Way to throw your money away, lady.  Things like this will backfire at at the divorce hearings.

2013-03-13 11:55:47 PM
Had a co-worker whose husband insisted on keeping everything in his name, including who was financially responsible for the credit cards. When she left him, she maxed them out with new furniture for her new apartment and somehow she ended up getting to keep it. At least that's what she was telling us. Doesn't quite seem right to me, but she did end up in a really nicely furnished apartment.

good for her.
i remember seeing an add for a Ferrari, $50.
thought it was a typo and found out later that the woman's husband took off to hawaii with his secretary (as the story goes), and called his wife and asked her to sell his sports car and send him the money.
so she sold it for 50 bucks and sent him the money.

Absolutely true. I told her I'd bought them and that she could pick 'em up at my house, but she'd stopped playing years ago and said she didn't care and that I should keep them. The family heirlooms of hers that I'd picked up, she came and collected, as I'd been keeping them expressly for her, which is partly why her grandmother's pearls and her mom's wedding dress weren't gone forever.

It was one of those horrible caught-between-two-friends scenarios, where the best one can do is save the one's stuff from the other and try to stay friends with both amid the furor. The Magic cards were just something she no longer cared about and let me have, and it was two years of happy playing before I sold them off. (SO many plague rats she had! It was like NIMH up in every black deck.)

In California (a community property state) everything acquired during marriage belongs to both parties. That means it can legally be sold by either person without the other's consent as long as the money goes back to the community (I guess--I'm not versed on the finer details of divorce). So what's likely to happen if this is like CA would be that she can do whatever she wants with anything that was bought with "their" money--so long as they split the proceeds 50/50 in the divorce settlement--but if any of it was bought with his separate property, and he can prove it, she's going to be in trouble. Any divorce lawyer probably knows more for sure.

If you really hate your partner that much, though, it's probably cheaper and easier to just leave.

SpiderQueenDemon: flamingboard: You bought and sold stolen property.

My BF's Dad just tossed most of his ex wife's stuff.. And some of my SO + sibling's stuff in the process.

The court was assess depreciated value, not replacement.  The latter would put the injured party in a better position than he was in before he was wronged.

when my wife left me she took her stuff. she also took my X box and 42 LCD (keep in mind this was about 3 years ago when 42' LCD were still pretty nice). her computer was in the shop. it was an expensive gaming rig that was just built. i made sure to pick it up when it was ready.

I call her up about my tv and xbox and she informs me about about commutative property and that she was keeping it.... bla bla bla. a week later she calls me and asks if her computer was ready. i informed her that not only was it ready but it was performing very well. when she asked for me to bring it to her i informed her of the commutative property and that she got hers, i got mine. needless to say, separation is usually not pleasant and maybe some people could benefit from a little honesty.

BarkingUnicorn: You bought a car with the proceeds from a well-worn deck? Hot Wheels?

'92 Toyota that needed some body work, which is more Matchbox than Hot Wheels. And I only played with the black and white decks, out of about five full liquor-store boxes of cards.

When it's a choice between 'little brother is driving and may total Mom and Dad's car' or 'improvise,' a girl can get by, especially if one can do one's own repairs. I didn't want the kid to wreck their car, so I sold off the parts of a card collection I didn't use for a POS, fixed it up myself, gave it to him and was my parents' favorite kid for a few weeks. When little sister got her permit, I sold my original Atari and games, all the pre-3.5 D&D books I had and one of my guitars to get her a vehicle of her own so she wouldn't wreck my folks' car and leave them without a way to get to work...but little sister is effing rad, so we did the body work and brake lines together and her car is pretty darn awesome for a $600 beater. She does her own electrical work and I couldn't be prouder.

Are you not familiar with the lifestyle of the working poor, or do you just not have younger siblings? I'd sell Gary Gygax' autograph if it meant little sis could afford her textbooks...oh, wait. I did that in 2008. There is no geek icon I love as much as my sister and brother, in about that order, and considering they pooled their money to send husband and I to a comic convention this year, I think the feeling is mutual.

/family. it owns.

That's also a deleted scene in High Fidelity.  The woman who plays Mrs. Griswold in the Vacation films is trying to sell John Cusack's character a ridiculously valuable record collection for next to nothing. Including stuff hidden in the kids rooms and playroom. No they weren't the kids stuff they were 9,8,5,1and an infant. I thought about dropping it off to his mom and explaining where I was lucky enough to find them. Instead I had a bonfire night in my yard with my closest friends the night the papers were signed. Community property is one thing; selling off pre-marital assets or things at a deliberately low price out of spite may piss off the judge.  If you're deliberately wasting/destroying assets a judge may hold it against you.

WhoopAssWayne: Had a co-worker whose husband insisted on keeping everything in his name, including who was financially responsible for the credit cards. When she left him, she maxed them out with new furniture for her new apartment and somehow she ended up getting to keep it. At least that's what she was telling us. Doesn't quite seem right to me, but she did end up in a really nicely furnished apartment.

Sounds like BS. Judges tend to frown on this sort of thing. it doesn't matter if the credit cards were in his name; debt encured while married belongs to both people.

More likely she got the furniture but paid for it by not getting any of the retirement funds.
