Fark Party
Host: Paranoia-'
Description: Fark Philly Up - Spend the day in Philly taunting animals and ringing bells, or meet us at night for a couple drinks. Saturday, July 20th at Oscar's. - The Final Countdown
Date/Time: July 20, 2013 - 09:00 PM (local time)
Party Info: Let's Fark Philly Up. On Saturday, July 20th, a group of Farkers will be invading Philadelphia. E-mail, call, Facebook PM, thread-talk, text, or sext your favorite Farkers to find out what they'll be doing and make plans together. I plan on spending the day at the zoo trying to get the monkeys drunk, then meeting up with some Farkers for dinner before the party. You're not invited, but I'm sure someone will hang out with you.

READ THIS PART PLEASE THANKS
Please visit PhillyFarkParty.tk so we can have an idea of what's going on and what needs to go on!
Facebook Event for the party: https://www.facebook.com/events/581864765181068/

DAY EVENTS

I think a day at the zoo would be awesome, followed by a nice hometown bar. We can also pepper in the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, dinner somewhere, and other things. Throw out suggestions, someone will hang out with you.

The zoo is open from 9:30 am until 5 pm. Admission is $20. $15 if we get 15 people or more. Add $5 per person if we want to get a personal guided tour.

From 6:30 pm to 10 pm the Philadelphia Zoo is holding a Summer Ale Festival. During this festival, "you will sample regional craft beers and savor delicious local cuisine while surrounded by brilliantly colored birds, majestic great apes and exceptional big cats that call the Zoo's lush gardens home."

General admission is $65.
VIP admission is $95. The website doesn't specify the difference between VIP and General. I'll find out eventually and update this post.
Designated Driver gets in for $35.
Six GA tickets for $330. 15% discount.

Tickets will NOT be available for purchase at the door. This event is limited to those 21 years of age or older and children will not be permitted. Valid I.D. required.

All tickets include a souvenir tasting cup, on-site parking and shuttle service to and from 30th Street Station, the most eco-chic way to travel to the Summer Ale Festival.

Night Events/Fark Party

Oscar's Tavern
is in a great location with a parking structure across the street. It's 3 miles from the zoo, 1 mile from Old City, with restaurants all around it. Those participating in the day Farking can meet up for a dinner at the Oyster House or other nearby place and then take a short walk to the bar.

This is a CASH ONLY bar! I apologize if that makes things difficult for anyone. There is an ATM on-scene. I would prefer some place that takes cards but cash-only seems to be really popular with Philly dive bars. I don't get it.

Some info on parking:

On street metering runs until 10 PM. From 4 PM to 10 PM on certain streets, you can park for 3 hours (notable exceptions are Walnut and Chestnut.) Sansom street itself has limited parking on the street due to it being narrow and having a lot of construction going on right now. There are parking garages throughout the area. There's a link in the comments to a parking lot search engine that also lists prices.

It does get busy on Saturday nights in the area. It might be even more crowded since "Wicked" is at the Academy of Music that night.

We have 1 month to go, so we should probably start really stapling down the specifics! Use one of the resources listed above if you'd like to participate in any pre-party activities and we will do our best to facilitate things for you.

Location: Oscar's Tavern

I really hope the bar isnt 100+ degrees like sugar mamas was.

Kyro: In all fairness: You didn't come to Vegas 2 or NOLA.

That was due more to financial issues. Vegas 2 I was an unpaid intern. NOLA I just couldn't swing.

Oh so I can't have financial issues either!?!?

Dammit, Fark! Last party wasn't even in Philly, and this one is taking place while I'll be doing vintage base ball in Gettysburg all weekend!

2013-05-23 10:34:53 AM
I'll be there making awkward eye contact with all the attractive people in the room.

NOPE

2013-05-23 10:49:35 AM
Might make it out.

2013-05-23 10:49:57 AM

Tat'dGreaser: Lulz, I'm not driving three hours, getting a hotel just to meet you jerks

I'll be coming from 4 hours away. But I love Philly THAAAAT much. You Farkers I could take or leave.

ami5000: Ruca: i haven't been there since i was a kid. i'd LOVE to go back

It's still fun as an adult even though running through the huge heart is a bit more difficult.

Challenge Accepted.

Handsome Jack Manitoba: I'm a maybe for this.  This ultra, in Philly, is the same day, and I might be willing to cut out early to go drinking. (There's a shower on-site...)
The more I think about it, the more I'm getting the itch to do this. If I sign up (I'll post a follow-up in the next thread for this), anyone not going to the zoo is welcome to drop by and taunt me, though it might be kind of boring. Great people-watching at these things, though.

Whoa awesome! It'll probably be hot enough at that time that everyone else'll be sweated up too. You'll fit right in.

meow said the dog: mark12A: Definitely looking forward to this. My last fling in Philly, since later this year I'm moving to New Hampshire to help my fellow Free Staters build our Libertarian Paradise. I just bought an 80 foot single wide to move to my 20 acres.

Ya know, while the Fark 99% go to the zoo, the Fark 1% *could* get together to hit the Art Museum, the Franklin Institute, Barners, etc. on the Parkway....

Or a bar.

I'm definitely down for the 1% Experience. Although I propose Bar first, then museums, interspersed with more bars, and finally ending up at a bar.

