The party was co-hosted by the Knight Foundation and Mozilla - why aren't they taking any flak for this? Also, it clearly says the wristbands were handed out by the club where the party was hosted, and that they had nothing to do with the Media Lab. Why isn't the club getting any crap for handing them out?

Not saying the Media Lab doesn't bear any responsibility, but it does seem like they're being scapegoated just a tad.

here here.
It's cheezy bar talk at worst, at best it's a stupid attempt at humor.  Let it go and make me a sammich dammit.

The Captain announces to the passengers that the plane is going to crash.
A woman stands and screams " Is there a man here that can make me feel like a woman before we die?"
A man stands, begins to walk to her, rips off his shirt and says "Here, IRON THIS"

Offensive?  Depends.  If you, like me, feel that this attempt at humor points out the ignorance of some men then, no, it's not offensive.
If however you feel that the attempt at humor was made at the expense of women then yes, it is offensive.
I don't mind the offense and put it near the commercials that make men out to be complete nincompoops when it comes to domestic life. I find those to be offensive and perpetuation of a stereotype.  That is a simple fix though.  I don't buy those products when I shop for the family.

First question: are the owners of advertising agencies and household goods manufacturers primarily male or female?
Second question: are the men made out to be complete nincompoops  overall, or complete nincompoops solely when it comes to domestic life?
"Gosh, honey, I can't help myself from breaking plates when I do the dishes, making a mess by running the blender without a lid when I make dinner, and shredding your underwear when I do laundry. I guess you'll have to do all of those chores, while I go have a fulfilling and rewarding career outside the home as well as a rich social life with my colleagues and friends."

Never forget the 4-10 rule: due to overall scarcity, a "4" at a State college is a "10" at MIT.

These seem pretty harmless to me, and I wonder if its not sexist for all the commentators to immediately assume these were pick-up lines meant to be used by men on women?  "Do you wash your clothes in Windex? "Cause I can tottaly see myself in your pants" is pretty Unisex.   Isn't sexist to assume only MEN are sexual agressors and users of cheesy pick up lines*

*well yes, of  course they ARE in the real world, but that's only because the only pick-up line needed by just about any woman who really wants to get laid is "Hi, nice to meet you, I really want to get laid"

Oh give it a farking rest, and pull the stick out of your ass.

It wasn't AT THE CONFERENCE, it was at a venue in Austin.  The VENUE provided the wrist bands, apparently without having checked with anyone from MIT.

Also, this particular conference has more than a little bit of sexualization going already... or are you too brain dead to realize that?  OH, I know, you've never been to a real conference.  Scared of crowds?

Furthermore,  WE ARE TALKING ABOUT CHEESY PICK UP LINES.  Have a bit of perspective, PICK UP LINES.  In fact, pick up lines SO BAD, they are considered JOKES by almost everyone.

Yes, if only I had someone who'd pay for my upkeep while I had all the time I wanted for my hobbies. Sure, I'd love to do chores (barely 2 hours a day) while she'd work 8 hours + commute. Then I have 5+ (Not counting the evening when I can claim that it is unfair that I have to do all the chores and blackmail her into doing the dishes and looking after the kids for a bit by withholding sex) hours left to do whatever. Even kids are only a drain on my free time for the first few years. Then they go to school for 6 to 7 hours and after that they are old enough that they'll mostly take care of themselves. Plus I can make them do some chores I dislike most. Social life with friends? While/after working 8 hours and commuting? Having 5+ hours of free time a day is the far superior option. And let us not forget about the weekends, having looked after the kids and the house for the entire week I'm entitled to some me time (with the guys).

Just commenting that the women don't have/had it quite as bad as people like to claim. Especially as it relates to the following part of the quoted comment: "I guess you'll have to do all of those chores, while I go have a fulfilling and rewarding career outside the home as well as a rich social life with my colleagues and friends."

If you can't manage the chores and a fulfilling and rich social life with all the available free time you have compared to a full work week you are doing something wrong.
