Yes!  Buy a dying industry in order to increase your influence with the demographic that already agrees with you!  What do those young people with their smart phones and hippity hop know anyway?

2013-03-13 10:17:43 AM
If this happens, I wonder if they'll start publishing their bullshait on their Angel Soft toilet paper...

2013-03-13 10:22:31 AM
Why are the headlines getting so much meaner lately?

2013-03-13 10:34:27 AM
Sure. Because the best way to revive a dying fourth-estate institution is to jerk the wheel hard right in the largest, most liberal and ethnically-diverse city in the largest blue state in the country. THAT'LL help circulation. They're only doing this so they can shrug and throw up their hands in a year, shrug, and say, "Hey, we tried," and then write a few billion off on their already-at-0% taxes.

On the upside, I'm sure if you hooked up a few wires to the ends of Otis Chandler's casket, the high-RPM spin it'll start doing might generate enough power to help with the rolling blackouts, so there's that.

2013-03-13 10:35:17 AM
And yeah, I said "shrug" twice. I still can't get used to the new preview system.

Let them buy the LA Times.  Just keep their fingers off my High Times *cough*.

2013-03-13 11:01:43 AM
yeah, that would be pretty god damn funny just to watch the mass explosion of heads....from a journalistic standpoint, it would suck ass...though the LA Times isn't exactly what one would call "unbiased", going from a hard left bent to a hard right one isn't exactly a great idea...

Alternatively, the losses still might be cheaper than donating to yet another PAC.

Really? There are thousands upon thousands of people on the Left who saw a movie in which GW Bush was murdered; did that bother you?

The Left - of which you are member - constantly calls people on the Right 'bigots' 'racists' and 'anti-women' when it was the Left that called Connie Rice an 'Aunt Jemima' and Colin Powell a 'house ***ger'.
Did that bother you?

It's the Left that constantly screams about right-wing 'voter suppression' and yet..AND YET it is always Leftists/Liberals/Dems that are charge with voter fraud. Does this bother you?

Rich Leftist George Soros spends hundreds million dollars to influence and push a far-Leftist agenda. Does that bother you?

And yet a couple of rich conservatives who want to buy a newspaper and THAT bothers you?

You're a fraud and hypocrite and are be-clowning yourself here.

Sort of funny how your first sentence takes great pains to point out what a liberal paradise California is, while the final sentence points out that the state also can't keep their own power grid working.

The right wing wouldn't read it anyway. They have Fox News, talk radio and one or two specific books a month making Obama out as an Angry Black Man from Somewhere Else who will be putting everyone in camps any second now. They don't go outside that bubble for anything.

2013-03-13 01:20:29 PM
I guess if they bought it The LA Times would still be less of a tabloid than it would under Murdoch.

2013-03-13 01:51:44 PM
I love the hypocrisy of the left when they try to insult those they disagree with.  The supposed champions of homosexuals yet they love to say things like teabagger and koch-sucker, implying that homosexuality is a negative thing.   Also, it's pronounced coke, not kotch or cock.

2013-03-13 01:52:50 PM
Good! I've always said that the Los Angeles Times is a better paper than Los Angeles deserves.

That's what happens when you don't balance expenditures with income. Shame the federal government couldn't learn from California's mistakes.

/and it is still a liberal paradise

2013-03-13 03:18:12 PM
Thanks Peki now I've got Coolio's "gangsta paradise" running through my head with liberal instead of gangsta

It's not about money in the LA Times, it's about influence. Own the media, you own the public's perception, you influence elections, everything. LA Times may not do well, but other Kock industries benefit.

The Koch brothers have been playing this game a long time. There are plenty of people in LA that are amenable to a right-wing message, if presented well - LA is famous for the car culture, for example, and OF COURSE green "weenies" want to take away your cars, right? Once you get people thinking like that, even if they stay democratic it pulls the party strongly to the right.

Buying influence is easy if you have the money. It's not just contributing to campaigns, it's funding the research that supports your ideology, it's owning the news that promotes your ideology, it's a lot of things that add up. Get it in people's heads and they will sell your message for you, to their own detriment.

Yup, and in general people are ok with this as long as they agree with who is attempting to buy the influence.

So, basically turn it into the Washington Times-a money losing newspaper that only exists to spout right wing herpaderp?

DesertCoyote: Angel Soft toilet paper...

Great. I had no idea that they owned it. Dammit. Thats my favourite as it can handle a good hard nose blow and doesnt have a lot of lint that makes me sneeze. Time to search  for another brand.

On topic- I read the Times, and would prefer that someone else bought the paper.

Looks like it's time to reboot the Herald Examiner.

The headline would make sense if it wasn't for the fact their name is pronounced like "Coke".

That's just what the Tribune newspapers need is some dicks to run 'em
