Fark Party
Host: Paranoia-'
Description: Fark Philly Up - Spend the day in Philly taunting animals and ringing bells, or meet us at night for a couple drinks. Saturday, July 20th at Oscar's. - The Final Countdown
Date/Time: July 20, 2013 - 09:00 PM (local time)
Party Info: Let's Fark Philly Up. On Saturday, July 20th, a group of Farkers will be invading Philadelphia. E-mail, call, Facebook PM, thread-talk, text, or sext your favorite Farkers to find out what they'll be doing and make plans together. I plan on spending the day at the zoo trying to get the monkeys drunk, then meeting up with some Farkers for dinner before the party. You're not invited, but I'm sure someone will hang out with you.

READ THIS PART PLEASE THANKS
Please visit PhillyFarkParty.tk so we can have an idea of what's going on and what needs to go on!
Facebook Event for the party: https://www.facebook.com/events/581864765181068/

DAY EVENTS

I think a day at the zoo would be awesome, followed by a nice hometown bar. We can also pepper in the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, dinner somewhere, and other things. Throw out suggestions, someone will hang out with you.

The zoo is open from 9:30 am until 5 pm. Admission is $20. $15 if we get 15 people or more. Add $5 per person if we want to get a personal guided tour.

From 6:30 pm to 10 pm the Philadelphia Zoo is holding a Summer Ale Festival. During this festival, "you will sample regional craft beers and savor delicious local cuisine while surrounded by brilliantly colored birds, majestic great apes and exceptional big cats that call the Zoo's lush gardens home."

General admission is $65.
VIP admission is $95. The website doesn't specify the difference between VIP and General. I'll find out eventually and update this post.
Designated Driver gets in for $35.
Six GA tickets for $330. 15% discount.

Tickets will NOT be available for purchase at the door. This event is limited to those 21 years of age or older and children will not be permitted. Valid I.D. required.

All tickets include a souvenir tasting cup, on-site parking and shuttle service to and from 30th Street Station, the most eco-chic way to travel to the Summer Ale Festival.

Night Events/Fark Party

Oscar's Tavern
is in a great location with a parking structure across the street. It's 3 miles from the zoo, 1 mile from Old City, with restaurants all around it. Those participating in the day Farking can meet up for a dinner at the Oyster House or other nearby place and then take a short walk to the bar.

This is a CASH ONLY bar! I apologize if that makes things difficult for anyone. There is an ATM on-scene. I would prefer some place that takes cards but cash-only seems to be really popular with Philly dive bars. I don't get it.

Some info on parking:

On street metering runs until 10 PM. From 4 PM to 10 PM on certain streets, you can park for 3 hours (notable exceptions are Walnut and Chestnut.) Sansom street itself has limited parking on the street due to it being narrow and having a lot of construction going on right now. There are parking garages throughout the area. There's a link in the comments to a parking lot search engine that also lists prices.

It does get busy on Saturday nights in the area. It might be even more crowded since "Wicked" is at the Academy of Music that night.

We have 1 month to go, so we should probably start really stapling down the specifics! Use one of the resources listed above if you'd like to participate in any pre-party activities and we will do our best to facilitate things for you.

Blushing Wall Flower: I don't want to be secretly judged by hipsters while I drink. These better be some nice, friendly hipsters.

Let it be known; if any hipster stink-eyes or judges any Farkers, male or female, I will white knight the shiat out of them. If I don't lose too much weight by then I may still be an imposing figure. Also, I should have a solid beard. That helps.

2013-03-12 06:28:55 PM
It's a bit far. I guess the primary concern is whether I can find a place to stay if I do go.

2013-03-12 06:30:53 PM
Like others are saying, July is a ways away, but count me maybe--probably more for the daytime zoo, etc. trip than either the schmancy zoo evening or a late bar crawl.

Sounds good.  Will there be any handsome TFers there?

2013-03-12 07:30:36 PM
I'll be visiting my best friend (who lives right outside the city) a bunch this summer - maybe I'd be able to stop by!

No. But I'll probably be there anyway.

Johnny Brenda's, Standard Tap, Memphis Tap Room are hipster joints in Northern Liberties with great beers and food that are worthy of consideration, although not as central as Oscar's (the old Sam Adams Brewhouse/Oyster Bar?)  or Fergie's or McGillan's. But McGlinchey's or Dirty Frank's are another level of dive bar. Great places to meet up, reasonable prices, decent selection. Honorable mention: Khyber Pass.

And this will serve as a bookmark. If I'm not sleeping in a tent at a music festival, I'll be there. I live in Wissinoming, for you locals.

I rang the Liberty Bell back in 1970.  Our school trip did the obligatory Liberty Bell visit, and since it hadn't been rung since FOREVER, my cohort and I crawled under the rope and hurled the clapper into the uncracked portion.  GONG.

