Gordie Howe got his first Gordie Howe Hat Trick on Oct. 11, 1953 against the Maple Leafs when he assisted on Red Kelly's goal, scored his own, and fought Flaman for the third time. His second occurred in the same season, March 21, 1954, when he scored the opening goal against the Maple Leafs and assisted on two Ted Lindsay goals. He also nearly high-sticked Ted "Teeder" Kennedy's ear off before they fought.

Interesting... I've been mislead on this for years then.

Pavel Datsyuk has a Gordie Howe Hat Trick under his belt (and he wasn't trying), though I'd prefer it if he doesn't get into fights.

These guys play down at the local rink. Most have been involved in the game locally for forever. Surprised to see them on Fark.

Actually I know plenty of older folks who played in my recreational hockey league. If you don't play in a league where checking is allowed, ice hockey is actually quite safe. It's fantastic exercise and reasonably low impact for those with bad knees and such.

My favorite part of that game was that the sbnation bruins site was making fun of Brandon Sutter before the game, calling him a "minor leaguer"...

Another blown 3rd period lead...

Jack and Brick can stop using the term "uncharacteristic" now.

Thecompetitive adult league I used to play in had quite a few old-timers. One of them was a French Canadian former pro.

Even though the league was full of ex-college players and ex-minor leaguers in their mid to late 20's, he could still out-skate and out-shoot probably 95% of us in the league.   And he was just skilled, he was nasty.

Heaven help you if you bumped him, or worse you got your stick up high on him.  He would end you.

I've played for around 30 years and was what you would call an agitator. (I drew a lot of penalties and took my fair share.)

He was the only guy I've ever been afraid of messing with.
