Since this will be covered down in the thread, I'll just start off with it.

WESTBORO BAPTIST CHURCH IS A LITIGIOUS SCAM GROUP. NOTHING MORE. They use emotional topics to provoke responses, then sue!

All these people do is skirt the fine line between provocation and free speech, and try to entice some poor, dumb sucker into attacking them. Then they sue the city, the police department, that dumb sucker, and the family of whoever they are protesting for an amount which is JUST below their liability insurance limit, to make it more attractive for them to offer a quick settlement. They then depart, attention in hand from the event, to whatever they can get into next.

Every member of their 90-strong, family church is a lawyer, paralegal, or involved in the legal field in some manner. They are VERY GOOD at what they do. In addition, if you pay attention to their major protests, it is always the same people who protest and provoke. Because they know what they're doing. Sure, they add in a few kids and teenagers to tug at legal heart(purse)strings, which makes it all the more profitable when they can portray themselves as the victim.

The best thing ANYONE can do is ignore these people. Do not pay attention to them. They thrive on attention - media and real life - that they get from spreading a horrific, abhorrent message.

Do not pay attention to their protests.
Do not counterprotest.
Do not even give them a second thought.

That is how they fail. When they fail to get an emotional response out of people, they CANNOT sue for anything profitable.

I think in Snyder vs. Phelps they were awarded $16,000. That's a hell of a scam for 3-4 year case that went all the way to the SCOTUS.
Know of any other big awards to support that oft-repeated claim?

From interviews from his estranged family members, Phelps is a manipulative, abusive, hell-and-damnation zealot who believes in what he's doing.

Snyder v. Phelps was brought by Albert Snyder, not by Fred Phelps. And the reason it went all the way to the SCOTUS, and was fought so vehemently, is that Albert Snyder's initial lawsuit award of 10.9 MILLION would have bankrupted the Phelps clan. That's why they fought it as a free speech issue.

Yes, I'm aware.
I mention it because it's the only court case I can find that has a monetary award going to the Phelps clan, and at that, it's not exactly a windfall.

Do you know of legal actions brought by Phelps and family, and/or associated monetary awards on which you're basing the claim of a litigious scam?
Everything I've read on him points to him truly being a nutter, keeping his family in line through fear. I've seen literally nothing to support the litigious scam group claims other than repeated assertions, which only cite that his family members work various jobs in the legal field.

I'm not doubting he's a nutter in the least. However, his MO is to take settlements from the towns and individuals he involves in litigation, and then skip town with all the free publicity he wants. It's rather hard to track down settlement documents and figures without dealing directly with those townships, and I really don't care much to involve personal time and money in doing so.

These people, however, are nothing but highly successful real life trolls. They have no political power. Even the traditional "hate groups" want nothing to do with them. When the KKK thinks you're an idiot, that's saying something.

Ignoring these people, and letting their group and message fester and die, would be the best for everyone involved.

Yes, very misleading use of past-tense there. He was - and still is - "deeply prejudiced". There is no way they'll ever be able to bury Fred Phelps: there would be a constant risk of flooding from people stopping by to piss on that grave.

I'm still amazed that the petition to have Westboro officially labelled as a hate group didn't make it.  Forcing them to pay taxes would have been delicious.

And then earmarking those tax dollars for LGBT civil rights groups would have been fabulous.

I used to think that Phelps should simply be executed as a subhuman monster.  Now I feel that a sweeter vengeance would be extending his lifespan to force him to experience all the rest of his family waking up and leaving Westboro.  Make him see how the rest of the world is doing just fine, thanks.  Make him live the final few years alone and unwanted, without even fellow bigots to reassure him in his social echo chamber, before he is finally allowed to kill himself.

Schadenfreude is wonderful, even if I can only spell it properly two times out of five.

We'd never let that slip by. When this f*cker dies, tens of thousands are going to show up at his grave, laughing and taunting his family, holding signs that read "Fred Phelps is in Hell."

Finding out that he died quietly and was buried two weeks ago would be a tragedy.

I mean, with a large enough group of "participants" statistics tell us they would only have a few months at best before someone plows through their latest gathering.

Now that I've read that page there STILL doesn't seem to be any proof of the claims that they are in it for the money and that it's all a big scam.  That page mentions two settlements in which the WBC earned less than $50,000 total.

I am more inclined to think that they DO believe all the hateful crap they spout and that their barratry (or threats of such) are just a side bonus for them.

Tonight you're all gonna be part of a social experiment. Through the magic of diesel fuel and ammonium nitrate, I'm ready right now to blow you all sky high. Anyone attempts to get off their boat, you all die. Each of you has a remote... to blow up the other boat. At midnight, I blow you all up. You choose... oh, and you might want to decide quickly, because the people on the other boat might not be so noble.

That's because people have wised up to them recently.

Funny how nobody cared much when they were only badgering the family of some poor gay who was beaten to death.  Back then only Michael Moore was counter-protesting them (hilariously I might add).  Once they started showing up at MILITARY funerals, though... hoo boy, you'd swear it was the end of the world!

While I think Fred genuinely has an insane hatred of gays, gays are so used to being hated that he wasn't getting the hostile reaction he wanted.  That's why WBC upped the ante and started broadening their "God Hates ___" umbrella.

A few years ago, I read a profile of Phelps in the local "alternative" weekly, written by some guy who claimed to be a gay friend of the family. The writer said Phelps wasn't really a bigot; he was just the world's biggest troll. I found the story believable. That doesn't mean I think it's true, just that, if you really care enough to dig into the issue, maybe that's a possibility. I don't care enough about the motives to dig that deeply. I'm content to just disagree with the actions themselves.
