Brushing aside millennia, thousands and thousands of years of wisdom, tradition, culture...

F*ck your culture and tradition.  I am not beholden to it.  It means nothing to me.  And I'll fight at every turn to keep you from pushing it on those who don't follow it.

But if you do have sex, you'd better get pregnant, and you'd better carry that shame-baby the whole term and then you'd better raise it all by yourself, you dirty whore.  And don't you dare go on food stamps or welfare.  You should have thought of that before you had sex.

Well, that's what he means by "single people."

You need to have at least  two people, otherwise it just doesn't work.

This is actually consistent with all their other positions that I've seen.  They want to outlaw abortion, they want to eliminate modern sex ed, they want to keep gay marriage illegal, and they want what seem to be a lot of theocratic policies put into law.

If no one had sex before marriage, no one would "need" birth control, abortion, paternity tests, Planned Parenthood, or sexy ads on TV.  That is, in their view.  Trying to ban all the things that fornicating people want/need/use only makes sense if you also want to ban fornication, otherwise:

Chariset: But if you do have sex, you'd better get pregnant, and you'd better carry that shame-baby the whole term and then you'd better raise it all by yourself, you dirty whore. And don't you dare go on food stamps or welfare. You should have thought of that before you had sex.

They'd end up feeling a little judgy, and have to worry about the needs of sinners.

chatikh: Also from the same page:

http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/frcs-peter-sprigg-suggests-kid na pping-laws-shouldnt-protect-gay-parents

Also consistent with their other beliefs.  Most kidnappings are by non-custodial parent... since the FRC campaigns against gay marriage and gay partners adopting the biological kids of their partners, then it is consistent that they'd want biological parents to be able to take their kids away from fake-ass, adoptive gay parents.

Again, this is not a statement of support for the FRC, just pointing out that there is a method to their madness.

From another article on this site:

"Pollsshow overwhelming public support for protecting gay and transgender people from discrimination on the job. But that doesn't matter to FRC, which has a lot invested in convincing its supporters that LGBT equality is incompatible with religious freedom.

Several years ago, FRC warned that a federal hate crimes law would be used to silence preachers.  Other religious right leaders saidChristians would be tossed into jail for preaching against homosexuality. That legislation was signed into law in 2009; as Perkins himself makes clear, the freedom to trash-talk LGBT people has survived."

That's totally a good point. As long as FRC is spewing trash, obviously the right to trash gays has stayed. FRC is in Washington, D.C. which has full gay rights as far as I know, including non-discrimination. So if they can still do that, then everything they say are lies. Which I already knew, that point just never occurred to me.

Really? In a thread about sex?

No one is walking into your home and rifling through your gun cabinet. But if something happens I could have a large foreign object inserted into my hoo-haw that I don't want in there.

It is ultimately about control.  Society doesn't change if you have constant mindset in leadership.  If women are always "chained" to wifely duties, that caps one powerful source of change.  Ultimately it is their way of avoiding obsolescence, because every time society changes drastically (women's suffrage, the end of slavery, gay rights, etc...) and the world doesn't end, then those that have been using the bible to justify injustice lose chunks of their foundation.

You can't keep fooling people forever when your message is publicly proven false.

spongeboob: When you learn history from the Bible you are not really learning history.

Except it's not even what's actually in the Bible. Here's some of what marriage tradition looked like in the Bible:

Adam and Eve: Never married.
Abraham: Married w/concubines, also pimped out his wife (repeatedly) by telling everyone she's his sister so they wouldn't kill him.
Jacob: Two wives, two concubines

and those are the big names, then you get fun examples like:

Onan: sleeping with his brother's widow, from which we got contraception is bad (which is the wrong lesson to take)

Tamar: sleeps with her father-in-law (who mistook her for a prostitute) to get pregnant after her husband dies.

Solomon: 700 wives, 300 concubines

So, yeah, lots of good wisdom and tradition there.

Actually, abortion... because if I can't get birth control because some guy like in TFA had his way and I got pregnant, then yes, I'd have to have an abortion. I can't financially afford to be pregnant. If I had to have an abortion I'd have to have a vaginal wand inserted in order to get the State mandated ultrasound.

So yes, it does follow with the article and TFT, thank you very much.

I'm on my work computer, but I'll take a guess: Because it's every Christian's duty to place themselves on the cross (may need help with the last nail, though), that they may feel the savior's suffering for all of mankind for themselves?

