that translation has to be off.... Too funny:  there are no birds in the trees, apart from these.  These birds will be eaten on Tuesday... and they are yummy.  Awesome.

They'd better be careful. The North Koreans living on bark will be jealous of our bird-eating ways.

And in another, a bearded, apparently homeless man waits in line for food from a street truck vendor. "This man, a former Republican candidate from Oregon, is having to get coffee made of snow from trucks," our narrator grimly intones.

Please.  There are no Republicans in Oregon.

There are in Southern Oregon. But we lack snow trucks, like those rich northerners have.

/I love the merry little jingle of snow trucks, with their snow cones and popsicles.

It's a good thing that North Koreans can't interact with Americans, because thanks to systemic malnutrition they'd all break their necks looking up at them. Even the bums in America eat better than the average North Korean.

Wouldn't be more of an indictment for a country of starving people, and to show the real America would reveal the lies they've been taught. My understanding is that it's not so much 'we eat snow and pigeons' as it is 'we're an evil race of monsters'.  And they have had to admit that South Korea wasn't doing too badly as they couldn't totally suppress that information. But I think they went the 'they long for racial purity and the one true way' or some shiat instead.

Whole country is a cult and I really really feel sorry for its victims.

If these were supposed to be Americans, why was one sitting in front of a sign for Dell Computers that wasn't written in English or Spanish?  Also, Dell computers haven't been considered expensive since the 1990s.

I'm just bummed I missed the North Korean Government hand out line that was here in the U.S.  I'm also assuming that there are several starving North Koreans who are just as bummed that they also missed that line.

I'd say almost nothing is too weird for the No. Korean government; but if you're not sure about the translation, here's an idea: Find someone who speaks Korean, and as them to translate. Then you'd know for sure if this is real propaganda, or some South Korean film student's idea of a funny.

2013-03-13 12:57:48 AM
It's too bad that to the poor north korean peasants, fire roasted blue jay, and a cup of snow-joe and a nice tent is an upgrade. When your last crock pot dinner was grandpa, or little timmy who didn't make it through the winter, some blue jay probably sounds pretty farking palatable.

Faaaake. North Korea does not import coffee, they do not have coffee, so why would they mock us for making coffee from snow? nah, photoshop based on a somewhat garbled translation of a press release where the north Koreans claimed to have unicorn bones or some such and it turned out they claimed to have found the city of a king who was linked in legend to a unicorn like animal (and it turned out to be even more silly, because everyone knew where the city was and it was just a new building or something less cool)

I'd say almost nothing is too weird for the No. Korean government; but if you're not sure about the translation, here's an idea: Find someone who speaks Korean, and as them to translate. Then you'd know for sure if this is real propaganda, or some South Korean film student's idea of a funny.

I saw my best friend die a few years ago, from lack of basic medial care because he was sick, unemployed and uninsured. In other news, doctors have announced BUY MORE MAKE UP YOU HARLOT, OR DADDY WILL NEVER LOVE YOU AND YOUR HUSBAND WILL LEAVE YOU FOR YOUR BEST FRIEND!

It's funny, because many Americans just don't care to critically think at all, they just consume whatever is right in front of them.  I remember something about yellowcake and mobile nukes and EMP blasts and hackers, I just forget which boogeyman is responsible for what.

This country isn't perfect, but when's the last time you saw someone starving to death.

Homeless people are invisible.

Not in the Bay Area they aren't.

also, apparently they are going to start forcing out all the hobos who live in tents along the guadalupe river trail. I kinda feel bad for the folks, they have no where to go, they have a pretty good setup and are invisible to anyone not on the trail. It's a damn shame.

I don't believe the video showed anyone "starving to death" either. But it does happen here, when children, the disabled or the the elderly are abused by their caretakers. I saw my best friend die a few years ago, from lack of basic medial care because he was sick, unemployed and uninsured. I've seen a mentally ill man beaten almost unconscious by police just 10 yards away from me. I've seen far too many homeless veterans hanging out on the streets of our nation's capitol. There are homeless camps in this city FFS. I've driven through industrial hell-holes in the Rust Belt, and seen abject poverty in the Northeast ghettos and in Appalachia. Just a couple weeks ago, the feds busted a large human trafficking ring in this town, where women were brought here from other countries and kept as sex-slaves.

It could be a case of a lot of places sucking a bit or a few places sucking so much they through off the curve irreconcilably. KInd of like how the average life expectancy was in the 30's for ages, but it was because so many people died as babies.

The sad part is, we could be all of the things it says on the label, we could patch this joint back together and slowly pull ourselves out of the muck if 1% of the population didn't need to have their ongoing "how many billions" dick waving contest more than they need air.  The wealthy are all for wealth redistribution.  They just want it to happen 3.99 at a time, 10 million time a day and in their favor.  When they're asked to invest it in something other than a chance to leverage more billions as quickly as possible, they get all shirty and twitchy.  That's not what money's for, you pathetic bastards, and it never will be.

They aren't camping out in a park though, if they were I would agree. There is a multi-use trail that runs along a river for miles and miles. They camp out where ever they can find a place well hidden, under trees and bushes and the like. Hell, you can't really even find them unless you are looking hard. They have to be some where and where they are seems a lot safer (for everyone) than the alternatives which appear to be freeway overpasses, hidden by trees next to the Cal Train tracks and in alleyways. I haven't ever heard of them being a nuisance, they are just deciding to crack down on something that's been the status quo for as long as I can remember. I really don't see how they are a problem, again if they were I would agree with you, but they are not impacting *anyone* else's usage of the public space.

