Madden = 25 years old.
Selections for Madden cover = played within the last 25 years.

I'm not sure, but I don't think that's a coincidence.

/Is Tecmo Bo eligible?

balfourk: My borther and I  are actually friends with Jake. We went to high school together. The last time we talked he mentioned that when he left Cleveland he had options with many teams as the vet back-up, but he wasn't going to do that because he felt he could still start in the NFL. It really is sad when you see a friend lose grips with reality. Both my brother and I told him that he was probably grasping at straws, but he wouldn't hear it. Jake really is a great guy and he still talks to anyone that walks up to him. He is just a good ole cajun boy at heart. He rightfully catches hell here on fark for his woeful performance in that game, but he had a good career which is more than many NFL hopeful QB's can say.

That's honestly nice to hear.

/Still voted for him.

The Muthaship: 3 49ers as #1 seeds including a guy who has started...is it 11 games in his "career"?

10. And Madden covers are typically given to players who are younger and 'exciting' over established vets. Your main market is young men and new exciting players - your ESPN fodder - is a good for targeting that audience.

From that perspective RG3 and Kaepernic are good picks despite having just over 25 games played between them.

I just went back and checked -- turns out that it tends to be mid-career players, actually.  The four youngest are Michael Vick (24), Daunte Culpepper (25), Vince Young (25), and Peyton Hillis (26).  The four oldest were Brett Favre (40), Drew Brees (33), Barry Sanders (32), and Shaun Alexander (32).  The other nine players were all between 27 and 30.

Based on how valuable RGIII cards were in MUT13, if he's not on the cover this year it would be a major upset.

His career could have been backing up Aaron Brooks (or Brees, I suppose) for ten years.  At least people outside of New Orleans know who he is now.

/That and he took a team to the Super Bowl, that's nice too.

that and it's simple math/logic that the player won't be able to have a follow up career year, or even play in every game next year.

Regression toward the mean.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regression_toward_the_mean

In statistics, regression toward (or to) the mean is the phenomenon that if a variable is extreme on its first measurement, it will tend to be closer to the average on a second measurement, and-a fact that may superficially seem paradoxical-if it is extreme on a second measurement, will tend to have been closer to the average on the first measurement. To avoid making wrong inferences, the possibility of regression toward the mean must be considered when designing experiments and interpreting experimental, survey, and other empirical data in the physical, life, behavioral and social sciences.

...

Regression to the mean in sports performance may be the reason for the "Sports Illustrated Cover Jinx" and the "Madden Curse". John Hollinger has an alternate name for the phenomenon of regression to the mean: the "fluke rule", while Bill James calls it the "Plexiglas Principle".

Because popular lore has focused on "regression toward the mean" as an account of declining performance of athletes from one season to the next, it has usually overlooked the fact that such regression can also account for improved performance. For example, if one looks at the batting average of Major League Baseball players in one season, those whose batting average was above the league mean tend to regress downward toward the mean the following year, while those whose batting average was below the mean tend to progress upward toward the mean the following year.

I heard that Madden 25 will have no AI opponents. When you boot up the game, it connects to a server and randomly picks another living player for you to play against. They were going to have an off-line training mode, but scrapped the idea for more features like counters for how many times you get dropped from the server or for games where your opponent picks New England and only runs long bomb plays.

There are some core gameplay changes too. Since most of the "action" takes place inside the 20 yard line, they've just shrank the field. For balance issues, the game will only release with eight playable teams and new teams will be released as their real world counterparts improve. The Jacksonville Jaguars are expected in 2031; seventeen years after the servers are taken off-line.

They've decided to speed up the whole process and when you purchase Madden 25 you'll get $5 off the pre-order of Madden 26. Also, as a free gift for not being able to play the game for the first two weeks of launch, EA is giving everyone a free copy of Mail Order Monsters.

This is not a popularity contest. This is Madden Curse Hot Potato. No matter how much it's being marketed as an honor and something to try to get for your team, the voters have other ideas. They don't want to curse their team and especially don't want to curse one of the biggest playmakers on their team. So they try to foist the curse on anyone else but themselves, preferably a rival or someone else they hate. The cover ultimately ends up going to a much-maligned team with a fanbase too small to fight back.

Which means the Browns (Peyton Hillis, who beat Michael Vick) and Lions (Calvin Johnson, who beat Cam Newton).

The biggest names will tend to get through the first round or two, but then Madden Curse Hot Potato starts in earnest.

I have it being dumped on the Bills this time. So C.J. Spiller's my pick to come out of that bracket.

The 'old school' half is a little more unpredictable, because retired players' stats can't drop, but the team on the cover's still probably going to be enough. The Texans are unrepresented- nobody that could work as an 'old school' player for them yet- so I'd say the Jaguars here, but Fred Taylor's got too strong a first-round opponent in Jerry Rice. So I'd go with the Rams and Marshall Faulk.

So, C.J. Spiller and Marshall Faulk would be my final... and the Rams overpower the Bills and dump the curse on them.

C.J. Spiller's your man.

Also, one of the main draws of the game is the new guys.  If I wanted to play as Tom Brady or Peyton Manning, I would just boot up Madden '05 instead of getting the newest game.

Also, I feel like they should have the East be current players while the West is historic then go from there.

I think the only Bear to make a videogame cover is Roberto Garza on the Spanish-language edition (only) of one of the Maddens, LOL.

Urlacher might've been on one of the NFL 2K games, don't remember. Not like the Bears typically have the sort of player who would be considered for this though.

2013-03-12 12:05:11 PM
I demand that if the Jake wins the cover that Madden add an option to let you read about what QB won the Jake that week.

Come on people, this is EA, I'm sure they'll hire rob for 8 bucks an hour, say they have a great new option to match the cover....but the game has been shipped. So for only 10 bucks, you can download "The Jake" DLC option post-purchase.