I really don't care WHY it is they believe they're persecuted, but can we get them to realize THAT it is, and in so doing, get them to confine their outbursts of preacherality to preacher-friendly places (like Congress or Church)?

Real close, yeah. It's an interesting topic because they address how histories have been altered to serve the narrative of Christian suffering. It also demonstrates the difficulty of doing what you're hoping for, in that the ingrained nature of a belief in persecution literally makes them believe any reduction in prestige or control is a form of persecution. It was interesting to me because I learned that when they cry persecution because they can't pray in school they honestly believe it.

I'm not saying I believe they're being persecuted. Merely that it alters my perception of how to deal with them when I realized they were being honest about their feelings, no matter how misguided those feelings are.

Duke Phillips' Singing Bears: Dr Dreidel: Duke Phillips' Singing Bears: KERA (the Dallas NPR affiliate) has a daily show called Think. Yesterday, they did a show about how the myth of christian persecution came to be. It was really interesting. Here's a link, if you have time:

http://podcastdownload.npr.org/anon.npr-podcasts/podcast/77/510036/1 74 131078/KERA_174131078.mp3?_kip_ipx=270823787-1363201507

// no
// you want persecution, there are some European and Japanese-American (or simply Americans whose eyelids were just too close together) 80somethings with a little light to shed on the topic

My dad told me not too long ago that he feels persecuted as a Christian after I sent him a link to a story about.....something.....i think it was about gay marriage and/or gay-bullying.  I sent it to him b/c he's anti-gay and I thought the story captured more of the human aspect of it and how it must feel to live feeling second class and/or persecuted (not sure if i used that word).  That's when he told me how HE felt about HIS situation.  I facepalmed right out of my chair.

I left Lot off the list because both the rape-y townsfolk and the incest are seen as bad things in the Bible, so we do agree on those values. Tricking your father-in-law into thinking you're a prostitute so that you can get impregnated by him is totally a-ok, though.

The rape-y townsfolk may be seen as bad, but if Lot is the sole righteous man in Sodom doesn't that make his actions righteous, so the offering your daughters to be raped seems to not be wrong.

A similar thing happened with my mother regarding organized prayer in schools, and how Christians were being persecuted because it wasn't allowed anymore.I finally asked her "Did your teachers lead you in prayer?".That stopped her for a moment, and she said, "You know what? They didn't.I wonder why I thought that prayer was being banned?".

Never mind the fact that there will always be prayer in school of the "Please God let me pass this test kind", and "Please God I hope she deleted those pictures from last weekend" kind. What's not allowed is teacher or administration sanctioned prayer that is a part of the school schedule (officially or otherwise).

I've had an acquaintance claim persecution because one of her family members asked her to tone down her "Praise Jesus" attitude at a non-Christian, Native American funeral.

It seems anything that damages that fragile superiority complex causes cries of persecution.

Well, societies have always forbidden that, there were laws against it.

Technically true, but also somewhat misleading, as while there have in fact always been societies forbidding it, none of the western cultures from the 1600s and 1700s from which the US inherits the majority of its customs are among them, and while there are laws against it they only exist in places no right-minded westerner would ever want to live, like Saudi Arabia.

In fact, most of the examples forming the basis of this statement are fundamentalist Islamic theocracies, which is kind of a weird thing for a Christian lobby group to reference.

Fart_Machine: Why does anyone take these clowns seriously?

No one really does, but they're loud and annoying enough that politicians will occasionally give in on things they don't consider important just to shut them up for a bit.  They're definitely not one of the lobby groups that gets to write policy these days.

Gotta disagree with that. I don't find it strange at all. The ultra paranoid, fundamentalist right wing brigade takes its lessons from America's enemies, like Sauruman peering at the Dark Lord through the Palantir.

First they absorbed the nationalist propaganda machine from the germans.

Then they learned how to use cultural paranoia and military brinksmanship as a way of life from the USSR

And finally, they most recently love and admire Jihadi types, who so stalwartly refuse to bend. They saw young muslims blowing themselves up for Allah, and decided that it was good and admirable to become more like them.

At this point, they are just a caricature of all of America's greatest enemies, rolled up into one.

But he is being completely oblivious to the fact that in these societies, people have always done whatever the fark they want, especially when it comes to sex, and laws don't really ever impede consenting adults. (or minors for that matter, but that's a different subject).

