I was there when that pic was taken. The hand belongs to my old boss at the WVDA.

Snails confiscated from a flea market.

True story, bro.

What happened to them afterwards?

SuperNinjaToad: My sister who lives in Australia swore to me she once saw a Hustman sprinting across her kitchen floor on it's 2 FARKING legs after it got startled!!!
I'm not too fearful of spiders but I would freak out if I ever see a giant spider running in front of me like it's bipedal!

That alone would be enough for me to nope right out of the country.

texdent: twomutts: I've been living overseas a couple of years now, but I don't remember baseballs being 12". Apparently even baseballs are bigger in Australia!

This makes more sense since I was thinking 'bi baseballs?'

And that's why you should never try to post anything when using a crappy phone while on a very bumpy bus!

The buggers showed up in Florida awhile back.

(Naturally. If it's invasive, imported and dangerous, it will show up in Florida.)

They caused a lot of concern, and then there's this point of view (Link) which might help explain why we have an infestation of huge snakes.

There's a lot of greenery in Florida and it's sub tropical. A large chunk of that greenery consists of crops. The snail is voracious.

If you follow the opinion of the above link and raise it for food, some are bound to escape and raise hell. Besides, experience shows that doing so is not the best idea.

In some states, local ponds were wiped out by fishermen dumping left over live bait in them. (Crawfish.) The Crawfish multiplied and wiped out the food sources for the fish. Someone decided to eat them. It became a prolific industry. Money was made.
Now, no one cares about restoring the ponds. They just want them full of Crayfish to sell.

The same with gators in Florida. We farm them, returning X number to the wild. They're protected from hunters. Only farmed gators may be sold for consumption. Business is good -- and now gators show up in every mud puddle across the state becoming more of a pest than ever before.

The gator farms actively work to keep the gators on the protected list, which serves their interest. So, if you have a taste for gator, you can't walk down to the nearest ditch and shoot one. That will get you put in jail. However, you may buy farmed gator meat.

Imagine the fun if someone were to manage to develop a market for the Giant Snail. It'd probably be illegal to kill them if they're in your yard. (Like with gators.) You'd have to call a company to come and get them -- at a profit to the company.

PLEASE don't come down to Florida.

durbnpoisn: The Irresponsible Captain: Now, that's a bug you could have for dinner. Put it right next to the lobster and crab on my plate.

It's not a bug.  It's a mollusk, more like a clam.  (Lobsters, though, are pretty close to bugs.)
They probably could be delicious with some butter, though.

I see that's been taken care of.

When writing an article about snails the size of baseballs, it would help to include a picture of a snail the size of a baseball, perhaps posed next to a baseball, for reference.
Just sayin' Mr.Suckblog "journalist"

Evil Mackerel: Maybe we can genetically alter them to eat cane toads. What could possibly go wrong?

Funny, I was thinking maybe the cane toads would eat the snails.

/And then die of parasites.
