(Computerworld (Australia))   Tech analysts say the long-awaited "iPad killer" is finally here. Of course, other tech analysts say they've got it all wrong. Not that it matters, since it's the iPad mini   (computerworld.com.au) divider line 19

Except it's not a phone.  So kinda like an iPod.

The iPad Mini seems like a suckers bet right now because you know that within a year or two they will upgrade it to a full Retina Display.

The bigger problem with the current iPad for Apple is that they've run out of things to bump up for the next generation. The CPU and GPU are already fast as hell, and the screen is gorgeous. In time, they can tweak it with quad and octo core processors, but I really don't know if the apps will really benefit, especially since tablets don't do the kind of heavy multitasking a full computer does. It just seems like they hit a plateau fairly quickly.

Personally I'm waiting for the mini iPad mini. I really want something to fit that gap in my life. My life feels so incomplete without having a tablet slightly bigger than my phone and small enough to almost fit in a normal.pocket. It will do all the things my phone can do but it will be an apple product. My life will be complete, even if it digs into my legs when I walk.

You can put them in a terrarium and watch them fight to the death, instead of buying a scorpion and a centipede, or whatever?

The end goal is that they want it to be powerful enough to be a standalone computer, and they're getting their incrementally. Microsoft has already jumped to that step, but their price point with the Slate is likely higher than demand.

Guys, guys:
Check this out, OK?
They're already ahead on that curve, way ahead.

I think what makes the iPad mini so great is the fact that is it just large enough that you can't take it anywhere without a fanny pack to put it in. Now if they would just invent a product that fills the gap between a tablet phone and a mini tablet.

And yet, the damned thing will still be perfectly functional. So, no, it really doesn't matter.

It fits in my coat pocket just fine. All tablets are going to require something bigger than the pocket on your shirt.

As long as it is cold outside there does exist a transport option for certain smaller tablets. Also a purse/backpack could work for those who always have one on them. But the fanny pack would be a less cumbersome option in the months where a coat wouldn't work.

My galaxy tab 7 plus fits in the back pocket of my pants and jeans just fine.

The Nexus 7 does too.  I've seen a bunch of iPad mini's, and for all the work Apple does with form factors, and getting the best, most convenient shape, the iPad mini seems ridiculously out of sorts.

It's a tablet, and the entire point of the thing is to display text, images, and video. If the screen resolution sucks, it isn't perfectly functional, at least for me. YMMV, but I'm not shelling out for a Mini until it is at least as sharp as the Nexus 7 or the Kindle Fire HD.

Are these the same idiots who say the PC is dead because everyone who wants one has one?
