I met Lil Bub a few months back at the local shelter.  She really didn't seem to care about the room full of people petting her, she was just interested in her bowl of gooshy food.

It's down to the owner to figure out how the individual animal feels about it.  I've had cats that loved to travel and cats that hated it, cats that adored strangers and cats that hid from them.  If your animal seems fine with it, it's probably fine.  If it's obviously distressed, don't farking do it.

How could GC's handlers tell if she liked meeting thousands of random, possibly smelly people all fondling her and going kittykittykittykittykitty?

For that matter, how could they tell if she liked anything?

DarkVader: anyone whining about it needs to STFU and GTFO.

Here's a clue: Cats have teeth, and claws. The are adept at communicating displeasure.

They should charge $5 a pop to poke it in the eye with a chopstick

This I know well. My late kitty and I used to play a game called "Let's Bite and Claw The Pestering Hu-Man." However, you could definitely tell happy kitty from merely placid and unperturbed kitty.

They vibrate when they're happy.

Meh. There are cats and there are cats. We have two cats right now. One is shy... in the ridiculous. If the doorbell rings she is under the bed like a shot. She is terrified of strangers and spooks easily even when it's just us. The other cat is outgoing as hell. My wife has taken her across the country on vacations just because she could, and the cats loves it. She likes to be mobbed be strangers, even children.

TL;DR version: if the cat is ok with it, fine.
