I can respect Tim Brown as the Raiders 'old school' pick, but I think Rich Gannon and Kenny Stabler also have legitimate claims to have been included.  Janikowski should have gotten the nod over Carson Palmer for the current player slot.

Maybe beyond a certain year, EA doesn't have the rights to those players' likenesses? I have no idea but that's the only reason I can come up with as to why they wouldn't be there.

But you're right, Ron Rivera being there instead of Walter Payton  justseems like they're trolling us.

Walter Peyton is dead, so it would be hard to get him to grant likeness rights.

Jim Brown and EA had a bit of a legal kerfuffle back a few years ago when Brown sued EA for including his likeness in the game (they never used his name or his picture, just his uniform number and an avatar that looked like a big black guy).

My borther and I  are actually friends with Jake. We went to high school together. The last time we talked he mentioned that when he left Cleveland he had options with many teams as the vet back-up, but he wasn't going to do that because he felt he could still start in the NFL. It really is sad when you see a friend lose grips with reality. Both my brother and I told him that he was probably grasping at straws, but he wouldn't hear it. Jake really is a great guy and he still talks to anyone that walks up to him. He is just a good ole cajun boy at heart. He rightfully catches hell here on fark for his woeful performance in that game, but he had a good career which is more than many NFL hopeful QB's can say.

10. And Madden covers are typically given to players who are younger and 'exciting' over established vets. Your main market is young men and new exciting players - your ESPN fodder - is a good for targeting that audience.

From that perspective RG3 and Kaepernic are good picks despite having just over 25 games played between them.

I just went back and checked -- turns out that it tends to be mid-career players, actually.  The four youngest are Michael Vick (24), Daunte Culpepper (25), Vince Young (25), and Peyton Hillis (26).  The four oldest were Brett Favre (40), Drew Brees (33), Barry Sanders (32), and Shaun Alexander (32).  The other nine players were all between 27 and 30.

Regression toward the mean.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regression_toward_the_mean

In statistics, regression toward (or to) the mean is the phenomenon that if a variable is extreme on its first measurement, it will tend to be closer to the average on a second measurement, and-a fact that may superficially seem paradoxical-if it is extreme on a second measurement, will tend to have been closer to the average on the first measurement. To avoid making wrong inferences, the possibility of regression toward the mean must be considered when designing experiments and interpreting experimental, survey, and other empirical data in the physical, life, behavioral and social sciences.

...

Regression to the mean in sports performance may be the reason for the "Sports Illustrated Cover Jinx" and the "Madden Curse". John Hollinger has an alternate name for the phenomenon of regression to the mean: the "fluke rule", while Bill James calls it the "Plexiglas Principle".

Because popular lore has focused on "regression toward the mean" as an account of declining performance of athletes from one season to the next, it has usually overlooked the fact that such regression can also account for improved performance. For example, if one looks at the batting average of Major League Baseball players in one season, those whose batting average was above the league mean tend to regress downward toward the mean the following year, while those whose batting average was below the mean tend to progress upward toward the mean the following year.

I heard that Madden 25 will have no AI opponents. When you boot up the game, it connects to a server and randomly picks another living player for you to play against. They were going to have an off-line training mode, but scrapped the idea for more features like counters for how many times you get dropped from the server or for games where your opponent picks New England and only runs long bomb plays.

There are some core gameplay changes too. Since most of the "action" takes place inside the 20 yard line, they've just shrank the field. For balance issues, the game will only release with eight playable teams and new teams will be released as their real world counterparts improve. The Jacksonville Jaguars are expected in 2031; seventeen years after the servers are taken off-line.

They've decided to speed up the whole process and when you purchase Madden 25 you'll get $5 off the pre-order of Madden 26. Also, as a free gift for not being able to play the game for the first two weeks of launch, EA is giving everyone a free copy of Mail Order Monsters.

