Fark Party
Host: Paranoia-'
Description: Fark Philly Up - Spend the day in Philly taunting animals and ringing bells, or meet us at night for a couple drinks. Saturday, July 20th at Oscar's. - The Final Countdown
Date/Time: July 20, 2013 - 09:00 PM (local time)
Party Info: Let's Fark Philly Up. On Saturday, July 20th, a group of Farkers will be invading Philadelphia. E-mail, call, Facebook PM, thread-talk, text, or sext your favorite Farkers to find out what they'll be doing and make plans together. I plan on spending the day at the zoo trying to get the monkeys drunk, then meeting up with some Farkers for dinner before the party. You're not invited, but I'm sure someone will hang out with you.

READ THIS PART PLEASE THANKS
Please visit PhillyFarkParty.tk so we can have an idea of what's going on and what needs to go on!
Facebook Event for the party: https://www.facebook.com/events/581864765181068/

DAY EVENTS

I think a day at the zoo would be awesome, followed by a nice hometown bar. We can also pepper in the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, dinner somewhere, and other things. Throw out suggestions, someone will hang out with you.

The zoo is open from 9:30 am until 5 pm. Admission is $20. $15 if we get 15 people or more. Add $5 per person if we want to get a personal guided tour.

From 6:30 pm to 10 pm the Philadelphia Zoo is holding a Summer Ale Festival. During this festival, "you will sample regional craft beers and savor delicious local cuisine while surrounded by brilliantly colored birds, majestic great apes and exceptional big cats that call the Zoo's lush gardens home."

General admission is $65.
VIP admission is $95. The website doesn't specify the difference between VIP and General. I'll find out eventually and update this post.
Designated Driver gets in for $35.
Six GA tickets for $330. 15% discount.

Tickets will NOT be available for purchase at the door. This event is limited to those 21 years of age or older and children will not be permitted. Valid I.D. required.

All tickets include a souvenir tasting cup, on-site parking and shuttle service to and from 30th Street Station, the most eco-chic way to travel to the Summer Ale Festival.

Night Events/Fark Party

Oscar's Tavern
is in a great location with a parking structure across the street. It's 3 miles from the zoo, 1 mile from Old City, with restaurants all around it. Those participating in the day Farking can meet up for a dinner at the Oyster House or other nearby place and then take a short walk to the bar.

This is a CASH ONLY bar! I apologize if that makes things difficult for anyone. There is an ATM on-scene. I would prefer some place that takes cards but cash-only seems to be really popular with Philly dive bars. I don't get it.

Some info on parking:

On street metering runs until 10 PM. From 4 PM to 10 PM on certain streets, you can park for 3 hours (notable exceptions are Walnut and Chestnut.) Sansom street itself has limited parking on the street due to it being narrow and having a lot of construction going on right now. There are parking garages throughout the area. There's a link in the comments to a parking lot search engine that also lists prices.

It does get busy on Saturday nights in the area. It might be even more crowded since "Wicked" is at the Academy of Music that night.

We have 1 month to go, so we should probably start really stapling down the specifics! Use one of the resources listed above if you'd like to participate in any pre-party activities and we will do our best to facilitate things for you.

Location: Oscar's Tavern

As a note: regardless of what the final plan is, I will be going dry for this event. I will be coming up from Maryland and can DD some people if needed.

Ooooh, sounds like fun. I missed the last Philly thing. This is a little far out to definitely commit, but I would really like to go.

If I'm still around.
I do have a tendency to wander.
months or even weeks could find me in a different state.

2013-03-10 11:28:18 PM
and frankly, I wouldn't mind not being around here in July.
the Philly area and I have not really got along so well.

2013-03-11 12:02:07 AM
I'd fly for this one.

Count me in.

2013-03-11 12:26:00 AM
So here's what we need to know:

Who's interested in the Pre-Party party? The zoo, the museums, etc?
What bars are good in the area? Think cheap prices, lots of space, easy to get to.

2013-03-11 12:51:06 AM
I'll go with "maybe." as it's march and philly is far.

Any baltimore farkers wanna carpool?

I think I had this discussion with you re: Newark Fark Party. I'm up in Cecil County, but I can take you from here to Philly and back. :P

2013-03-11 01:15:32 AM
Would it cost extra for Fife and Murder sharing a room?

If so, no - those are two people that I don't want to be "sharing".

With each other, that is.

Eastern State tour?...plenty of decent watering holes close by as well...

I have a busy life and a 70 minute drive to the Zoo.

Put me down as  a "maybe."  Bookmarking thread and will see if I can arrange it.

It's kind of a lame zoo IMO. I am a firm maybe.

I'm 4 hours away, but I love Philly, so maybe me too. July is years away though.

IamPatSajak: It's kind of a lame zoo IMO. I am a firm maybe.

Yeah I'd be a fan of perusing the museums more than the zoo, and then barcrawling afterward instead of drinking at the zoo.

If you haven't been to the PMA, it's definitely worth it. Just down the Parkway from the PMA is the Rodin Museum, which is small but neat. Another option is the  Mütter Museum if you want to get your freak on. There's also the Franklin Institute, which has fun exhibits, and their planetarium and IMAX screen always have interesting shows. The Penn Museum is often overlooked but is well done.

And there are definitely many good watering hole options no more than a 15 minute walk from all those places.

