js34603: Fade2black: libranoelrose: Are they waiting on a funnier headline, or what? This is huge.

They were waiting for a more accurate headline, namely Seattle/Denver.

Yes yes let that hubris flow through you Seattle fans. Do you guys even watch the NFL? I have to assume not since you seem to be oblivious to how Super Bowl "favorites" have been doing for the last oh 15 years or so.

But hey keep clamoring for favorite status. Dream Team II in my opinion, I think Vince Young might even be available to back up Wilson for his inevitable knee injury this year.

I eat, breathe, live, and poo NFL.  It drives my wife nuts.  I have the NFL ticket.  I spend thousands on tickets...I spend 2k+ on fantasy and sports gambling.  I live the NFL.

All I will say is this:  We in Seattle, we don't get much to be excited about.  We don't make high free agency acquisitions.  Prince Fielder snubs us because of our park.  Josh Hamilton wanted 30 million more to come here.  Deion Branch washes out because he's 4' 9.  The 1 year our Sonics were greatness, we ran into the Michael Jordan buzzsaw.

It isn't hubris.  It isn't being a snob.  It's genuine excitement that for once in the past 20 year, we have a sports team in this town we can cheer and feel good about, with expectations that are through the roof.  That about sums it up.

spiderpaz: The surest way to attract a bunch of Seahawk fans is to write a post or an article that mentions the Niners.  But not the other way around.  I wonder why it could be that the hawk fans have a stick up their ass so bad about the Niners, but the Niners fans couldn't care less about the hawks.  Go to any article on ESPN or wherever on the web about the Niners and you'll see it's true.  It's almost as bad as Bruins that go into rabid retard mode, spamming the comments section of any USC Football article.

Because ... 42-13.

Okay, I'm totally late to this party, but hot diggity-damn! I'm not sure what I'm more happy about: that the Broncos got Welker, or that the Patriots DON'T have Welker.

Manning could easily hit 5,000 yards and 45 TDs this season.

/go Broncos

UNC_Samurai: I was a Broncos fan before the Panthers existed. I thought that I would never see anything quite so painful as the second quarter of XXII; The Broncos were up 10-0, and I was convinced Ricky Nattiel was going to be the MVP of that game. And then Doug Williams and Timmy Smith broke my spirit. I thought, it can't get any worse than that.

Wrong. Two years later the Broncos were only down 4 midway through the first quarter, and we forced San Fran to punt. Then Bobby Humphrey fumbled and a few plays later Montana tacks on another 6. And it was never competitive from that fumble forward. It was like watching a high school team try and play against the pros.

Several days later, I saw the local Raleigh affiliate run a shot of a highway sign that read "Speed Limit 55", underneath which was spray-painted "Broncos 10".

Yeah, those two were the worst (also because my brother is a Redskins fan), but Super Bowl XII was another bad memory. Craig Morton was either paid off, or forgot that he was no longer a Cowboy. Hell, it was only last year that DiAtribe convinced me to let go my hatred of all things to do with silver, blue, or stars.

People hate on the Broncos, because they're a successful team, but they forget that they've paid their dues. Their first 12 seasons, they never had a winning season. They were 39-97-4 for the '60s. These were the years I became a Bronco fan.

They were also the years I learned true hatred of the Raiders and Chiefs. If it wasn't a Raider DB trying to drown a Bronco wide receiver in a mud puddle, it was KC being up by 50 and trying an onside kick.

I've mellowed in my old age; back then, if the Raider team plane mid-air collided with the Chiefs team plane, I'd have cheered. Now, I'd just hope that they were only injured severely.

drewsclues: VvonderJesus: Brady is getting Danny Amendola, who is almost exactly like Wes Welker.

/at least in Madden

That's the strangest part of this. They paid Danny Amendola more (5 years / 31 million) than what Denver is paying Welker. Someone wanted Welker gone.

Welker's guaranteed money is $12 million, Amendola's is $10 million.  Guaranteed money is the only thing that matters in the NFL. And if Amendola works out they control him for 5 years.

The most interesting statistic on Amendola vs Welker is on espnboston.

Since 2010, Welker has caught passes at a rate of 12.5 receptions for every drop (326 catches, 26 drops).

Amendola's success rate is considerably higher at 21.9 receptions per drop.

Welker's 11 drops last season were second-most in the NFL. Amendola's drop rate (2.1 percent of targets dropped) ratedsecond-lowest in the NFL.

Not saying that will work out for the Pats--as has been pointed out, Amendola's been injured a lot. But I think that was a big part of the rationale.

He had no business even being that close to making the catch. If it had been anyone else throwing it he wouldn't of caught half as much shiat as he did.

VTGremlin: I'm not sure what scheme a defensive coordinator is going to dream up to attempt to cover the new Broncos receiving corps. Most teams did a crap job at it last year, so adding Welker is going to crush the life out of any and all of the 3rd cover men stuck playing against the Broncos. Manning was 400/583 for 4,659 last season. He should hit 5,000 yards this season with ease.

Meh...let 'em score. Their defense sucks.

GAT_00: libranoelrose: GAT_00: It's almost half of what he would have made franchised.

I heard it was going to be 8.5 million, but I'm probably mistaken.

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1^C7300/article/franchise-tag -n umbers-tentatively-set-2013-cap-near-121m

WR at $10.357M.  Old, but approximate.

Welker was due for a 20% bump from last year's 9.5 million, because he had been franchised last year, so it would have been 11.4 million.

Pats went with Amendola for actually slightly less in guaranteed money, 5 years of control if he works out.

Broncos got a good deal, but I think the Patriots made the right decision in moving on. Welker had been taking an incredible beating in the slot, particularly in the last few years, sooner or later that catches up with you. It might be why he started dropping more passes the last few years--slot receivers usually get tackled by much bigger guys than wideouts.

He's an incredible player, and I hope he makes it into the HOF some day, but Pats need to spend more money on their horrible pass defense. Even with signing Amendola, between Welker's 9.5 million and soon to be released Brandon Lloyd, they'll get close to $10 million more on the cap. And they can always use Hernandez more in the slot

And for next to nothing.  They couldn't pay Welker $6M?

That's less than he would have made had he been franchised. He must really think that Manning is the key to the SB.

It's almost half of what he would have made franchised.  I don't get how the Pats couldn't pay him $6M, and I don't get how the Broncos got him for $6M.  He must have only gone to them because he wants to win and he knew Peyton was his best bet.  And probably get back at the Pats for abandoning him.
