Fark Party
Host: Paranoia-'
Description: Fark Philly Up - Spend the day in Philly taunting animals and ringing bells, or meet us at night for a couple drinks. Saturday, July 20th at Oscar's. - The Final Countdown
Date/Time: July 20, 2013 - 09:00 PM (local time)
Party Info: Let's Fark Philly Up. On Saturday, July 20th, a group of Farkers will be invading Philadelphia. E-mail, call, Facebook PM, thread-talk, text, or sext your favorite Farkers to find out what they'll be doing and make plans together. I plan on spending the day at the zoo trying to get the monkeys drunk, then meeting up with some Farkers for dinner before the party. You're not invited, but I'm sure someone will hang out with you.

READ THIS PART PLEASE THANKS
Please visit PhillyFarkParty.tk so we can have an idea of what's going on and what needs to go on!
Facebook Event for the party: https://www.facebook.com/events/581864765181068/

DAY EVENTS

I think a day at the zoo would be awesome, followed by a nice hometown bar. We can also pepper in the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, dinner somewhere, and other things. Throw out suggestions, someone will hang out with you.

The zoo is open from 9:30 am until 5 pm. Admission is $20. $15 if we get 15 people or more. Add $5 per person if we want to get a personal guided tour.

From 6:30 pm to 10 pm the Philadelphia Zoo is holding a Summer Ale Festival. During this festival, "you will sample regional craft beers and savor delicious local cuisine while surrounded by brilliantly colored birds, majestic great apes and exceptional big cats that call the Zoo's lush gardens home."

General admission is $65.
VIP admission is $95. The website doesn't specify the difference between VIP and General. I'll find out eventually and update this post.
Designated Driver gets in for $35.
Six GA tickets for $330. 15% discount.

Tickets will NOT be available for purchase at the door. This event is limited to those 21 years of age or older and children will not be permitted. Valid I.D. required.

All tickets include a souvenir tasting cup, on-site parking and shuttle service to and from 30th Street Station, the most eco-chic way to travel to the Summer Ale Festival.

Night Events/Fark Party

Oscar's Tavern
is in a great location with a parking structure across the street. It's 3 miles from the zoo, 1 mile from Old City, with restaurants all around it. Those participating in the day Farking can meet up for a dinner at the Oyster House or other nearby place and then take a short walk to the bar.

This is a CASH ONLY bar! I apologize if that makes things difficult for anyone. There is an ATM on-scene. I would prefer some place that takes cards but cash-only seems to be really popular with Philly dive bars. I don't get it.

Some info on parking:

On street metering runs until 10 PM. From 4 PM to 10 PM on certain streets, you can park for 3 hours (notable exceptions are Walnut and Chestnut.) Sansom street itself has limited parking on the street due to it being narrow and having a lot of construction going on right now. There are parking garages throughout the area. There's a link in the comments to a parking lot search engine that also lists prices.

It does get busy on Saturday nights in the area. It might be even more crowded since "Wicked" is at the Academy of Music that night.

We have 1 month to go, so we should probably start really stapling down the specifics! Use one of the resources listed above if you'd like to participate in any pre-party activities and we will do our best to facilitate things for you.

Location: Oscar's Tavern
1524 Sansom St

So now that I officially have a job after months of unemployment, I think I can safely say I'll be there. I think I'll take the train in from Harrisburg, get a hotel room, and make a weekend of it. Can anyone recommend any hotels nearby?

2013-04-20 09:16:14 AM

doglover: Why do you have to taunt animals?

I don't know. We've been doing it for years on Fark. It's just habit, I guess.

2013-04-20 09:47:58 AM
If we're still on this side of the country by July 20th, we'll be there!

2013-04-20 09:51:07 AM
Is anyone going to the zoo?

2013-04-20 09:52:36 AM
That's been my plan all along. Zoo, then dinner, then the bar.

I clicked on quote... but apparently messed it up somehow.

Blushing Wall Flower: Is anyone going to the zoo?

Maybe! I'd like to get in on Saturday morning and will be looking for touristy stuff to do during the day.

2013-04-20 10:14:09 AM
Farkers going to look at animals at the zoo seems kind of ironic.

I'll be there.

Are dinner plans still the Summer Ale Festival at the zoo? Or are more flexible/affordable options on the table?

2013-04-20 11:07:38 AM
I planned on going to the Oyster House or some other nearby restaurant. The Summer Ale Festival is still an option for anyone that was interested in going, of course!

2013-04-20 11:30:00 AM
Maybe to bar.  No to zoo.  Giraffe restraining order.

2013-04-20 12:24:17 PM
Definitely looking forward to this. My last fling in Philly, since later this year I'm moving to New Hampshire to help my fellow Free Staters build our Libertarian Paradise. I just bought an 80 foot single wide to move to my 20 acres.

