JohnAnnArbor: WhoIsWillo: JohnAnnArbor: EMU Hurons.

They're the Eagles now.

That's my point.  For no good reason.  It was the PC "look-at-me-be-righteous" types that got that changed.  The few actual Hurons liked the name.

CMU Chippewa here. When I was taking PhD coursework at Central Michigan, I worked for the Saginaw-Chippewa Indian Tribe's behavioral health services, so I had the nickname conversation with both the university and Sag-Chip leadership. The Tribe has a great relationship with CMU and the Chippewa name is a source of pride for the tribe, university, and community. I hope CMU doesn't go the way of the Hurons, err, Eagles.

meanmutton: Of course, we could have gone with the Emu.  Are they as awesome as an eagle?  Maybe not but they'd be way more unique and would line up nicely with the "Go Emu" cheer.

Also a good point.

THEY HAD TWO BIRDS THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN WAY BETTER TO USE.

/my school should've kept "Savages" but just gotten rid of the Native American imagery

fruitloop: 5. Hawks (9*) SCHOOLS: Hartford, Lehigh [Mountain], Maryland Eastern Shore, Miami [Red], Monmouth, St. Joseph's, Seattle [Red], Southest Missouri [Red], Tennessee-Martin [Sky]

Holy shiat.

Louisiana-Monroe [War], UNC Wilmington [Sea], Wagner [Sea], Kansas [Jay]?

/Redskins forever, Redhawks never

While Redhawks (etc) are a type of Hawk, Jayhawks are people, War Hawks are planes, and Seahawks are actually Ospreys.

Jayhawks are people, not birds.