This is not a popularity contest. This is Madden Curse Hot Potato. No matter how much it's being marketed as an honor and something to try to get for your team, the voters have other ideas. They don't want to curse their team and especially don't want to curse one of the biggest playmakers on their team. So they try to foist the curse on anyone else but themselves, preferably a rival or someone else they hate. The cover ultimately ends up going to a much-maligned team with a fanbase too small to fight back.

Which means the Browns (Peyton Hillis, who beat Michael Vick) and Lions (Calvin Johnson, who beat Cam Newton).

The biggest names will tend to get through the first round or two, but then Madden Curse Hot Potato starts in earnest.

I have it being dumped on the Bills this time. So C.J. Spiller's my pick to come out of that bracket.

The 'old school' half is a little more unpredictable, because retired players' stats can't drop, but the team on the cover's still probably going to be enough. The Texans are unrepresented- nobody that could work as an 'old school' player for them yet- so I'd say the Jaguars here, but Fred Taylor's got too strong a first-round opponent in Jerry Rice. So I'd go with the Rams and Marshall Faulk.

So, C.J. Spiller and Marshall Faulk would be my final... and the Rams overpower the Bills and dump the curse on them.

C.J. Spiller's your man.

Also, one of the main draws of the game is the new guys.  If I wanted to play as Tom Brady or Peyton Manning, I would just boot up Madden '05 instead of getting the newest game.

Also, I feel like they should have the East be current players while the West is historic then go from there.

I demand that if the Jake wins the cover that Madden add an option to let you read about what QB won the Jake that week.

Come on people, this is EA, I'm sure they'll hire rob for 8 bucks an hour, say they have a great new option to match the cover....but the game has been shipped. So for only 10 bucks, you can download "The Jake" DLC option post-purchase.

No shiat. They have a bunch of rookies or second year guys but leave off guys like Bruce Smith, Emit Smith, Ronnie Lott etc.. And they put Jake Delhomme on there yet leave off Dan Marino? That farking list fails hard

Walter Payton is one of my favorite players of all time, but I don't think he'd stand a chance against Barry Sanders in a national poll. Of course, if it was Walter on the ballot, he probably wouldn't be the #14 seed.

Unplayable? How so? When you put the disc in, does it not let you play the game?

It's repetitive. They seem to add and remove features for no reason. There is rarely an advancement in the game other than graphics. Most years are simply a roster update.

I don't buy them when they come out because I don't really like them but I do occasionally buy one when I find one in the bargain bin.

But it's not "unplayable".

That but...did they really throw out the fantasy draft on last year's edition?  That was the most fun part of any Madden game for me in the last decade.

I thought this year was an improvement in game play. Movements seem much more fluid and sensitive, and your passing game definitely sees a lot more pick-offs, so you have to be more selective with it. I like the new physics engine, but I DO foresee that Madden '14 is going to be the same exact thing.

So I skipped 13, and I think I'll pick up 25.  The only thing I don't like about that is how they keep the price up until the next version comes out.  Maybe I'll get my sports fix playing last year's NCAA then.

Hell if I know. Like I said they seem to add and remove features randomly. It wouldn't surprise me at all. I think the last version I bought (07) had a Create-A-Player where you made a player based on the characteristics of your parents, and you got some hilarious combinations like, "Truck Driver father, Magician Mother" and got some truly bizarre character stats. You'd have to sit there and "roll" for good parents. Then, poof, it was gone. I've never heard of them using it again.

That game was also notable because they neglected to include AI behavior for if you took a man off the line and positioned him off to the side on punts. Every punt was a 20 yard loss and turnover on downs once you figured that out.

Back in the day it was "buy it the year after my team was really really good so the developers will have figured it out, then never play online and don't let it update when we suck again."