Ya know, while the Fark 99% go to the zoo, the Fark 1% *could* get together to hit the Art Museum, the Franklin Institute, Barners, etc. on the Parkway....

Or a bar.

Sasquach: Paranoia-': So here's what we need to know:

Who's interested in the Pre-Party party? The zoo, the museums, etc?
What bars are good in the area? Think cheap prices, lots of space, easy to get to.

Eastern State tour?...plenty of decent watering holes close by as well...

Eastern State? Dang, should have done this last year - my cousin had an installation there. It's gone now. http://www.easternstate.org/visit/regular-season/history-artist-insta l lations/judith-schaechter-battle-carnival-and-lent

And, yes, I'm shilling for a family member. Sue me, I'm proud of her.

2013-04-20 02:38:44 PM
Still a definite maybe. Would love to see the Mutter museum. Zoos are cool too. I always feel at home in a monkey house.

2013-04-20 07:14:20 PM
I just want to put this offer out there: if you buy my drinks all night, I will pretend to like you and think you are smart, interesting, and handsome.

Oooooh! I hope you like water, baby, cuz I'ma have you drowning in it!

Not literally. I just mean I'll, erm, "buy" you a lot of water.

Loophole abuse!

unfarkingbelievable: FredaDeStilleto: Sounds good.  Will there be any handsome TFers there?

Ha! That's an oxymoron. There is no such thing as a "handsome TFer."

What am I, chopped liver?

I'm a maybe for this.  This ultra, in Philly, is the same day, and I might be willing to cut out early to go drinking. (There's a shower on-site...)

The more I think about it, the more I'm getting the itch to do this. If I sign up (I'll post a follow-up in the next thread for this), anyone not going to the zoo is welcome to drop by and taunt me, though it might be kind of boring. Great people-watching at these things, though.

2013-04-21 09:41:42 AM
Might I suggest a late-night excursion to the Franklin Fountain?
Best ice cream in Philly and open until midnight every day.

I would travel from NYC and pay admission if Bill Burr showed up.

Mutter Museum is awesome.

Barnes Museum requires a reservation.

2013-05-23 09:33:15 AM
Oh right I forgot all about this.

2013-05-23 09:37:22 AM
f*ck yes. i'm in.

i do hope to be knocked up again by then, though, so if I am obviously i'm not drinking. I could be DD though. if i have not formed babby, obviously i AM drinking and will take the train.

2013-05-23 09:38:50 AM
Maybe I'll be there, maybe I won't. I like to be enigmatic.

2013-05-23 09:39:27 AM

Paranoia-': Who's interested in the Pre-Party party? The zoo, the museums, etc?

this depends on whether i'm pregnant. if i am i will probably just do the pre-party stuff and then head home. if i'm not, i'll probably come do the ale festival thing at the zoo and then hit up the bar with yall

2013-05-23 09:40:30 AM

Sasquach: Eastern State tour

been on this, it's pretty cool. i'd highly suggest it

another super awesome thing to see: the mutter museum

2013-05-23 09:41:39 AM

Half Right: There's also the Franklin Institute, which has fun exhibits, and their planetarium and IMAX screen always have interesting shows

i haven't been there since i was a kid. i'd LOVE to go back

2013-05-23 09:42:35 AM
I'd come but not if ami5000 is gonna be there...

It's still fun as an adult even though running through the huge heart is a bit more difficult.

2013-05-23 09:45:13 AM
Yeah at this point I'm a stern maybe. I'll be out of town all the previous weekend so I may just want to stay in, obviously not sure yet.

I likely would not be doing anything pre-party.

2013-05-23 09:45:38 AM

ami5000: Philly is very walkable but that's kind of a hike.

agreed - but for those who don't want to do public transportation, driving in the city isn't bad. parking can be a pain in the ass, but walking a few blocks from your parking spot isn't too bad

also, i KNOW someone's going to be wanting cheesesteaks, no? we rather like tony lukes and jims but that's just a matter of preference. i'm not that picky. if we go to jim's, though, someone will need to order for me because i swear to christ if they yell at me (and they will, if i delay more than 5 seconds) i will reach across the counter and choke a biatch out

Lots of cool people going to this.  I just want you all to know I'm sad I don't live close enough to make it.

Make sure everyone reminds RexTalionis how much older he looks than me.

Not having drill means you can't come?

2013-05-23 09:53:38 AM

Dougie AXP: Just be very careful where you park. The PPA is a bunch of god damn ninjas.

this is the damn truth. last time we went to reading terminal market we learned that just because a spot is not labeled "no parking" doesn't mean you can actually park there without getting a ticket

It's like a three hour drive from my place. I drill at Ft Dix, NJ which is just down the road from Philly
