Apparently quite a bit more overlap between the Xbox Live set and WBC viewership than I would have anticipated.

Yeah THIS.  I'm all for greenlit stories about stuff like this, but there's nothing there to see or get all pissed off about.  Just a screencap of ESPN showing the game.  WTF?

Deadspin has been wallowing in its mediocrity since they removed the commenter application firewall.  You originally had to contact Leitch or Sussman and provide some modicum of breaking news or inside information to get approved to comment.  Go back and look at the comment sections from 2006-07; they're absolutely hilarious...

...Oh, wait.  It looks like those comments are gone forever.

Welp, time to reminisce on the Wayback Machine.

I expect this to be blamed upon the new format.

Just because the racist people aren't smart enough to properly identify the people they're hating doesn't make it not racist.

I love when light-skinned Hispanics, who earn, on average, significantly more than their darker peers and enjoy the benefits of affirmative action programs in the US designed expressly to remedy the oppression that they themselves benefited from, whine about racism.

Exactly.

Between this, the Mexican soccer on ESPNNews, and the various women's basketball crapfests on ESPN2, ESPN really hated the white male last night.

(praise Allah for hockey on NBCSN)

This is America. Why is ESPN broadcasting the world baseball classic in Mexican? Show it in English! - Jacob Keller (@JKeller_FSU) March 10, 2013

Hmmm, I don't know. Why don't these people learn 'Murcan like the rest of the "world"?

2013-03-11 12:42:22 PM
I doubt it; remember, baseball is a thinking man's game. Baseball fans are all just smarter than the rest of us.

Why do they keep saying "Mexican?" Are they that dumb or just that horribly racist? It's clearly a game a between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. They can't understand why a game between those two teams might be in Spanish? And seriously, calling Spanish "Mexican" bothers me more than their use of "spic."

bhcompy: It's not racist.  Spanish-speaking isn't a race. Hell, Latino isn't a race.

The word "racist" has been used as a substitute for the more accurate term "bigoted" for a while now. Same thing with "prejudiced".

Racist: "X is inferior to Y"
Bigoted: "I hate X"
Prejudiced: "That person there is a member of X, and therefore will have specific attributes that all members of X possess".

2013-03-11 01:38:37 PM
On the other hand, there's apparently "Mexican" versions of the AT&T commercials with the kid focus group.

And Santiago Casilla has some nasty stuff. Made two guys look silly in the 8th with his slider, even when it was hanging over the plate.

So people who have poor understanding of the English language and use it to criticize others are superior to people that just criticize others?  Sounds racist!

I'm particularly a fan of the guy who follows up calling Spanish "Mexican" by butchering some German.

I would be confused why the main flagship ESPN channel was broadcasting in Spanish as opposed to putting the broadcast on ESPN Desportes. It is a little disingenuous to act like a channel broadcasting in Spanish, that traditionally broadcasts in English, would be expected behavior.

Please note, I am in no way defending the tweets listed in the link, just saying that ESPN broadcasting in Spanish is not something I would ever expect.

I am more astounded that ESPN apparently had absolutely nothing else to air that they did this to exploit a loophole in their rights package to fill time.

This. I put on ESPNHD last night to catch some of the game and had a hard time understanding why it was being broadcast in Spanish. I decided to check one of the other five million ESPN channels Verizon provides and found the English broadcast. Voila, problem solved.

However, I think that it should have been broadcast on the Spanish language channel, not regular ESPNHD. Doesn't make any sense.

I believe they will have excellent ratings on it when the numbers come out. Do not underestimate how many people in the U.S. have interest in Latin American baseball and are basic cable subscribers.

The game wasn't on ESPN in English. It was on MLB Network. That is why ESPN had to broadcast the Spanish feed, because they did not have the English rights.

That complicates it even more. I didn't look to see what channel it was actually on, but that would make sense. Still, imagine the confusion when you turn ESPNHD on and it's playing a Spanish broadcast.

ESPN simulcasts the ESPN Deportes Spanish-language feed of the WBC ?

is there an english feed of ESPN Deportes?

ESPN simulcasts the ESPN Deportes feed of the WBC.

2013-03-11 09:06:16 PM

What_Would_Jimi_Do: ESPN simulcasts the ESPN Deportes feed of the WBC.

And since ESPN could only be simulcasting the WBC from ESPN Deportes, this can be further simplified to

"ESPN simulcasts the WBC.  Racist twitter shiatstorm ensues."

And since the WBC is the only baseball thing happening right now, this can be replaced by

"ESPN simulcasts baseball game.  Racist twitter shiatstorm ensues. "

But since ESPN Deportes is the only ESPN network with rights to air the WBC, and therefore any baseball, the only theoretical way ESPN can air it is by simulcasting ESPN Deportes.  Therefore we simplify to:

"ESPN airs baseball game. Racist twitter shiatstorm ensues. "

Since the internet can't react to anything without racism, we get next:

"ESPN airs baseball game.  Twitter reacts."

But really, any time a bunch of people watch a televised sporting event, they're just going to react on twitter.  So we can get by with

"People watch baseball game on ESPN".

We need to keep the ESPN part, since there was also baseball airing on MLB network at the time.  We need to keep the baseball part, since there were also basketball games that night.  But perhaps we can eliminate the "People watch" part, since no baseball game has ever gotten a zero rating.  So finally we get

"ESPN airs baseball game"

This implies everything.  The game must be the WBC, must be simulcast from ESPN Deportes, and therefore must be in Spanish.  And since a large chunk of Americans are racist assholes, the Twitter reaction will reflect this.
