great.  now he can kill him off again for even more dramatic effect.

Glad he will be back, I liked the character.

But as far as killing him off again, I don't think it will have quite the dramatic impact. For one thing, I doubt Stark and Rogers would believe it unless they are there to see him die. While Fury might have believed that Coulson was actually dead and the medical team was able to revive him after Fury walked away, he still burned a good bit of trust in playing bloody cards.

Okay, so I missed all of the post-Avengers threads because I saw it in theatres a few weeks after it was released. But what were some of the theories flying around surrounding Coulson? So, RDJ looks wistfully at a blood-smeared air vent, and then? Were there any hints/clues etc after that?

I think the theories were:
The Coulson who died was an LMD
Coulson will return as Vision

Earlier in the movie Stark name checked the Life Model Decoy, so it could have been one of those instead of the real him.

Wow, you just blew my mind.  You mean to tell me that Ironman and Thor don't really exist?  That these cameramen don't risk their lives being that close to such high powered individuals?   HOLY shiat.

Oh they can up the ante in killing him, riddled with bullets, stabbed, pushed off an overpass and run over by a steamroller.

That will be his Skull duplicate.

Skrull, Skull duplicate would be if Coulson was cloned and then given Red Skull's brain or something.

Damn I hate autocorrect. They could have an arc where he's a brain in a jar or uploaded to a robot body, though that probably wouldn't go over well with the movie going comic book fans.

He could have a previously unknown identical cousin who was in the wrong place at the wrong time, but that's more into soap opera territory.

Death doesn't slow anyone down in comic book land. Unless, for some reason, IT'S YOUR TIME. In that case, not the mightiest wizards and gods in the multiverse can help you.

Back to the thread, I'd lean towards Ultron as an explanation. Perhaps it's time to bring in Hank Pym.

I don't know what any of that is, but I just wanted to add that they do have 2-3 movies before the next avengers where they could work details in.

Hank Pym: scientist, known for a long time for slapping his wife once while mentally disturbed, has gone by a few code names.

Ultron: robot built by Hank Pym, bent on destroying humanity, creator of Vision

Maybe the simplest way to go. Fury is a lying liar who lies. Coulson was hurt, but never killed in the first place.

BTW I realized my post contradicted itself and what I meant was putting him in a robot body, THEN bringing him back as a human.

Actually the only thing that seems to make death permanent in the comic world is if that death is essential to the origin of a character (i.e. Uncle Ben or the Waynes).

I'm still sticking with the LMD theory; Stark references their existence earlier in the movie, and there's a large enough gap in time when Coulson gets the BFG from the armory where he could have just as easily got an LMD to do it for him.

look newbie, we realize it's fiction.  We're discussing the fictional world.

I said this after seeing the movie the first time.  Fury lied about the trading cards, and he lied about the death, to inspire and piss off the heroes.

That's how I figured it. You see, our friend here was only MOSTLY dead. And there's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead.

Wasn't there blood?  Lots of blood?  And a gaping chest wound?  A chest would that showed decent amount of spear protruding from a rear-entry (doubly penetrating remember, 2 tips on it)?  I subscribe to the Coulson Lives theory, but damn there had to be serious medical mojo, or a facepalming-ly poor aim on that stab.

There's got to be something in the Marvel universe that could heal and repair that kind of wound while he was on life support. Some kind of derivative of super soldier serum? A transfusion from Cap? It just seems that the LMD & Vision refs are red herrings. It's the sort of thing big-scope storytellers do.

There were on an invisible flying aircraft carrier, full of scientists and superheroes.  I imagine they had some pretty decent doctors or instant-miracles in a bubbling, neon-lit apparatus.
