word. Strange.

2001-11-27 07:29:10 PM
White Americans don't call themselves European Americans do they? Why does Policital Correctness only pertain to certain people?

No, they call themselves Caucasians.

2001-11-27 07:35:13 PM
I have read Jet magazine and they use the term Black (with capital letters).

S.T.Pickrell

2001-11-27 07:36:19 PM
Sigh. Granted, reading the article might help, but why do they care if they have a "correct" number of blacks (word used intentionally and I don't care)??

2001-11-27 07:36:21 PM
However, when Blacks vote 95% Democratic, they shouldn't really complain when the Democratic Party doesn't really take them seriously.

It's similar to the relationship between evangelical Christians and the GOP.

S.T.Pickrell

2001-11-27 07:46:54 PM
if we can't call african-american people blacks, than the terrorists have already won....

2001-11-27 07:48:25 PM
Black is Beautiful.
Now Shutup Already.

2001-11-27 07:53:08 PM
There is no difference between any of us on this earth. We are all the same. Skin color, race, nationhood, identity: all equally illusory.

2001-11-27 07:59:55 PM
I'm from SC, and this sounds about right to me. As the arguement goes, Every black person I know calls themself black, not african american. I had a friend dub me an "honorary black man", so there for, I say black is the right word.

Also, did you know that per capita, SC has the most foreign investment in all of the US.

2001-11-27 08:00:12 PM
No, they call themselves Caucasians.

No white liberals call themselfs caucasians.

2001-11-27 08:08:20 PM
Pickrell --
Huh? Last I knew the GOP still spends a lot of energy sucking the dicks of the evangelical Xtians. As far as I can see the hard core Xtians are firmly in control of the GOP. I always figured their relationship with the GOP ought to be like you describe. If it were I might vote GOP. As the situation stands, though, no can do. No Farking way.

2001-11-27 08:46:05 PM
We are borg.....

2001-11-27 08:53:57 PM
Yarr- MediaMadeMeKill beat me to it.

2001-11-27 08:57:57 PM
I am farking sick of the notion of there's different kinds of Americans and they all have different needs and wants and political leanings. Most blacks (theres nothing wrong with that term) vote Democratic because their entire family tree did and they think they are supposed to. Same for most whites (theres nothing wrong with that term) voting Republican. How about people weighing the facts and deciding for themselves, without persuasion from friends/family/news networks?

2001-11-27 09:03:18 PM
Bulworth said it best....

Angry black woman: Are you sayin' the Democratic Party don't care about the African-American community?

Senator Jay Billington Bulworth: Isn't that OBVIOUS? You got half your kids are out of work and the other half are in jail. Do you see ANY Democrat doing anything about it? Certainly not me! So what're you gonna do, vote Republican? Come on! Come on, you're not gonna vote Republican! Let's call a spade a spade! [Loud, angry booing] I mean -- come on! You can have a Billion Man March! If you don't put down that malt liquor and chicken wings, and get behind someone other than a running back who stabs his wife, you're NEVER gonna get rid of somebody like me!

2001-11-27 09:07:11 PM
No white liberals call themselfs caucasians.

Is that bad or something? Using a term which describes the anatomy of a person - rather than just skin color

2001-11-27 09:08:27 PM
Sorry, that wasn't meant as flamebait particularly.... I just think its ironic that republicans free'd the slaves (Lincoln) and democrats keep them enslaved (welfare).

oops... that wasn't meant as flamebait either...

no matter, I'll go back to lurking =P

2001-11-27 09:10:29 PM
Using White and Black to describe people has become extremly common, and thus it shouldn't be a big deal when media sources begin to address a mass of people by the most common terms - but it should also be know that there is a far more meaning word than those two.

2001-11-27 09:11:45 PM
Keeping them enslaved via welfare... no, that wasn't meant to be flame bait....

2001-11-27 09:12:15 PM
I can see this is going to be a stereotype war, *sigh* again, on Fark.

2001-11-27 09:30:39 PM
affinity,
i love your bio!
don't fark with SC, indeed!

2001-11-27 09:33:42 PM
This will give you the background if you can read it without gagging or yawning.

Remember, before The War of Northern Agression, South Carolina was a proud Democrat state... They referred to Lincoln & Co as "Black Republicans," honest!

2001-11-27 09:38:39 PM
Rekinom - Curious, did you know Lincoln was considered... *gasp* liberal?

look in your history, the platforms change view all the time.

The country is a melting pot, not a salad bowl. If you were born and have lived your life in the US you are an American. Arguing about the 'proper' term is irrelevent and supposedly doesn't matter. You don't have to worry about ethnic equality if you can realize we're all Americans/(insert country here). Base your estimation of a person on their conduct and behavior and you don't have to worry about stereotypes.

2001-11-27 09:47:48 PM
I am a white liberal, and I call myself white. But then again, I really shouldn't respond to anything MediaMadeMeKill says, as it is doubtless inflammatory.

2001-11-27 09:47:53 PM
fifthcolumn,

Actually, where I live, a good 70% or more of the black people that I come in contact with are obviously highly educated and very well off. The other 30% are still consistently pleasant people to be around, regardless of social status.

However, if you travel 20 miles west, you come across the city of Elmira which contains numerous public housing projects and two prisons. I'll not describe the types of folks you usually run into there.

You may draw your own conclusions. However, race and color is obviously not the factor. What is?

2001-11-27 09:50:29 PM
...not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character...

2001-11-27 09:55:34 PM
Akachibi: don't you mean The War To Preserve Slavery?

One of the things I've noticed is that the demographic that seems to use the term "African-American" the most is the upper-middle class white liberal. ALL the blacks I know call themselves blacks.

2001-11-27 10:04:30 PM
Lzombie,

Unfortunately liberal has come to mean democrat and conservative has come to mean republican.

But really.... look up the terms republic and democracy....

From my understanding....

IF we were a democracy, the majority of voting citizens (white male land owners at the time) could have said slavery was correct and then keep it in place.

As a republic, the highest elected official (Lincoln) could decide slavery was wrong and then abolish it without the direct consent of the public.

Keep in mind that I am not a historian... but thank god that Lincoln was a liberal and that we have a democratic republic.

http://www.lovecalculator.com/love.php?name1=African+American&name2=Black

the political implications are boundless...

Rek - try social and economical status, that generally sets the standard for crime. I will not lie by saying there are no "blacks" in ghettos, but there are "whites".. anyhow, it has to be better than NC.. I hate Jesse Helms..

but in general, if the economic and social status change, so does the crime rate, look in the suburbs vs. city, etc..

2001-11-27 10:11:02 PM
true, I am not gonna say we are not a republic of democratic states, but keep an eye on what the party platforms mean.

Hence sitting on the right (Republican) and left (Democrat)

I agree, this is more of a fight between conservative and liberal.. but as a majority, most Republicans are conservative and most Democrats are liberal.

but, this divison has always existed... and always will.

I am a liberal, but I see the need for the conservative.. and that without moderation, this country would fly apart at the seams.. (so to speak)

You want South Carolina Republicans?

Blaaargh!

2001-11-27 10:15:07 PM
How about we go back to the 'big 3'?
White = caucasian
Asian = mongoloid
Black = negroid
Everything else is mix of the 3. So much easier. It worked for a couple hundred years. It worked only 60 years ago. At least that is how people are descibed in my ancient encyclopaedias. I hate change. Guess that's why I'm a conservative.

By the way, ever talked to a rural south Carolinian? You do not want these people to vote anyway. I am not talking about race. Stupid cuts both ways equally there. Helping demonrats is just a side effect of poor education.