It affects mine. When i go out for a walk in a public park i don't want to stumble into someones home. And they are transient and present a host of other problems. If the police are kicking them out its either at the wish of the land owner or its public land. Its creepy and it encourages vagrants to think that camping out in the woods by a trail is ok. Its not. It would creep me out if my running trail ran past a camp ground full of vagrants and transients. You just like to imagine they are a bit less homeless if they camp out in the woods like an adventure rather than on the street where they look like the homeless people they are.

I guess all I can add is that they are not close to the trail, nor is the river. The trail just follows the path of the river. You aren't going to run into them or see them at all, which I guess is my point. I'm familiar with the area and I don't really see how they are a problem. You'll never inadvertently stumble upon them and you wouldn't know they are there unless you go looking for them. They don't have many options on the Peninsula and this is the best of what I've seen. I don't think there's anything else to add, so let us amicably agree to disagree.

Looking around online it appears that there are very few (although not none) facilities available for the homeless, many less than I would expect for a city whose population is just shy of a million.

I lied, I have one more thing to add. At Berkeley I saw a lot of homeless folks and pan handlers. They were a much bigger nuisance in the downtown area and everywhere outside of the campus than these guys down by the river. If the options are wandering the streets and being in people's way on the sidewalks or living in a tent off the beaten path, I think the later option is preferable for everyone.

I trek in the deep bush in my river valley all the time. I find homeless dudes little hideaways all the time. 99% of the time its a gross old matress and a bunch or garbage piled around a fire hazard of a cooking area. Oh and empty booze containers and dirty (like actually muddy) porno mags strewn everywhere. Yuck. Lady Indica: parahaps: cc_rider: Lady Indica: cc_rider: Fake propaganda video is fake, but still pretty damn funny. On the other hand, there's a lot of things I've witnessed here that are far worse than this video (mostly not from here) purports to show.

This country isn't perfect, but when's the last time you saw someone starving to death.

There's a whole 'nother America that most people don't think about.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate.

All those moments, lost in time. Like tears, in the rain.

Time...to die.

It's a Korean video that shows some rather unfortunate scenes. I don't speak Korean and can't say with any certainty that any or all of the scenes were staged. The video does make a point to show some people dealing with a winter environment.
My guess is that this has all been taken out of context, we're looking at some good aspects of living in best Korea.

Ok, that video was totally awesome and also sad because there is a ring of truth to it. There are enough homeless people in the US. There are tent cities. Food trucks/soup kitchens are a reality. People living in train stations and nobody caring? Yes, that happens.

Video would have been better if they had portrayed some obese people on hoverounds as the leaders though.

buckler: What does it say?

I can't translate the entire thing. A, my Korean isn't that good, and B, the narrator is too loud for me to catch much but fragments. What I was looking for were specific telltale pieces of vocabulary; for instance, Korean is pretty rigid when it comes to description of "delicious," and would always translate "yummy" as "맛있는 ." I didn't hear that at all.

Furthermore, when referring to the DPRK you would expect to hear "북한 ," but that phrase doesn't seem to pop up anywhere I could hear.

There are just some clues throughout that indicate that the dubbed narration doesn't match the original speech.

Because America, who has no money, would cleverly disguise their worst cities to look like european cities in case a NK film crew was to come by and give them a bad rap.

How I would love to see this scene:
US Customs agent: Hi, what's your purpose for entering the US?
NK film crew: Yeah, Dear Leader sent us from North Korea to make a film about how bad life sucks here, and to hand out free coffee, DPRK cakes, and tent walls.
US Customs: Yeah, that ain't happening. We've got plenty of snow coffee, thank you very much.
NK film crew: No, this is coffee coffee.
US Customs: And you say you have....cakes?
NK film crew: Yes. DPRK cakes. No bird. Very yummy.
US Customs: Might I....have one of these cakes? I didn't get a bird today.
NK film crew: Certianly. Dear Leader cares very much for the suffering of poor Americans who cannot live like glorious North Korea.
US Customs: O_o      o_O *stamp* You can go.

The funny thing is that there is plenty of stock footage of homeless American people on the internet they could use to make it look like everyone is starving, and some footage of Detroit would work to make it look like the US is a wasteland. Why use foreign countries and pretend it's the US, when there is enough US footage to show the same thing. Unless it's all part of the troll, then well done, I say.

My uncle lived just outside Klamath Falls for several years.  When I'd visit, there were certain times of the day when every AM radio station you could receive was playing Rush Limbaugh's show.

I later heard that Klamath Falls is (or was?) one of the KKK's few remaining strongholds in the country, as well.  And at least as recently as 2004, the right-wing crazies in Klamath Falls and elsewhere were a large enough voting bloc that Oregon was considered a swing state.

That's like the North Korean fisherman "jumped" the border after listening about the horrible parking conditions in Seuol.

Horrible parking problems isn't something they have in North Korea.

In Romania (I think, possibly Hungary), their commie dictator allowed the soap opera "Dallas" on TV to show the horrible decadent ways of the American Rich.

Instead they revolted because they wanted mansions and cars like on Dallas, there's even a Dallas theme park there.
