If you have a good domain name, you can get 4-5 figures for selling it.  For something as specific as this (and given that it's the Catholic Church, the single richest organization in the modern world*), he might have just gotten a million-dollar payday.

Which is funny because if the Vatican wants it, they'll get it and he'll get fark all. ICANN will hand it over to them and that's that.

Keep in mind that the corollary these days to "If you have a good domain name, you can get 4-5 figures for selling it" is: "If you don't have a good domain name, you need 4-5 figures just to buy it with no guarantee of ever recouping your initial costs."

Most of the "That is a bunch of money." web sales are some guy who registered pizza.com back in 1998, and then sold it to some major corporation in 2010.

/And these days, between the IRS and the state, even cap gains is sitting at 25% taxes, so you're breaking even on a 33% return.

The Vatican is its own country, though. They have their own top level domain, so I imagine Francis.va is safe. Looking at vatican.va, they could stand to do some work on their site, but it looks like they now have a Papal app, which is some progress. Insofar as Jesuits enjoy discourse I think the new pope may be keen on expanding engagement online. Although I doubt he'll turn up for an AMA on Reddit any time soon.

TheManofPA: But what is the Pope's new twitter handle

Same one as the old pope, @pontifex. It's controlled by the office, not by the individual guy. It was actually kind of funny- they apparently turned it inactive when Benedict officially left office and reactivated it when they got white smoke. To think that there's a guy at the Vatican responsible for reactivating the papal twitter handle immediately after the conclave chooses someone is kind of funny. Soon it'll be just as traditional an element of the ceremony as the tolling of the bells.

No way. Maybe if it was popefrancis.va, but ICANN doesn't generally take names away from anybody, that's generally left to the courts. In this case, this guy had the name long before the pope did, so he should be safe. In the end, I suspect a 6+-figure payout is in this guy's future.

Yar. I have bought about 30 domains over the years, about 3 of which I actually use, and one of which I sold to some woman for $400 when she needed it in a hurry for some reason. Interesting, it has said "under construction" continuously since her purchase, nine years ago.

Who gives a crap about .com? Wouldn't you want PopeFrancis.va? Or these days I suppose it would be "Francis.pope", farking ICANN wouldn't know a sensible domain hierarchy if it bit them on the ass...

So, my strategy is when I become a cardinal, I will decide what my pope name will be and register it just in case I become pope. I'll probably need to pick a couple alternates in case I don't get elected at the first opportunity. I'll probably need to learn to navigate church politics too. I should also think about seminary (tee hee) school and getting ordained. I should probably become a catholic too. I should probably start about twenty years ago.

I don't know why people bother with this really. No one is going around blindly punching URLs in an hoping to stumble across the right website. This isn't 1998. People just Google shiat nowadays. No one but like old ladies are going, "I want to know about XY&Z. Let's type in http://www.xyandz.com." Christ. Most people when they want to log-in to Facebook just Google "Facebook login." I'm not shiatting up here. Domain parking is pointless these days. Search results are infinitely more important than URLs these days.

Captiosam Pullus is Latin ffor Tricky Chicken.

Gallus Astutus is 'Wise man from France' or 'French seer'

That was true in the late 90s, but now, not so much. Rather, if you can't show any legitimate interest in your domain (other than the potential for huge cybersquatting income), if it's likely to mislead vistors, and if you show bad faith in acquiring it (like you don't make a home page for three farking years), you can actually  lose the domain under a UDRP seizure administered by a WIPO administrative judge.
So, this "lawyer" may not be all that up on the law, frankly.