2013-05-23 10:50:29 AM

WTF Indeed: I'll be there making awkward eye contact with all the attractive people in the room.

I see nothing half right about this plan!

I am willing to carpool with anyone from the Lehigh Valley or northward. Just no shifty looking people. If you look shifty, you are getting duct taped and you have to ride in the back.

You're such a whiner.

In all fairness: You didn't come to Vegas 2 or NOLA.

Well you didn't come to Vegas 1!

2013-05-23 11:07:51 AM

kxs401: So now that I officially have a job after months of unemployment, I think I can safely say I'll be there. I think I'll take the train in from Harrisburg, get a hotel room, and make a weekend of it. Can anyone recommend any hotels nearby?

I'm a big fan of Kimpton and their Hotel Palomar is 1 1/2 blocks from Oscar's. Alas, 'tis expensive. In fact, anything in the immediate area is going to be expensive.

2013-05-23 11:09:19 AM
So... we going to run up the Art Museum steps like Rocky?

LOL Short People Competitions

Either of you ever been to the Boston Children's Museum? The entire core of the building--I think it's three floors high--is a jungle gym. Parents drop their kids off at the first floor and meet them on the third as the kids climb up through the maze.* THAT is the ultimate Short People Competition as an adult.

* = based on memories well over a decade old.

/Children's Museum at the next Boston Fark party?
//Nevermind. That'd be a horrible idea.

2013-05-23 11:12:08 AM
I'd rather park my ass on a barstool at Monk's for the day :)

dwrash: I'd rather park my ass on a barstool at Monk's for the day :)

If that place was big enough to hold this thing, that'd be awesome.

Ludwig's Garten would have been phenomenal--was the best bar in Philly, IMO. Too bad they decided to close :(

2013-05-23 11:28:11 AM
I just realized this is the same weekend as Bimmerfest East 2013 of course : (

I'll be in OCMD thursday-monday and then Aberdeen, MD on saturday for the event.

It's probably better this way...

2013-05-23 11:51:37 AM
I'll be there, it sounds fun. I've been on Fark for 10+ years and haven't made it to a Fark Party cause I never was close to one until now.  My divorce will be almost final by the end of July, so you all can help me celebrate.

2013-05-23 02:38:00 PM
Only 8 blocks from my apartment BUT, I'll be at a conference in Atlanta, GA that weekend!  Why me!!!!!!

2013-05-23 05:34:42 PM

RexTalionis: I just want to put this offer out there: if you buy my drinks all night, I will pretend to like you and think you are smart, interesting, and handsome.

Deal!

2013-05-28 12:35:05 PM
I'll be at the Tavern dunno about the zoo...hate the smell mixed with the heat....

2013-05-29 09:57:05 PM
We're in. Probably do some historical stuff during the day and then meet you weirdos for dinner and drinks that night. Looking forward to it! Paranoia-', will there maybe be a FB event page to help keep track of goings on?

2013-05-30 03:50:09 PM
Will do my best to try to make this! On my calendar!

2013-05-30 03:58:45 PM

Tat'dGreaser: ami5000: Not having drill means you can't come?

It's like a three hour drive from my place. I drill at Ft Dix, NJ which is just down the road from Philly

If we go, maybe you could ride with us?

2013-06-02 01:49:55 AM
The NYC contingent has started working on me on this... I'm solidly a "maybe."

I don't think there was a definitive answer on whether it is illegal or not to sleep in a parking garage.

We're one month out. Time to knuckle down and buck up, or something.

Bukharin has generously reserved several one- and two-bedroom rooms at the nearby Inn at the Penn, about 2 miles from Oscars, for $149 a night. It seems to be the cheapest nice place available, however you're more than free to find your own hotel. If you would like one of the rooms Bukky has reserved feel free to contact him directly: bukharin[nospam-﹫-backwards]krafartlu*com

If you need help getting to Oscar's, either from a hotel, train/bus/plane station, zoo, museum, jail, etc., please fill out the little survey I put together at PhillyFarkParty.tk. I'm not hot-linking it because for some stupid reason different browsers react differently to .tk links. Some won't direct to them if you don't have www. Some won't direct to them if you do have www. So I'll let you put it in yourself. You'll figure it out; just don't leave me a message saying the link is broken. The survey is up and I just tested it myself a moment ago.

If you fill out that survey we can match up Farkers that are offering rides with those that need rides. We can also make group e-mails for people that want to go to the zoo, certain museums, or wherever. Trying to make things as easy as possible for you. Don't let us over-complicate it, though. You're still free to simply show up and get drunk!

Finally, we do have a Facebook Event created for this as well, to also help facilitate transportation and pre-party plans. https://www.facebook.com/events/581864765181068/

I hope to see you there!

I have my hotel and will be buying my train ticket soon. I plan to get there early in the day Saturday and leave on Sunday. I'm totally open to hanging out on Saturday and/or Sunday -- EIP if anyone wants to contact me directly.

Not entirely sure if I am going yet.

2013-06-20 09:30:43 AM
I'll probably be SEPTA-ing my way in and out that day because eff having to drive.

I always wonder about the Philly planners who came up with that acronym, which is alarmingly close to "sepsis" or "septic."

INEPTA.

I will still be dressed in 1860's garb and possibly drunk in Gettysburg. Stop reminding me, Fark!