The point was that women were property, and your virgin chattel lost ALL VALUE along with their virtue.  So yes, it was really important to stop, punish, corral and shame premarital sex because it destroyed the marriage (and thus monetary) value of your property.
There's no reason to institute rules against premarital sex WITHOUT ALSO bringing back chattel slavery.  There's absolutely no value to these rules in and of themselves.

Jehovah Elohim speaking through Moses prescribes execution by stoning for women who can't prove they were virgins on their wedding night.

Deuteronomy 22:20-21:

But if [the husband's accusation that a girl wasn't a virgin on her wedding night] be true, and the tokens of virginity be not found for the damsel:Then they shall bring out the damsel to the door of her father's house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she die: because she hath wrought folly in Israel, to play the whore in her father's house: so shalt thou put evil away from among you.

The two have always been interlinked to those of us who read between the lines.  The Christian Taliban's insistence that heterosexual marriage is the only framework under which ANY sexual activity is not evil is a far-reaching dogma indeed and if enacted would lead to a horrific, repressive society that few people, including most Evangelicals, would truly wish to live in.

You can bet that in such a society, however, that the religious-political elite would enjoy many, many pleasures forbidden to the masses, just as they currently do in conservative religious organizations.

These idiots have no concept of anthropology or history. They seem to think that people have lived in one nuclear family (husband, wife, their children under 18) in one household after marriage for 100% of the human race since homo sapiens existed.

They also think that nobody ever practiced any kind of contraception or abortion before Sanger and Roe v. Wade, respectively. Which is most certainly NOT the case. And that fetuses have always been worshiped and adored as live children, which is not even the case in the Old Testament.

You must be a Republican to come up with that comparison. I can't murder 20 first graders in seconds with my penis, but I can have consensual sex with someone with it. There's no such thing as consensual murder. Do you see the difference now?

There IS a theory that dragons tend to be passed down to us, with combined features of all the critters that we land based primates are most fearful of. Big ass reptiles, big ass birds, big ass cats and ursids. We mashed up all these features into mythic monsters that exemplified our greatest fears, and fears that plains and sometimes water dwelling primates were most careful of. It comes down to ancient cautions of the critters that would drag us down, pluck us from the grass, or snatch us from the river or lakeside. Not exactly a conscious and active fear, but one that was hardwired into us from our days as wandering primates. Big ass predators like terror birds--who sort of went extinct as humans came onto the scene--would certainly qualify as something that land based primates would want to avoid like the dickens, and to be fair, as descendants of the dinosaurs, about as close to being hunted by a velociraptor as we could ever imagine, only with more head crunching than eviscerating claw action.

If we want to have less folks on welfare, less folks with kids growing up in single parent homes, less folks struggling, then we NEED to have sex ed, and we need to have contraceptives available, so women can have more than abstinence as a method of birth control. Because, Bristol Palin pretty much proved that even in homes with openly religious and smugly superior morals aren't immune to teen age hormones and bunk ups outside marriage. Which is odd, considering that the timeline for Palin's own first child and her own marriage, there might have been a pre-marriage bunk up in her own history. Or maybe Bristol just developed REALLY fast.

The FRC is about as credible and reliable as the rhythm method though, and I welcome them telling the NASCAR crowd that they shouldn't have sex outside marriage. That will go over great. About as well as campaigning against alcohol, gambling, and eating at Red Lobster...

That's funny, because I've been working on a story based on some research that pointed to Neanderthals having, in some ways, more developed areas of the brain than humans. It led to a story about Neanderthals with psi powers, never developing much for material technology, and instead wiped out after a tragic accident destroyed their greatest city, reducing the survivors to trying to escape the hellhole that their hubris in trying to tap the sun for power, and throwing these last remnants into the wilderness and pitted against the savage and untamed homo sapiens. I based the locations of nuclear glass found in odd places, and entirely out of timeline, and oddly enough, there were Neanderthals and other early hominds near the sites, so it sort of flowed from there. It is not a short though, and novellas are a hard frippin' sell these days...

Well, birds ARE the descendants of dinosaurs. Then again, mammals evolved from reptilians as well. Synapsids were a freaky bunch of reptiles--including the sailback Dimetrodon. The Sauropsids really had a great run, and birds are still doing their thing. It's not surprising that some birds fell back into roles that other Sauropsids had filled before. Especially given their hip structure was already in position for such a set up.

