I am a bleeding heart liberal, and this is a ridiculous headline, both subby's and TFA. She answered a question about whether the GOP scared off women voters by saying basically, "There were  some Republicans who  may have frightened  some women, but they were the exception not the rule." and, bam, "LAURA BUSH: REPUBLICANS "FRIGHTEN" WOMEN"

We've got Armadillos in our trousers. It's really quite frightening.

Anecdotal evidence is usually not meaningful, but all the women I know who voted for democratic candidates said that they found the GOP's position on women's rights appalling, and all the women I know who voted for republican candidates are either associated with the military or are deeply Christian (if not an outright fundamentalist).

The former first lady is probably correct, but with a caveat. The pro-rape rhetoric seems only to have disgusted women who were probably never going to vote for the GOP anyway. My logic is bad and my evidence is limited, but it's some food for thought.

Well, actually, if the woman was legitimately raped (not just being slutty), her body would have shut the whole baby making process down, so there would be no rape baby.

This is true.

But then again in spring of 2010 she went on Larry King and actually backed Gay marriage and said that abortion should be legal and available.

FTFA: "There are obvious examples of candidates that were - that I think frightened some women, but they were the exception rather than the norm in the party," Bush said.

Ya know lady, even if that were true (and I do not for a second believe that), I don't exactly recall the rest of your tolerant, broad-minded party rushing to repudiate these @$$holes.  You are all of you complicit by your silence.

/yes, I know there were a few who spoke out.  Very few.  Given the party's track record, I'm gonna insist on proof that they were not callously trying to save their own necks.

FTFA: Bush said that what she liked most about the Republican Party was that there's room for all opinions on different issues.  "And I'm glad that in our party we have room for all," she said. "I think that's important too."

How on God's green earth can you manage to choke out such a motherfarking hypocritical lie?

2013-03-12 04:11:36 PM
That's not what she said, but whatever.

Anybody who isn't wealthy, white and male should be frightened of republicans. You can complain that the ones who speak up to say nasty things about minorities, women and the poor aren't the majority, but it's not like Paul Ryan, who ran as the veep candidate you may remember, wasn't knee deep in the same crazy anti-abortion nonsense when he was writing up that restrictive bill and cozying up to that same rapey "minority".

You can't fool everybody forever. These people aren't really outliers, they're just the ones that can't keep their lips zipped in public when people start paying attention to them. That's why they're always around every friggin' election. They're not a minority, they're just the ones that burble up to the surface.

It's well-known that Laura Bush is the "black sheep" of the Bushes - she was a Democrat until she married Dubya (according to wiki). She doesn't think that abortion is the evilest evil ever to Democrat a liberal and as recently as 3 years ago says she believes nationwide marriage equality is an inevitability.

She's not gone full-GOP (about 75-80% there), so occasionally she lets a nugget of truth out.

Sometimes when she watches a Rand Paul filibuster, she wonders, is he some sort of giant bird? She doesn't know, because she's a cavewoman, and that's the way she thinks!

This is Fark, and we troll mercilessly (and mindlessly) around here; however, I have you favorited as Certified Queen of the Star Children, so I'll give you some slack.

My people thank you. Your aura is spruce.

Spruce? Why...I've always liked spruce. It's like you know me from some other plane of existence!

I'm pining for both of you

Good God, why was this thread ever greened?

So we could needle you.

Well, I'm not just going to sit here and take it, like some sap.

Yew people need to quit it with the puns.

Dude, just relax and go with the phloem.

Going with the phloem is pretty poplar if you don't mind sporting redwood.

i've often wondered what Laura Bush might have been absent the Bush family.....imho, she is the example of a woman denied her own path and too polite/scared/young to have tossed the reigns of early expectation...in some sad way she reminds me of princess diana - you farkers will surely add your own car accident joke where you see fit

of all that clan, i like her best

Dr Dreidel: It's well-known that Laura Bush is the "black sheep" of the Bushes - she was a Democrat until she married Dubya (according to wiki). She doesn't think that abortion is the evilest evil ever to Democrat a liberal and as recently as 3 years ago says she believes nationwide marriage equality is an inevitability.

She's not gone full-GOP (about 75-80% there), so occasionally she lets a nugget of truth out.

// and she looks like Jabba the Hutt in person - not her figure, the makeup-cake wrinkles on that Stepford rictus
// YE
// GODS

I'd put GHWBush as the "white sheep" of the family.  He might have had a rather nasty idea of what was good for the US, but he tended to do what was good (in his mind) for the country while in office.  Not so sure of his CIA stint.

I'm guessing that Laura was put into the Stepford program (or at least under strict family control) after the car crash.  I think if I understood how W. wound up with a less that batshait librarian I would have at least some idea what his public persona is hiding.

I'm rooting for this thread to branch out into a larger discussion of Mrs. Bush's autumn years, has she gone to seed, or found what it takes to bend in the breeze? Does she feel like her life was just bough and sold?

You almost never hear about Republicans publicly criticizing each other (unless one of the Repubs is a Paul, then complain away), so Laura accepting the possibility that Akin etc. shot the party in the foot is still pretty noteworthy.

I like trees too but more like the herbally kind.

FishyFred: GiantRex: Anecdotal evidence is usually not meaningful, but all the women I know who voted for democratic candidates said that they found the GOP's position on women's rights appalling, and all the women I know who voted for republican candidates are either associated with the military or are deeply Christian (if not an outright fundamentalist).

The former first lady is probably correct, but with a caveat. The pro-rape rhetoric seems only to have disgusted women who were probably never going to vote for the GOP anyway. My logic is bad and my evidence is limited, but it's some food for thought.

You forgot something very important: Turnout. These guys said things that angered people and got people talking about issues that heavily favor Democrats.

/she's wrong about one thing
//they aren't the exception

I can believe that from her perspective it seemed like the "exception" because she was exposed to more Republican women due to her social circles.  I also agree that the Republican rhetoric towards women probably motivated a lot of usually politically indifferent women to vote Democratic.
