So they're going to let their readers write and publish their own stories now. Are they also going to share ad review from the stories the better authors publish? Or is this just a way for them to get free content and get users to spam their stories in an attempt to get more ad impressions.

Well it's a little better than the current gawker design. I have to manually enter blog.gawkers.com (or whatever) to read these sites because the default view is so god awful.

At least with this design the blog view is front and center

It's a different kind of suck, but it still sucks.

2013-03-11 11:11:08 AM
Damn site now is constantly re-loading the main page every second or two and bouncing me back to the top. What the hell?

2013-03-11 11:11:37 AM
On the surface, this seems like a step in the right direction (more scrollingly-blog-like, like it used to be). This prompts me to believe they aren't done screwing with it yet, because it's still too readable.

They will continue to screw around with that site until I can't stand to even try to read it anymore. I doubt they'll be satisfied with less.

That sounded pretentious until I thought about it for a second. Then I remembered how bad all their articles suck, which is why I used ABP+ to block their badge images from loading. So I guess I am guilty of that as well. HuffPo too. And Cracked. And Slate. Now that I take a look at it, I don't click on most of the article links here anymore.

Well thanks for checking in with that update Mike, everyone was very concerned.

Can we get every Farker to give a Go/No Go status update on their "Gawker/subsidiary" link clicking?

Put me into camp "fark no."

Well, at least it doesn't make me all stabby about requiring a NoScript whitelisting because of stupid scripting on the site

Something - either my Adblock, my Noscript, or my AVS is blocking that site.
I'll take the hint.

I don't go to gawker sites either.

2013-03-11 12:41:42 PM
I don't even remember what the other one looked like, but this one blows ass.
Seriously what happened, Internet? Websites were improving nicely, but now it seems people have taken "streamlined" to a retarded level. When your re-design is confusing and annoying, you've failed.

Look at Engadget.
They used to have a great site. Easy to read, clear, etc. The mobile one was fast, great, etc. Then they "re-designed", and stories mesh into one another, you've got this ugly ass "older stories" arrow on the bottom.

Back to iO9, why are they following youtube's lead and putting the title of an article UNDER the picture? In what f*cking universe is that easier to read? For centuries we've had the title as the TITLE. It's called a TITLE for a reason. Why is it under the picture now? And the picture is too large to see all in one scree, so you scroll like 3 times past this huge picture, and oh now there's the title. Ok well let's scroll back up I guess to now look at the picture with a bit of f*cking context.

F*cking youtube, same sh*t. Yeah after almost a decade of the title at the top, let's just move it to the f*cking bottom for no reason other than "new design!!!". It makes me bang my head in confusion as to why Android is so popular, and gmail, etc. It's just all so... counter-intuitive. The complete and utter opposite of what comes natural as a UI or layout.

Figure it out, dumbasses.

If affects you a lot. If they are staring a user contribution blog program and it becomes popular you'll have a lot less content to read. People who otherwise would have started a wordpress site to talk about things they like might just make a io9, lifehacker, etc one instead.

Me too. "Redesign" the content of that shiatty site and I might visit.

I'm pretty sure this is a joke. They clearly have a goal of my not being able to use their page, and this has almost made it usable again. I think they're just stringing us along so they can pull the rug back out from under us.

Oh, you mean if they make a TotalGawker program? Puh-leeez.... Even if they do, and it does become popular, that only means that I will have a lot less crappy content that I wouldn't want to read anyway to read. People who think the Gawker sites are worthwhile enough to contribute their ramblings to have nothing to say that I would find a great loss should I miss it. Popularity does not equal high-quality, and in fact it is usually indicative of the opposite.

In before NoScripters complain about a site they can't/won't/never read anywa...dammit!

It's only a half-step to the left of Gawker's current, unusable web shiat design, so I'll continue staying away from all their wretched sites.

And the tabletification of the internet continues. As a corollary, information density decreases while picture books for the illiterate expand.

"Yesterday, you were a reader and a commenter. Today, you can use a new platform we call Kinja to become a writer and publisher."

In other words, any asshole on the web can write as well as their staff, and some of them will do it for free.

They farked with Jalopnik a month or so ago and the page views PLUMMETED. They should just put it back or change it again or something.

Same. I have a tumblr already. (Yeah, I've got one.) I go to io9 because it's a magazine type site like Wired and not a social media/user creator content site like tumblr. The only thing I want to do on io9 is read. I don't want another hobby. Especially a hobby that I did not ask for.

2013-03-12 01:56:22 AM
looks alright, but since they kept the Kinja commenting system, they can fark right off.

2013-03-12 03:22:38 AM
In the last major Gawker redesign, I told myself I was just adjusting to the change and I'd get over it eventually.

I never did. And now they've somehow found a way to make it even worse. I hope this doesn't spread to Kotaku and Gizmodo.

2013-03-12 08:02:05 AM

XMark: I hope this doesn't spread to Kotaku

I don't think Kotaku would stand for it. There'd be an uprising and a revolt....

...then again, they'd probably just all go to reddit or IGN.

I haven't heard that in a while subby.
