(Major League Baseball)   Do the Italians stand a chance at all against the Dominicans? Can the US even defeat its own colony? Will that abomination in center field cause an international incident? Puerto Rico is not our Colony. We got it as a spoil of war.

2013-03-12 12:38:05 PM
If Puerto Rico beats the U.S., we can just fix that in the future by granting them statehood.  Then their team will be the U.S. team next time.

Curious...

Why did they play all of Pool 1 first, before playing any Pool 2 games?

Seems odd.  But I don't follow the WBC all that much.

Travel. Pool A was played in Fukuoka, Japan, and Pool B in Taichung, Taiwan. Both fed into Pool 1 which played in Tokyo.
Conversely, Pool C played in San Juan, Pool D in Phoenix.

The semis and finals are in San Fran.

Robbie is looking less than pleased with all these hard slides into second.
Not sure he appreciated Nick Putno slapping him on the ass either.

If nothing else, it's a scout's dream. Think about the amount of guys not tied to an MLB organization out there. Think how many backwater foreign leagues you'd have to troll around to find all of them. The national teams have brought them all in one place for you, and placed them against MLB live fire. Sit back, watch to see who busts out, and sign them before someone else does. To say nothing of all the minor-league prospects out there.

Kenta Maeda, for example. Remember that name. The Hiroshima Tokyo Carp are going to get a very very large posting fee very soon.

There was a poll I saw somewhere the other day that posed the question: "is anyone beginning to care about the WBC?".

Judging by the amount of posts in this thread, I guess the answer is a resounding "NO".

So you're basing the popularity of the WBC on a Fark thread that was greened when the first game was almost over and hours before the game featuring the US even started?

I'm assuming there's no way to see these games via a legal stream.

Why not, it gets as much if not more media coverage in total than soccer on the four letter shiathole.

I continue to be amazed how often organizations and media companies miss the most obvious ways to promote interest in their product. You would think this would be the perfect thing to be hosted as a free (or, at least, no more than $5 for the whole WBC) stream on mlb.com. And then they wonder why people don't watch

I would *love* to watch this. But a) I don't have cable, and even when I did, I only had basic (so no ESPN, no MLB, etc), and b) half the games are on during the workday.

David Wright's having a hell of a WBC. Good to see him drawing walks like they're going out of style.

There is basic cable w/o ESPN?   The only cable/satellite I am even aware of where you don't get ESPN at even the most basic level is that crappy religious "Sky Angel" satellite service.

Notice that I originally asked about being able to do it *legally*.

I mean, if I'm forced into, err, "other" means, then so be it, but I'd rather do it the right way if at all possible.

Comcast has a "broadcast/limited basic" package. It's essentially the local channels (and a couple of others, like QVC and some local govt/community channels) for about $15/month. We don't watch enough live TV to even justify that, which is why it got eventually got dropped. The next lowest tier is $35/mon, and it doesn't include ESPN either (or FX, SyFy, TBS, Spike, MSNBC (although Fox News is there), MTV, or most other channels of actual interest). To get those channels, I'd need to sign up for a package that *STARTS* at $40/mon, and goes up to nearly $60/mon after 6 months.