Now I don't think I can keep it from updating. :/

I've brought out this example a few times before, but it really has lasted me a while. One night in the middle of a game,  Marty B is running a route in the endzone. Don't recall which one. Doesn't really matter, because Tony drills him in the numbers. Ball bounces right off his chest incomplete. Marty turns to Tony and says, "Throw it up higher." Everyone watching sort of just stared. Seriously? Not that we were surprised the guy who seemed more interested in basketball demanded to receive the ball at the height of his jump, but if you get hit in the chest you'd better grab it. It's not like they brought him in to fill in for Jason Witten if he was hurt - the idea was that the impeccable route-runner and long time veteran would pair well with the athletic young player who could go up and get the ball - even if he was a little "Raw". He just wasn't there, and when he didn't get the ball he was upset.

Combine that with the moments of questionable decision making like his internet show, where he did the "Black Olympics" and had a fried chicken, kool aid, and watermelon eating contest. Or when he tried to throw Tony Romo under the bus saying that Kitna should get a shot at starting because Kitna played while Tony was injured. It wasn't hard to write him off.

The Giants apparently didn't think it was worth keeping him, or else they would have kept him. I have no idea what the Bears offered, but if they think he's going to stay motivated in an offense that throws less to the TE than any other team, they're mistaken.

Who knows, I could be wrong. Maybe he goes there and thrives. But I doubt it.

Can someone explain to me why Justin Blackmon was chosen as the Jaguars' representative? I know he was their most recent first round pick, but he was probably their 3rd best receiver last year (definitely behind Shorts, arguably also behind Mercedes Lewis). And why not Maurice Jones-Drew. You could argue that he could be leaving, but Dez Bryant already left for Cleveland, and he's Dallas' rep. Paul Pozlusny is really good. Their center was a guy who was arguably pro-bowl caliber. Hell, Josh Scobee would make more sense to me as a Madden cover guy than Justin Blackmon.

meanmutton:I just went back and checked -- turns out that it tends to be mid-career players, actually.

That's a horrific list of "young" players. Hillis and Young flamed out almost immediately after. Vick did the dog-killer thing. Arguably, the guy who had the best career out of them is Culpepper. You know, the guy who was cut by the Lions, Raiders and Dolphins.

Fair enough. He didn't show his diva (and weird stereotype whatever the fark you call that) side on the field in ny. Although it looks as though the giants are taking a hacksaw to their offense. Bradshaw is cut, tender in Cruz, nicks is seeking offers and now Bennett's gone. Guessing they have to make room for Eli's contract

Oops first round tender ON Cruz

If you watched many Bears games last year, you'd know that they could have brought Mike Ditka out of retirement to line up at TE, and he would have had a better season than the Bears current TEs. All three combined for something in the neighborhood of 33 catches, 350 yds, and 4 TDs. THREE GUYS combined for that. That is a very bad year for a typical TE. Kellen Davis dropped more balls than a second grade boys school classroom. And if he did manage to catch the ball while wide open, the turf monster would undoubtedly get him and he'd instantly fall down with no defenders within 5 yards of him.

/Kellen Davis is unfit to even be the beer vendor at Bears games
//even if MB half-asses it next season, he'll be miles better than Kellen Davis

I voted for the one I would like to see injured in each of them.

As long as you want a guy who can show up half the time and still produce, you'll be fine.

Unfortunately in Dallas he was being compared to Jason Witten, who shows up all the time.

Also, I hope you have enough Captain Crunch, because Marty eats a whole bunch.

Good assessment of KD.  I'll be pissed if he is on the team next year.  I was pissed he was on the team last year.  Worst pro TE I've ever seen.

I'm going to assume that my 32-for-32 score was the result of voting thirty-two times and not being perfect.

Because that would be stupid.

Frederick: Thanks for the link, Subby.  That was neat. But who ever put together the "Old School" selection is apparently 25 years old.  How does Jim Brown or Walter Payton -two of the most iconic players get left off?

It's Madden 25. As in 25 years. Players who retired before 1988 aren't eligible.

Old school is Sammy Baugh.  4 TD passes and 4 INT's in the SAME GAME.  That's old school.
