In my day, if we wanted to play ball, we had to use peach pits or twined up newspaper. For bats, we used the old rake handle, except for the one time Timmy Sullivan stole the fake leg from his Pappy (he lost his leg at Anzio). And we didnt have a ballfield. We played on Sheffield Avenue, where Miller's garage marked the homerun and phone poles were foul. We'd play for hours, then go steal buttermilk from Stag's grocery, because most of our alcoholic fathers drank it before a binge.

In retrospect, it was pretty terrible. Kids have it good nowadays.

In my time you were lucky if you didn't have to be the ball.

Didn't realize some community colleges have sports teams. That's kind of cool.

In my day, we had to shovel snow for 10 miles, uphill all the way, just to get to the ballpark to shovel the snow.

They are college students, not kids. One does not normally associate deep snow with baseball season. Subby is a complete f*cking idiot.

When baseball players are hurting themselves throwing away gum or tossing shaving cream pies, let's cut these kids a little slack - snow shoveling might make them go full Rich Harden.

I'm sure Subby shoveled snow off grass a whole lot as a child.

Presumably by analogy if the news came and covered you mowing your lawn, that would mean you are spoiled.

As kids, we had to do this pretty much every time we wanted to play hockey.  We had to haul all our equipment across the road and into the woods, then shovel off the pond until we had a rink, and it used to snow a lot.  As goalie, I had to strap on a snow suit padded with duct taped phone books and old bath towels that I made, then we played until it was too dark to see, or until someone took a puck to the face and quit.  Good times.

Came in to post this, just because the internet news will report on anything and everything instantly doesnt mean that these things are becoming more prevalent.

We used to play on an elementary schools baseball field all the time in high school. It would take us a couple days to get the field in anywhere near playing condition. Funny to think a group of teenagers was willing to bust their Ass like that to be able to play. I'm assuming kids these days would say fark it" and go home to play "The Show" on playstation instead.

We had to get up the night before and make our own snow.
