syrynxx: vernonFL: NeoCortex42: Wasn't Peter Jewish?

Wasn't Jesus Jewish?

But, yeah, Peter was the first Jewish Pope.

The word "Pope" or any form of it appears in the Bible as often as the words "Quantum entanglement".  It is a political office, end of story.

Nothing about the office, but I'm pretty sure the word "papa" shows up once or twice.

It is a tough job.  They should have hired a younger guy than they likely did.  Someone in their late 40's would be able to handle it better.  They need someone who is very thick skinned and can handle all the extreme criticism that naturally will flow in his direction.  I would prefer someone who would allow women Bishops and Cardinals.  Women would have a better chance at fixing the messes they have gotten into.

yes, this is the most important question.

I'm not sure what particular method the Vatican uses, but water vapor in the smoke will do it.

This stuff.

Thanks!

I'd be happy if he'd come out and introduce everyone to his spouse, gender doesn't matter but age does. If the Pope announced that he was secretly married and now going open about it, THAT would be news worth reporting.

Edwardo17: durbnpoisn: Good.  Can we just get over this already?

Speaking as a non-Catholic, I find it completely absurd that the news media is portraying this as some sort of gigantic event for all of humanity.  My coffee will still taste the same tomorrow...  In other words, it means less than nothing to me.

Also speaking as a non-Catholic; the fact that you happen to think that it's not a big event says nothing about whether or not is actually is a major event. The Catholic Church is one of the largest, oldest, and most influential organizations in the history of civilization. Period. There are over 1.2 billion Catholics, and over 400,000 priests in the Church - not including the monastic orders, lay orders, and other affiliated organizations. The Pope has a remarkable amount of influence in the doctrinal decisions of the church, and church policy influences state policy in dozens of nations all over the world. The political and theological positions of the next pope will help to shape the church's stance on contraception, abortion, the status of women, and a host of other social and theological issues for the next several decades at least.

You can think it's absurd; you're free to feel that it means nothing to you. But let's be honest; the election of a new pope isa big deal.

I understand you're (and every one else's) point on this.  But let's also be honest about this...   There are almost 4.5 billion people that couldn't care less about the Pope or what what he has to say.  Thusly why I think it's so absurd that people think the world is going to change.

So, in response to the other person condemiing my coffee analogy...  If best Korea attacked any country in the world, THAT would be a world changing event.  Because the response could almost certainly start a very large war.

Speaking as a Catholic... I completely agree. I don't get why everyone else cares that we elect a new church leader.

I'm Jewish, and while I'd like the focus to be somewhere below "top headline on the roundup EVERY TIME", something that impacts 1.2 billion people is a matter of international import/intrigue.

didn't Rush Limbaugh say that?

My grandmother suggested that domestic violence was a direct result of feminism. Like, it didn't even exist until the 60's. What was it she said... Oh: "It's like the emasculation of men through women's rights have made the men more violent in order to prove themselves."
