Did it get cut off by some guy looking for his hand?

"Before he was let loose, a $3 water wing was attached to Mr. Stubbs' tail, since an abbreviated test earlier had him struggling to stay afloat."  ...to go along with the $10000 tail and $50000 software needed to design it and the $100000 paid to the engineer for doing so.

Its all in the hips

Why do I need a floatie to keep him from sinking. Seems to me that he's the one that needs the floatie.

"The fact he doesn't try to bite it (the tail) is a good sign," said Russ Johnson, president of the Phoenix Herpetological Society. "Learning how to use it is going to take a lot of training."

I had thought the Phoenix Herpetological Society to have been a Republican think-tank. Evidently I was mistaken.

Have you ever seen a whale with a polkadot tail?

FTFA:

X-rays later would reveal crushed vertebrae where Mr. Stubbs' spine came to an abrupt end, proof the tail was bitten off. It likely was done by another alligator

/obvious?

Nice engineering.

That way the other gators will stop making fun of him.

/He ate the reindeer who wouldn't let him play their games

DRTFA, but on another network here, they said the floatie was only going to be used until he got used to the tail.

One of the remarkable things about alligators... there's a lot of them out there.

Imma get that gator

This is one of the most idiotic things I've ever heard.  Why build a prosthetic for a gator, you know you can eat those things right? Seriously, there are people out there who can't afford prosthetic parts, and they are giving them to a cold blooded, man eating reptile?

/And nobody try to give me that "animal testing", there a hundred better animal for testing prosthetics, you know the type you can handle without risking needing a prosthetic yourself.

any prey would surely have noticed the bright orange water wing wrapped around the gator's tail

Not necessarily. Lots of things don't see color.

First of all the cost was 6k and was obviously funded by the organization.  So I don't see where the hate is coming from.  I think it's cool that we can help the thing.

Silly humans.

For a fraction of the money, they could have had a nice valise with matching shoes.

Now instead of floating in the water hoping he will be mistaken for a log, he has to pretend to be a lollipop.

It ain't gonna happen. I can see his eyes.

Why would I need a floatie if HE's going to sink?

Really? No one goes for the obvious MacGyver reference? The people who did this are called the Phoenix society, for fark's sake.

OMG. After I dunno how many years I finally got a green!

And yeah, I can see how some folks might be ok with him sinking.  But I think its cool.
And as infobahn pointed out, its just a temporary measure.  The guy who taught him to swim (!!!!) is going to work with him to teach him how to use the tail.
