Fortuneteller April Stevens
Kenner detectives arrested Stevens, 20, of Harahan, and booked her with theft of $1,500 or more, according to arrest reports. She is accused of never returning the money to the victim after she "cleansed" it, said Sgt. Brian McGregor, spokesman for the Kenner Police Department.

I guess she didn't see that arrest coming

McGregor said some fortunetellers exploit others who have turmoil in their lives. are stupid.

If you want to know whether or not someone who claims to be psychic is telling the truth or just trying to scam you, there is a simple way to do so.

Ask them "do you actually have psychic powers?"  If they say "no," they are telling the truth.  If they say "yes," they are lying.  It's that easy.

Not necessarily.

If they answer "yes", they may not be lying. They may siimply be crazy.

Well. She's no longer cursed with holding on to $10k.

If we are allowed to bid, I will cleanse her cash for $9,999. She saves a dollar.

I have been the recipient of numerous curses

/none of them involved my holding on to money
//well, perhaps my inability to do so...

Well, she doesn't have a curse anymore.  Granted, she didn't have a curse to begin with, but hey, if she thinks she's better off then maybe she didn't really need the money.

Point taken.  Some people claim to have psychic powers because they are dishonest con artists.  Others claim to have psychic powers because they are loony.

And then you wouldn't even have to report the transaction to the IRS.

I think a good bright line rule to distinguish crazy from con artist is whether they are asking you for money while claiming psychic powers.

So fleecing the dumb and superstitious of money is a crime now? Someone better tell the church.

Damn right I'm edgy.

Do people still fall for this bullshiat?

I'd rather get rid of the curse by myself, spending it.

So.... this person basically acted exactly like Scientology, but because she is a "psychic" and not a "religion" it's illegal. Got it.

2013-03-11 01:53:32 PM
Using the cover of being a "psychic" if you're a grifter b/c the potential victims who seek you out are already dumb, desperate and gullible. I think only Sarah Palin has it easier.

This happened to me when I was much younger and naive. I was experiencing a difficult time in my life and decided to seek out a psychic to see if she could tell me if everything would turn out OK. Big mistake!! She took 70 bucks for the reading then told me my whole family including me were cursed. She wanted 1500 dollars to buy materials for a ritual to be done in a church. This included candles, and some expensive holy water imported from the vatican or some garbage. I didnt even have 1500 dollars to my name at that time so I didnt give her anything. She went on to warn me this was the only way things would ever be OK for me (and my family). I left believing her and thought I was cursed for a while after until I smartened up and realized she was just trying to rip me off. Its also against my religious beliefs to go to a psychic or read horoscopes etc. which I didnt know until my grandmother told me. I hope that woman gets maximum punishment for this. These people should not be allowed to even have these so called "businesses".

So you're perfectly fine with superstitious nonsense and the supernatural as long as it's the properly approved version?

You didn't know it was against your religious beliefs until your grandmother told you so? Is this some new clever type of troll meme I'm unfamiliar with?

Then it really wasn't against your beliefs, now was it?

You were told it wasn't.  Someone told you what to believe.  In this case, probably something smart, but still, if you didn't believe in it, you didn't believe in it.  If you did, you did.

You did, then somebody told you not to, and then you didn't.

Bob: What the f*ck, man? Why are you blowing that whistle?
Joe: It's an elephant whistle, man. It keeps the elephants away.
Bob: Uh, what?
Joe: I have to blow this whistle, otherwise, you know, elephants.
Bob: But...this is Ohio. There aren't any elephants around here.

Given your handle, I guess this can be an unsnarky question. How many internet atheists do you suppose are actual independent thinkers, and how many are as uncritically accepting of what they hear/read as any other person who is superstitious or religious?

I was going to post this exact same quote. It was the funniest thing I'd ever read on Fark. I wish I'd favorited the poster.
