There are regular calls to ban circuses in Massachusetts. The train would come up from Hartford (?), unload a bunch of elephants in Cambridge, and they would walk along city streets to get to the circus site. If you're a kid it's the best thing in the world. If you're a petan it's tantamount to re-enacting the Holocaust.

You're missing the important part: the elephants got OUT of Hartford.

I love animal circuses.  This month makes nine years I've worked in the business, and PETA can go sit on a tack.  The vast majority of circus animals are extremely well cared for.  This I have seen with my own eyes.  So who are you going to listen to, PETA or some guy you don't know on the internet?

I'd listen to John Wayne Gacey's opinion on sex offender registries opinion before PETA's on anything.

They're not as good as bullfights, but circuses are pretty fun if you like animal cruelty.

If you read to your child, feed them, get them to bed and off to school, love them and make them feel loved and then suddenly beat them mercilessly for five minutes while allowing 10,000 people to yell at them, your child is not well taken care of.

I have to call bullshiat on this one. I've known the new owners for several years. Vargas hasn't had elephants in over a decade and no animals at all in the last 3 or 4.

Answer the question.

2013-03-11 04:27:46 AM
The adversity to circuses is typical of the 'take your activism home' mind-set. Potable water is scarce in a large part of the world (also where there are a lot of poor people), so what do you do when you can't do anything and you live in north west Europe (where it rains *all* the friggin time)? You take your activism home and you stipulate that people should put a brick in the flush basin of their toilets. Water in this part of the world will never run out, but whatever, you've done something and you feel good now. Circus animals are the same: they are well cared for but the animal species in question are endangered in their wild habitats and generally people should stay away from them there, but you're not there and you want to do something, so what do you do? You ban circuses. You did something, however futile, and you can feel good now.