2013-03-11 09:22:35 AM
The first party we threw there was at Sugar Mom's with about 10 farkers, I liked that place. We got there early evening and had most of the place to ourselves til it got busy later. Decent bar food. That weekend we also hit the Reading Market Beergarden, Eulogy Belgian beer bar (great food and a million beers), and the Mutter Museum to stare at oddities. I think Fife is still recovering from that. It's not for everyone but it's pretty neat.

The last party was in Downingtown about 45mins from the city at Victory Brewery, over twice as many people showed for that. The beer was a bit meh but the food was good and we had a great time.

We'll probably be living on the best coast by then but we'd be a maybe for the weekend if we're still here.

2013-03-11 09:37:17 AM
I'm going to have to pass on the zoo portion and probably the beer fesitval. $65 is a bit much. I'll be at Dirty Frank's with the hipsters.

2013-03-11 09:50:56 AM
Interesting. Had to skip our Philly trip this weekend. That said July is pretty far off. Definite most likely probably maybe.

2013-03-11 09:57:17 AM
Wow, you're gonna hit the Zoo on a Saturday?  That'll get the rage going.

2013-03-11 09:58:14 AM
You also might want to take into account that the zoo and some museums are close but Old City (where the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, Betsy Ross House, and anything...old will be) is the opposite side of the city. Philly is very walkable but that's kind of a hike.

2013-03-11 10:22:01 AM
I am interested but have a tough time plotting that far out on the calendar so count me as tentative and I hope work does not mess me up and send me somewhere.

I agree with the beer festival. I plan on going to the zoo, but skipping the beer festival. Even $35 is a bit much to just be the DD, after already spending the whole day walking around the zoo. And it's funny you said that about Dirty Frank's; I almost put that in my little (notes) but didn't want to pass judgement without having been there. It was top of my list originally until I realized it was cash only. That's when McGillin's topped it. Still, if Farkers don't mind Cash Only or there's an ATM on-site or nearby, I'd still like to go there.

As for distance, I plan on driving around the city. I'll have 4 open seats for any Farkers that'd like to tag along.

Sasquach: Eastern State tour?...plenty of decent watering holes close by as well...

I'll look into that and come back with a proposition if it seems feasible.

E-Brake: Sugar Mom's

How long ago were you guys there? I just looked it up and liked some of the reviews: "a steady stream of 90's music, pool tables, jukebox, and a very chill atmosphere," until coming across the locals talking about how they cut their menu in half, jacked up the prices, and the place got LOUD. $6 for a draft seems a little steep. Still, the descriptions of the venue itself sound pretty cool. It's on the 'possibility' list.

2013-03-11 11:52:48 AM
A Philly Phark that's *actually* in Philly?? I'm all in.  I'll even ride my bike, wrong way, on the sidewalk, just to get there....

Paranoia-': Any opinions on Oscar's Tavern?

Alright; I've looked into this place a bit more. I called them, they said they have plenty of room for a get-together of 20 or more people. It was listed in at least two different "Best Bars of Philly" lists, (one had this to say: "Let's see, the ceiling is caked with the brown ick of a few decades' worth of tobacco smoke; the clientele are salt-of-the-earth blue-collar types who could drink Bukowski under the table; and it's the home of the $3 honker, a 23-ounce pour of refreshingly cold lager or Pabst. If the top three most critically important aspects of any good bar are 1) ambience, 2) a polite and efficient waitstaff and 3) the ability to buy a round of drinks for friends with a $10 bill, Oscar's has all its bases covered. This place is a bar. It's a beautiful thing."), it's only 3 miles from the Zoo and 1.3 miles from Old City. There doesn't appear to be any dedicated parking, but Google Maps shows a structure across the street that looks like a multi-floor parking structure. There is also a lot of meter parking in the area.

Unless any Farkers have serious objections, I think this would be ideal. Just my two cents. =)

This is risky. PPA is notoriously evil.

I guess I should have mentioned that I have a deep, abiding love of dive bars. Unfortunately those tend to be the places where hipsters go as well. There is an ATM on-site in the bar.

I know a lot of cities stop charging at meters after a certain hour, often around 7pm. Does Philly do this, or are Meters checked 24/7?

$6 for a Yuengling. I could understand a nice snobby IPA or or something, but Yuengling? Eh.

Dive bars are fun. A much more comfortable attitude and atmosphere. Laid back, relaxing. I definitely feel ya on the love for them.

I don't park much in Philly because I take public transportation and because of the pain in the ass that is PPA so someone else would have better info about this.

I don't think too many people are going to want to walk the parts of Philly near the Zoo, unless you do a quick cross over the bridge toward the Fairmount/Art Museum area. I guess it depends on where you want to end up, and either way, definitely a hike.

That being said, I'll be keeping tabs on this. Its been a long time since I've gone to a Fark Party.

If its the same one I'm thinking of, over near Rittenhouse, Yelp says no to the plastic.

My favorite (read: smokin' hot) bartender just quit there after being an icon for years to move out-of-state... not a lot of space, but the best 'dive-bar' you're likely to find plus perpetual $3.25 22-oz Yeungling Happy Hour : )

I'll see if I can't tempt my friend to make a trip back just to witness the inevitable chaos a Fark crew will bring to the evening table haha

It was a couple years ago so it might've changed. We got there early in the evening when it was mostly deserted, had some apps and played some games, then split when it got crowded. The only other bar we hit was Eulogy but that's probably not good for a party, seems crowded and not real big. But I recommend hitting it for lunch if you have time.