7) Wonder why so many people break the law instead of starving quietly, or getting a McJob for take-home pay that won't take them home.

The Republican party has reached a level of uncool that is really unsustainable. They have gotten so uncool that they now have declared that they have redefined "cool" as to include all of the boring things that suck, like stamp-collecting and frisbee golf, and have redefined "uncool" to include all of the exciting fun things like fooling around with a woman and kung-fu movies.

They have to be stopped. They can't get laid because they're boring, bald, and depressing, they are to humanity what Velveeta is to cheese. I'm not saying Velveeta is a bad product, but it's a coagulated cheese SAUCE, not a cheese. For what it's good for (nachos) it's fine, but for crackers, it's inferior. When a man cannot get laid, he begins to think that the grapes he cannot reach are at fault. Those grapes are so sour they need to be reined in! This sourness has to be toned down and made much more calm and sedate, they say of the produce they cannot even sample. it's as if 3.5 billion female voices all said "I'll have none of that, thank you" when offered their cocks, their time, their company, and these men really resent this. They resent not being in power,  they resent the fact that a female with reasonable attractiveness has a power of influence over others. They want the world to be controlled with force and violence, instead of persuasion and seduction, for they have no tools to use in the world women would create.

AdamK: this guy's marriage must be pretty sex-starved

Nah. His wife just closes her eyes and thinks about Channing Tatum while he closes his eyes and thinks about Channing Tatum.

nmrsnr: spongeboob: When you learn history from the Bible you are not really learning history.

Yeah, ask Uriah the Hittite how he felt working for Jahweh's chosen king, David.

Oh wait, you can't. David had Uriah murdered on the battlefield after getting Uriah's wife pregnant, so he could continue to boink her. NIIIIIICE.

abb3w: That sort of principled conservative stance seems likely to get a spectacular response from younger voters.

You know I can't call my self a republican because many of the "reps" in congress actually think this.

I can't call myself a democrat because I loves my guns even if I agree that teh gays should be able to do whatever the fark they want.

Damnit why can't I get a reasonable person to vote for?

Kittypie070: hubiestubert: Bless their poor, dear, sweet hearts.

Good luck with that. I mean, even a paragon of virtue like Sarah Palin couldn't keep her sweet daughter a virgin before marriage, and if the Chosen One couldn't manage it...

Dude I read that and projectile-hurled like EVERYWHERE, man!! WHHOOAAAA!!

Glicky: CapeFearCadaver: serial_crusher: CapeFearCadaver: But if something happens I could have a large foreign object inserted into my hoo-haw that I don't want in there.

you're complaining about a guy turning a sex thread into a gun thread... and in the process you turn it into a rape thread?  So, can we start talking about 3D printing next?

Actually, abortion... because if I can't get birth control because some guy like in TFA had his way and I got pregnant, then yes, I'd have to have an abortion. I can't financially afford to be pregnant. If I had to have an abortion I'd have to have a vaginal wand inserted in order to get the State mandated ultrasound.

So yes, it does follow with the article and TFT, thank you very much.

If they remove access to contraception, you can bet your access to safe abortion will be long gone...

FTFY. You take away access, all you do is make it more dangerous for the women who are going to seek them regardless.

about to go way off topic here, but I find it interesting how closely that parallels the "criminals don't obey gun control laws" argument, given the generalizations that usually hold true for people who hold either viewpoint.

Lee Jackson Beauregard: NateAsbestos: WinoRhino: Republicans: Government so small, it fits inside your vagina.

In their defense, it takes a lot of cajones to run on the "we hate sex!" platform.

People naturally see this as a religious thing.  But it's not.   It's a culture thing.

Here in China, a girl having to be a virgin until marriage is still a pretty big deal, especially in the more conservative south.  This doesn't come from Christian influance.

And, interestingly, it is perpetiated by the girls themselves.  They slut shame each other.

Exactly how I feel about gun control.  Government doesn't belong in the bedroom or the gun cabinet.

Yeah, exactly the same thing.   Guns have been around as long as sex and are just as natural.

is it possible for you to enter a thread without sucking on your guns like a bag of dicks?

How exactly should you suck a bag of dicks? Do you have to suck them all to climax?

so if single people are forbidden to have sex and married people are disinterested in sex, is he really advocating for a sex free society?

The difference being, they think it would be a spectacularly favorable reaction.

You sound Libertarian.
