Yeah, I think its safe to say that we've moved toward embracing Pope "Lighten Up, Francis" and Pope Breakin' 2: "Electric Bergoglio."

Had a lung removed as a child?  That's pretty odd in itself.  That's usually associated with an older person either in the coal mining industry, asbestos or heavy smoker.  Must have been one doozy of an infection if it prompted them to remove a lung from a child.

Yes, Pope face, I'm sure God cares more about stopping consensual loving relationships then He does about institutionalized child rape.

He also used to tango a lot?  How do you tango with one lung?  You'd think intense physical activity would be pretty low on the list of things you can do.  But what do I know?

Well, that's miracle #1 then, right? So he only needs one more to become a saint. Or do they have to be posthumous miracles? My wife is vaguely Catholic but I admit I know little to nothing about it.

10. He called Argentina's legalization of gay marriage in 2010 a "destructive attack on God's plan."

11. He argued that gay adoption would "discriminate against children."

Hateful old sh*tbag.

Those are perks of the job. Unless he orders all the walls to be trimmed in gold, I'm not gonna fault him for moving into the Catholic's version of the White House.

But I doubt that much will change with this pope and every other pope before him.

Demanded that an art exhibit that "depicted images of Catholic saints, Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary in a blender, an electric toaster and a frying pan, among other unconventional settings" be shut down, calling it "blasphemous."

So it's blasphemous when someone makes an art exhibit about it, but every time you see Jesus in a tortilla it's a miracle?

He's a very humble man, from what I've been hearing.

Like, from every single news outlet throughout most of the afternoon and evening yesterday, every two minutes or so, over and over and over and over and over. . . .

There were also a lot of priests and Catholic Church scholars on TV remarking on how humble he is.

Chris Matthews said on his show last night that he has high hopes for this pope, because the guy's really humble.

Apparently, the new pope is a very humble man.

It's the first time a new pope has taken a name that hasn't already been used by a former pope since Pope Lando in 913.

Only a few popes took regnal names before the 11th century, and Lando wasn't one of them. Nor was anyone else without a roman numeral or now known as "the first." Lando was simply his own name.

So Francis is the first pope ever to take a name that wasn't used before (or second, if you count John Paul I). He is the first since Lando not to have a roman numeral (John Paul I did call himself John Paul the First).

He's also the first pope from outside of Europe since the 8th century.

6. He's the son of Italian immigrants.

This is why he was elected. An Italian who is also Argentine. Argentina is the most European of the SA countries. Italians are the largest ethnic group, especially in Buenos Aires. In addition, SA is about the only continent in which the RCC is not in decline. If the Church really wanted to nod to SA, it would have elected a Mestizo pope, since Mestizos make up the majority or Latin Americans.

interesting facts about pope lando:
-he was only pope for 6 months before dying
-lando was his real name and he apparently decided it was too badass to change upon ascension to the papacy
- he was one of the popes to rule during the period of the papacy known as the "pornocracy"

I am going to admit my ignorance about the Catholic church but wouldn't that mean that this is a positive thing? Nothing changes overnight but could that mean that this pope could start things moving in a positive, more modern direction?

Although interestingly the other lung was removed when he was a kid, and it makes me wonder if his body was able to increase the efficiency and/or size of the existing lung as he grew into an adult.  I think if he had his lung removed a couple of years ago, he'd probably already be dead.