And then, suddenly, nothing happened.  I think our biatch teacher was envious, personally.  The tour guide looked a little stunned, but he was stoked.  Which is why you shouldn't smoke pot.

Anyway, I probably won't be there.  Again.

2013-03-12 07:57:51 PM
Sure. What the hell, I'm in.

Someone remind me of this shiat in three months.

2013-03-12 08:05:07 PM
I'll have to say "Maybe"

A good friend of mine runs Phillies oriented events, and there might be a bus trip that day to go up to NYC to see them play the Mets.

If there isn't a trip, I'll go to this.

2013-03-12 08:10:30 PM
Okay maybe.

Did anyone settle on a place?

I think sugar mom's is still okay.

Oscar's Tavern. Now we need to decide on the daytime activities!

Ah!

Never been there.

IamPatSajak: It's kind of a lame zoo IMO.

I would like to respectfully disagree. I always have a great time when I go there.

If it ends up being a destination, remember to wear comfortable shoes and sunscreen.

2013-03-12 08:50:04 PM
I'll definitely be there for drinking, but the more I think about it the zoo is a terrible idea.

2013-03-12 08:52:00 PM
Also, if you are by Eastern State or the museum area, The North Star Bar is a nice place for a drink or two.

2013-03-12 08:56:03 PM
Oscar's is great. Try the Long Island Ice Tea and then try another. Then see if you can go "around the world" with every drink on their cocktail place mat. I think they still have the $3.25 pint of Yuengling. Be careful, though, it fills up fast.

2013-03-12 08:57:41 PM
I don't remember the exact time but parking after around 6-7 is free at metered spots. Just be very careful where you park. The PPA is a bunch of god damn ninjas.

Put me down to Maybe

Gotta love another person who appreciates Dirty Frank's.

2013-03-12 10:44:42 PM
Dirty Franks and Oscars are good bars, but way too small given the crowds they get on a weekend night.  I'd recommend Drinker's West in University City.  It's closer to the 30th St station, takes credit, has a taco eating contest, and has plenty of room.

Ugh....too bad Stern didn't die on 9/11.

And Schultz didn't die via some random shooting in Seattle.

Just a 3 month reminder/bump (coming at you a week late).

The Fark Party will be at Oscar's Tavern. It is a cash only hipster/dive type bar. You don't have to like hipsters, it's just the perfect type of place to have a Fark Party at.

The Day Time activities are still in the air. I'm thinking, at this point, we should just make a list of fun things to do in Philly and Farkers can arrange their own hangouts through this thread. For instance, if anyone is interested in meeting up for dinner prior to the Fark Party, let me know!

Mr. Murder: Penis

That is not an appropriate day time activity, and I strongly suggest that no liters (or TFarkers, for that matter) take Mr. Murder up on his offer.

Considering it. Live in the Harrisburg area, would be interested in joining a carpool if anyone is coming through here.

For those who dont know, Frankford hall is a great time. Though the decor isn't quite authentic, they have an amazing selection of German beers and pretty good food.  The place is set in an old warehouse with glass rollup doors that lead to the outside. In nicer weather they open them up to the outside so the place kind of turns into a giant biergarten. The handfull of times that I've been, there's been German Society families show up in full liederhosen/dirndl garb which is kind of a cool addition to the overall experience.  I wouldn't consider it expensive. I think a liter of beer (about 2.5x normal beers) is $14.  There's also free sets of jenga and a ping pong table

http://frankfordhall.me/menu/#draft

I like the Eastern State idea.  Out of town farkers can park in a $5 for 24hr garage on Spring and 16th and its probably a 20 minute walk down museum mile to Eastern State, heading past things like the free library, art museum and Rodin Museum.  I think tours for ESP are about $20-25 and there's plenty of cool dive bars in the area.  Its not hard from there to get to FH/Norther Libs area and it is an easy jaunt on the Market/Frankford L train ($1.50) to get back to the main stations or the garage.

To get your money's worth out of a $65 zoo trip and beer tasting doesn't seem worth the time if you wanted to see other things.  Add to the fact that parking in center city is damn near impossible (Especially on Sansom on a saturday)

2013-03-28 08:08:01 AM
Put me down for a "maybe" this early in the game.

I'm in the Harrisburg area too, and hate driving in/around Philly.  Depending on the cost, I was thinking of just taking the train.

Screw it, I'll just park in Ambler and hit the rails.

I hear Club Onyx is nice.

Watch out for Sansom Street. Three of the four fire hydrants there are suspected of harboring hipster sympathies and the hipster Dunkin Donuts claims to have the best dark wave jungledubstep but it's really just a broken coffee maker.

Not in for the daytime, but likely in for the evening (pending wifely approval).
