FTFA: To fix this problem, Griffin has introduced a bill to Congress that would scale back the cell phone program by providing only landline services to low-income citizens.

Will it be cheaper to provide landlines to dead people? What would the installation charges be?

Rep. Tim Griffin: Where do we draw the line? Do we give everybody an iPad next? A computer? Is that the role the federal government should be playing?

I guess that would depend on whether or not they are needed to contact emergency services, help with job searches, and keep in contact with family.

Hey, Rep. Griffin, can we talk about reforming the Pentagon's procurement process, which wastes billions of dollars every year, and has a negative effect on the quality of arms and equipment produced for United States soldiers to the benefit of congressional representatives?  Hello?  Is this thing on?

/I guess you're right, Rep. Griffin.  Poor people with phones IS the biggest problem with the federal budget.  Well, next to PBS.

That's what a Republican congressman says. What's obvious is that companies are sending out the phones and then billing the government. This would be fraud. But Republican congressmen don't see companies taking advantage -they see big gubbamint'.

Just remember stories like this the next time you see a Fark headline like these:  You all laughed, said it wasn't gonna have any effect, gonna have any sort of impact on normals. Well you were wrong, because those of us outside of D.C. are starting to feel this sequestration thing

And just remember that instead of cutting the 'Cell phones for dead people' program, programs that are impacting alive people are being cut.

And how would the companies in question have any idea who to send a phone out to?

Someone Has to make the request. It's more likely people making random requests to prove how important the program is so they can keep/expand it.

2013-03-12 08:48:21 AM
Of course, properly funding the government to the point where the database could be kept up to date and cull out these errors is a little too complex rather than just scrapping the whole program and giving the profits to rich people as tax cuts, right?

If you derpsters want poor people to work, you'll need to accept that cell phones are a necessity, not a luxury. Not only must a person be reachable, many employers actually want employees who can use a smart phone. My husband's job interview included the question "do you have a smart phone?" If he'd said no, he would not have gotten the job.

I have been said to lean slightly to the right. I never had a problem with the cell phone program. It sounds crazy at first but when you think about it the whole thing makes sense. I get sick of trying to explain that its no longer 1985 and the cell phone is not a luxury item anymore.

If unemployed people (particularly blah ones) got jobs, who would they get to feel automatically superior to? They want to rail on them for not having jobs, they don't want them to actually get jobs, so assistance in getting jobs is bad.

A basic cell with a basic prepaid plan would be cheaper than a landline wouldn't it ? It's not like they're getting iphone 5's. Although you do need to charge a cell. I wonder how much it cost to charge a cell per month.

No, telephones (land lines) for low income families started under Reagan. This article is about cell phones. How many people had a cell phone in 1987? Please try your call again.

The cell phone program is supposed to be one per household. Landlines ensure that is the case.

If we're not going to get rid of Bushphones, then tinkering with the program is going to just waste more money.

So no personal bias here.

The victimized citizenry need to stop claiming this "no longer a luxury" thing. "New cars are no longer a luxury, computers are no longer a luxury, homes larger than my needs are no longer a luxury, dishwashers are no longer a luxury etc..." It's called living within your means. Outside of food, water, clothing and livable shelter many things ARE a luxury no one should feel entitled to unless they can reasonably afford them. We should just be thankful we live in a part of the world where our health and well-being, our education and other important things are seen as essential. We should not be whining that the government owes us a free phone or else we can't work.

Cell phones are basically what poor people world wide use for communication because they are so much cheaper than landlines. Hell, Nokia just introduced a new model that is $25. Not $25 after contract, but $25 by itself.

Cell phones with reasonable pre-paid plans are MUCH cheaper than landlines and are used all over the world by people who can't get landline service.  A program to provide those who can't afford phones (or who would be deciding each month whether to pay for groceries or pay Ma Bell her pound of flesh) seems like a very good idea for reasons others have already stated.  Nothing wrong with the idea, sounds like the implementation needs to be revamped...but hell just throw it all away right?

/only bothering with the landline because of the DSL anyway, might go dry DSL now that it is available
//already told Ma Bell and the cable company to suck it
