If it's an appropriate type of wear for a semi-formal event, he should be able to wear it...

Under his cap and gown.

pciszek: The WindowLicker: We love to make fun of the Navy, but you will never hear me say bad things about any doc.  (even if their solution to everything is to drink more water and change your socks.)

They may have very good reasons for insisting that people do this.

Of course they do.  Most common Marine ailments can be cured by hydration and hygene.  However...

/Terminal lance is a brilliant webcomic, but much of the humor is best appreciated by Marines...

Hack Patooey: Living in a submarine hygiene is a joke,
you don't use shampoo and you don't use soap,

LOL, man I wish my step dad was still alive, he'd have loved this. 26 years in diesel boats. When he retired he was COB, and a plank-owner on USS Pickerel, SSN-524.

FTFA: "If I'm not going to be able to wear my dress blues, I'm just not going to walk. It's not that important to me," Hamlin said

Well if he doesn't care, and the principle doesn't care, and I know I certainly don't care; then why was this article created?

for once I am with a principal on something

(seeing a military uniform might traumatize those youths)

BillCo: I'm as patriotic as the next guy and probably more so than most of the Fark hippies, but I have to agree with the principal.  Let this guy wear his uniform and the next thing you know, some jerk is going to want to wear a clown suit.

Please present the Clown Suit Code of Conduct?

No Such Agency: DrPainMD:
Why would he want to do that? The day I got out of the service all my uniforms went into the garbage where they belonged.

I hope you kept the boots.  I wore mine all winter for years, saved me a lot of money.

"boat smell."

Combination of industrial detergent, marine paint, oil and 100 other people's BO?  Just guessing here.

clkeagle: If going to the graduation ceremony is his goal, he should dress the same as his classmates.

This sounds more like he wants to wear his blues to impress everyone.

/My AF blues are for military or personal functions like my wedding. I own a civilian suit for other occasions.

This is exactly what he's trying to do

This kid is going to be absolutely eaten alive in boot camp (which I believe he starts today). Talk about putting the carriage before the horse. He's proud of something he hasn't even done yet and trying to showboat on top of it. I love how actual marines and vets and officers are in unison about how this should be handled and ignorant self-appointed patriots completely disagree and still think they are doing the military a favor by worshiping it like a cult. Poor guy has no idea what he has done. His sister put the final nail in his coffin. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he is forced out, gets the shiat kicked out of him, or trys to take his own life as everyone from this point on in his career sees what he has done. My my my...

Attention Whore/Welfare Seeking Marine- check
School Policy which Marines support- check
Crybaby Marine- check

"but there's at least one case where the Marine Corps has stepped in to order a Marine to wear a cap and gown. "

""We encourage Marines to follow the rules of the organization that they're working with, especially when it comes to community relations events. If there are rules and guidelines that community events have as far as uniformity and things of that nature, then we encourage Marines to abide by those rules."

Marine being unable to follow rules, goes off to war, comes back feeling entitled for protecting "our" freedoms with huge problems with authority- check check check

So much fail. Subby is a fail.

The DBS: Yes, he was a Devil Doc. He got out last year when he finished his deployment. He had some serious shiat go down during his stint with the Marines. They were in Helmand during the off season, so it wasn't as bad as some of their sister units, but they still lost two guys.

While i understand the sentiment, you are dealing with teenagers.
Allow this, and suddenly one of your students has gotten in touch with their Scottish roots and asks to graduate in a kilt.

/didn't read all comments, apologies if exact reference made

This kid just wants to show what a farking example he is.  Come back when you've done something and have your parade then, don't borrow the glory of those who came before you before you've earned it.

loser0: Typhoid: Interesting that he and his family don't get the concept of a UNIFORM that everyone is expected to wear at graduation.

This, only without the preceding sentence.

The cap & gown has a symbolic purpose. If you're making a special effort to attend the ceremony, participate in it properly.

You are so very right.  This guy just wants it to be about HIM.

Weaver95: We spend all that time and effort teaching kids to be mindless conformists, then expect them to be fully actualized adults once they graduate high school. We are a very strange society.

If by "we" you mean our public schools, then I agree with half of what you've said.  I think people are still expected to be mindless conformists after graduation.

Good for the principal on this one.  He is graduating from HIGH SCHOOL, not farking Marine Core Basic.  And the proper uniform when graduating from HIGH SCHOOL is cap and gown.  Farking jar head needs to grow up and start acting like a farking adult.
