So.... A real dotcom style tech bubble focused on robotics? This could be a fun economic bubble that does to factories what websites did to newspapers. And when it bursts we might come out okay, because we'll all have 3D printers hacked with open source software and designs.

I want one of those form 1s. Bad.

If only it cost about half as much...

Proud Solidoodle 2 owner, here.

During Christmas when my nephew got a new K'nex set, and one of the little red connectors was broken in the packaging, instead of waiting until the day after, or waiting in a line to get it exchanged, I was able to print the same piece in red. Took about 20 minutes with SketchUp to design. It may not have had the exact same appearance due to extrusion 'layering', but it worked and the kiddo was immediately happy.

I can understand why some people think it is just another gadget, but the technology has real potential, though I have my doubts that every home will have one, I think eventually they'll be considerably more common. In the mean time it is nice to have extra income since I'm one of the few people in my city with one.

Lots of progress has been made in the DIY area with stereolithoghpy resin machines. If you're the hobby type you can probably build one for about half the ~$2300 that Formlabs seems to imply their machine will cost... if interested I can try to contact the guy that was working on it and get details. (Most expensive bit is the DLP projector...)

I can't stand the phrase "science fact instead of science fiction." I know journalists use it in these tech fluff pieces because it sounds catchy, but it's just so farking stupid...
