Actually, no. If you take an iPad from someone you know, and you suspect that they will be calling the authorities, you DO thank them, and you make every effort to make it sound like you were the recipient of a gift.

Well, you see, the above quote is exactly what you shouldn't do. What you should do when the cops show up is to be apologetic ("Well officer, she told me that since I use it more than she does and I let her keep the sofa and ottoman, she told me to keep the iPad. But if she's changed her mind, I'll be happy to return it, if she gives me my stuff back. Sorry you had to get involved. I think it was a big misunderstanding.").
