Oh, so if it was a Republican politician that got the conviction the Farklibs would be all giddy, going on and on about the supposed typical Republican behavior, but since "Democrat' is mentioned, it's derp.

And then I remembered- in Farkland, Democrats are holier than thou, have never done a damn thing wrong in their lives, and are 100% truthful and on the up and up at all times, while Republicans are all corrupt, scum of the earth closet homophobic homosexual liars who all need to die in a fire.

So basically my first sentence was a waste of time.

I dont know bout you folks, but I am starting to think that deploying the National Guard may be necessary to help get Detroit back on its feet.

Oh goody...we've reached the delusional and stupid "I can out hyperbole you" part of any "FARK Detroit thread."

For example, could you have had a 10,000 person 5K run in downtown Baghdad like was held in Detroit (Corktown) yesterday?  No, then STFU, you are an idiot.

Next will come the "it's because of racism" part of the thread...then followed by 500 memes and "nuke it from orbit" comments, then the next days' news.

Rinse and repeat FARK, rinse and repeat.

To be fair, letting the National Guard practice various things (ending with demolition) in some of the abandoned areas would probably help.  They get urban warfare practice, the city gets rid of some of it's crack houses.

I think you mean they'd get practice in how to take bribes to blow up the house next door instead of the crack house.

No, there'd be a way to clean the place up, but the politicians will never allow it.

/no point in even discussing what it would be...the place has been a shiathole for decades and will continue to get worse

Typical corrupt scumbag democrat. Almost every presidential scandal happens in the second term. Obama, from the Chicago school of corruption, is next. And no matter what he eventually gets caught for, the fark liberals will be there to bend over and take one for the team, right in the cornhole.

"I wouldn't call it anger," she said. "More disappointment with me voting for the mayor twice. I thought that he could be a good leader, and sitting here on trial for the past six months I saw a lot that really, really turned my stomach and I couldn't believe these things were going on."

Following is an excellent anecdote from a Detroit columnist that encapsulates what Kwame Kilpatrick was all about:

The last time I talked with Kwame Kilpatrick was just a short while before he stepped down as mayor of Detroit. I'd come to his office to sit in on a meeting of education reformers who were hoping he'd help them accelerate the opening of charter schools in the city.

Everyone at the table knew the clock was ticking on Kilpatrick. The lurid text messages between him and Christine Beatty were opening door after door into his sordid dealings, and that brought an awkwardness to the session. No one asked about his troubles, and he didn't mention them.

What he did do was warm to the immediate task. Within just a few minutes he was in command of the meeting, tossing out suggestions, outlining plans, shaping a vision that charged the room with energy.

It was nuts. We all knew that Kilpatrick wouldn't be around to bring any of this to fruition, and yet he had us believing. That ability to sell an idea, to sell Kwame Kilpatrick, really, never failed to amaze me.

He was waiting in the hallway as I walked out, and pulled me aside, out of earshot of the others.

'Look," he said. "I know everyone wants me to resign. I want to go. I'm done with this. But I've got to be able to take care of my family. Could you talk to the business guys and see if they can put together some walking away money?"

That was Kwame Kilpatrick in a nutshell: Natural born leader, natural born con man. A man who could one minute thrill an audience with the rich future he painted of his city, and the next be angling how to cut himself in on a payoff.

What can they expect? They announced the verdict at like 10AM. Folks were just getting out of bed.

dickfreckle: We're working on locking up the former mayor of New Orleans (Nagin), so I'm getting a kick...

How screwed up was that with Heebe? They toss out Letten and the crooks get away. I don't have any hope for a Nagin conviction if they can't get Heebe. With Heebe you had a list of folks with the bribe amount in his office and that investigation gets dropped.

No hope.

The whole Letten thing confused me. All I know is that the man left with class while his accusers looked like assholes. For the record, I'm a raging libtard (for those watching at home, he's a Republican). But if that man came gunning for you, your time was up. And he did it by the book. That he had to resign over some bullsh*t someone in his office said still makes no sense to me.

Letten was essentially the Indiana Jones of prosecuting NOLA scum. I was sad to see him go. Now we'll watch Nagin get a free pass.

hasty ambush: "disturbing tendency of black electorates to not elect the smartest and brightest, or even the cleverest."

Electorates in the crappier parts of Africa are well known for preferring the "Big Man" over someone honest, intelligent or well-intentioned. "He'll do, he's got a Mercedes" seems to be standard political thinking there.

