show me: A lot of them are very conservative, but some that are old enough to remember the depression (not many of those left anymore) are decidedly not.

Most of the ones that I know are 'conservative' but not 'GOP conservative'.

If liberals could ever get over thier distain for rural folks and tweaked a few items to become more of a big tent party, they could win many of these folks over in a hurry.  Most of these folks still have the "I like Ike" buttons.  Choose this path and it would not even be a contest.

This explains it pretty well and is exemplified in the dumbasses in this thread.

Wild Eyed and Wicked: except for a few people who are paid set aside monies, I do not know anyone who get subsidies

So if you don't count the people you know who receive subsidies, the people you know don't receive subsidies.

And to clarify, I'm not singling out farmers. That's the way everybody has been taught to see government:
"We" deserve to participate in government programs.
But "they" are getting unfair handouts.

Yeah, there is always the selfish part of this, however, for food, you don't want to be messing around.

One of the things that this country has going for it is an abundance of food.  For this to continue, you will need to have the ability to keep stability in this sector and many of these subsides attempt to do that.  Not to say that there is not some room for improvement, because there are some really screwed up things with the Farm Bill.  However, the overarching goal is one that this conservative can support.

/no, I don't farm or ranch

That is what I was trying to say - the people I know who get set aside money are actually getting paid not to farm.  The people who are actually farming that I know do not recieve any subsidies.  I do not talk "farm" normally without people who are not used to it...

The mega farms that are paid not to farm are paid so they don't drive the Ma & Pas out of business. Do to the economies of scale and the bulk prices they can get those companies could drive the prices so low that Ma Farmer couldn't stay in business.
So the government is helping them, it's just that most don't get it.

So one side effect of this would seem to be the creation of artificial shortages. It's probably pretty complicated, with the fallow land being able to recover some nutrients, etc. but producing all we can without farking up the land seems like it would be good for our trade balance.

It is really sad how far removed most people are from the source of their own food.

Which translates into price support for some.  As Stealth alluded to, many of these programs are intended to keep small farmers IN buisness.  One or two bad years could wipe a huge number of them out leaving Big Ag to pick over their bones.

It is hard enough to make it as a small farmer/rancher.  As the saying goes, if youare a farmer/rancher you are likely land rich and cash poor.  You are sitting on milllions in assets, but you owe your soul to the bank.  Here in the west where I grew up, the temptation to sell the spread for millions and put all the hard work and meager wages is only offset by the pride that these folks have in the work they do and the history of thier families.

For these folks, the problem is trying to keep the kids involved. That is why the Paul Harvey piece hits home for thoise that know what this life involves.

Pretty easy to live without those as long as you have the other.

Cuz nobody else works hard or has family businesses, only farmers do that.

wedun: HeadLever: Nah, they are all sheep screwing, methhead, hillbilly rednecks that are on welfare. At least that is what 90% of those on Fark really think.

those are all blatant falsehoods except for the welfare part.

farms are bigger welfare recipients than blah people in the city.

I know this might be hard for someone of your limited intelligence, but please, educate yourself on where the subsidies go, then you may come back and have a conversation with the rest of the adults...

Grew up on a farm, went to college, got a job in computers, trying to get back into farming....

Pretty much my life story.  Any successful farmer is a jack of all trades.  Business man, Chemist, Carpenter, Mechanic, Biologist, Mathematician, Nutritionist, Electrician, Engineer, Physicist, etc... All in a practical sense.  Being stupid and farming do not go hand in hand (or they wouldn't for long, because your hands would be the property of an auger if you weren't paying attention).

But, just like everything else, people deride what they do not understand.  My grandfather and dad treated every task on the farm as a learning opportunity, making me figure out in my head how many bushels of corn a grain bin could hold, how to read medication and administer shots, what the chemical makeup of the feed supplement meant, how to handle dangerous chemicals, how to write up the books and do the taxes, replace the belt on a mower and a combine, run wiring, weld, build a shed, etc...

The most important thing, the benefit of a hard days worth of honest labor.  Being able to sit down at the end of the day and appreciate every ache, every bruise, every cut.  Being able to point to a stalk of corn or a steer and go "I raised that".  Not many people get this opportunity.