2013-03-11 04:58:56 PM
Not only should Kwame go to prison for 40 years, but his family should be charged as accessories and sent up the river, too. They ALL knew what was up. They ALL benefited from the crimes being committed. Not a single one of them lifted a finger to stop it, since that would end the gravy train.

Say what you will about former Mayor Archer, but at least he wasn't a pimp who sold out his city and ethics in exchange for bling for himself and his family.

And to the Republicans/Conservatives who are saying liberals defend Kilpatrick: You're dead wrong. Pretty much all of Michigan's liberals hated him in office. We all knew he was slime, and we all wanted to see him brought down because he gave us a bad name, because he was a crook, and because he didn't live by liberal (or even honest) values and ethics. He was a bad guy who got into position in a bad city (Yes, Detroit is bad. It sucks. I'm glad I left.) and did bad things. He was impressive only to other bad people.

And another thing: Detroit politics are largely corrupt. Party affiliation means NOTHING in Detroit. To be "electable" there, you pretty much have to declare yourself a Democrat, but that doesn't mean the people who get into political office in Detroit are actual Democrats. For the most part, they're self-serving slimeballs, hood, crooks, and con artists who have the city in a choke-hold. If the public swayed toward electing Republicans, you can bet every one of those folks would switch party affiliation faster than you can say, "Kwame, who you textin'?"

In Detroit there are no real political parties. There are just the people who know what to say (or who to bribe) to get elected, and the people who don't. If there's an honest person in the high offices of Detroit's government, I'd be shocked by their existence.

i113.photobucket.com

I remember the city getting better during Archer (he preceded Kwame).  Not really quickly, but hell, we didn't have to worry about my grandmas during Devil's Night.  Their neighborhoods were looking better than I'd ever seen them in my granted not that long life.  I had friends moving *into* Detroit and commuting to work because if you were young and spent your time on a passion (non-profit work, art, music) that's just where everyone started heading.  Space to spread out, cheap rent, slowly improving as a whole...sure, once you had your family you were gonna move to the suburbs but you'd still keep your eye on the city and maybe move back in if things kept progressing.

And then Kwame, motherf--ker.  IIRC, the Metro Times (you know, the horribly liberal alternative weekly) endorsed his opponent the first time around, then threw up their hands and endorsed a Republican the second time.

I gotta read the charges more closely... maybe 4 years ago now I had a biatch-session about him with someone who had several friends in the Detroit Police.  Some of the "are you effing kidding me... goddammit, it's probably true" stuff he said is what actually eventually led to these charges.  I wonder if the other stuff he said got uncovered too...

I love how they mention social contract. They're pulling that in Detroit saying that the state taking over the city's finances is a violation of the social contract. As if it's a power word that can be wielded by anyone in justification of anything. Cities leaving Atlanta's bad gov't... Social contract! Localities must yield control to the larger group! Detroit gets taken over by the state... Social contract!  The larger group can't control the locality!!!

It hurts me, as a reasonably good Repub to mention two other Detroit mayors, Dennis Archer and Dave Bing. But ...

both of these men are honorable. Archer was pres of the Bar Association (the legal one) and did some cleaning up of the city. Former Piston Bing is also doing his best in a horrid situation.

Fair and balanced.

Grrrrrrrrr.  The sad thing is this will do nothing to stop the pay for play attitude among the rest of the elected officials in Wayne county or the blatant us-vs-them racism from the south side of 8 mile.  Detroit is a city designed for 1.8 million but populated with less than 700,000 who all would rather cut off their nose to spite their face.

/fark that guy right in his cornhole.
//but it's foolish to think corruption in the area ended today

CSB: I met an AT&T tech who worked in the city. They had one of their larger aerial cables cut down and sold for scrap. The cable was behind an apartment complex and it took them a day and a half to get the new one in there and replaced. When they were done they went back to the office to sign out for the day.  As soon as they got back in, their supervisor sent them back out to check on it because reports of outages were coming back in. Yup... someone stole the brand new cable they just put up.

He was tired of working in Michigan and particularly Detroit and asked me a lot about Southeast Louisiana. He liked the time he spent down here and wanted to get as far away as he could from Detroit despite having lived there all his life. Parts of New Orleans are bad... but they're nothing like what I see and here out of Detroit. At least our abandoned neighborhoods have a reason.

Excellent choice of photo. I can't hear your corruption scandal over the sound of how awesome Astronaut John Glenn is.

98K514: And we all know, if given the chance, Detroiters would re-elect him in a heartbeat.

You know it.
