The bill also includes a section mandating counseling for school officials who fail to distinguish between guns and things that resemble guns. School officials who fail to make such a distinction more than once would face discipline themselves.

I want to send WIE to this bill. I'll even be bathed and sent to the bill's chambers

From the FARK FAQ:

"Boobies" time warpFor whatever reason message boards on sites like Fark are forever plagued with morons posting "Boobies" anytime a link is posted. Fark automatically turns the words "Boobies" into the word "boobies" and resets the timestamp on the message to some time in the future so that it isn't the Boobies anymore. When I was in school recess was spent playing war with my friends.  We were soldiers, not like real soldiers, more like fantasy style soldiers like from the Contra games (one or two soldiers who could single handedly take on entire platoons).  The swingsets were our fighter jets and monkeybars were either tanks or something else.  Our art projects were often pictures of soldiers or fighter jets and bombers.

According to the zero tolerance policies, we should have all been suspended following our first recess.  We never committed a crime, only one of just joined the military, and we all grew up to be normal people.  I spend grades 1-6 playing war on the playground to grow up to become an insurance salesman.  These policies aren't doing a damn thing.  Kids pretending to play war to to play with toy guns and swords aren't a danger.  It's kids being kids, just like they have been for ever.  I'm glad that someone finally stood up and said "This shiat needs to come to an end."  I just hope this doesn't get buried under party politics and fear mongering about the boogey man that is guns.

I think the reason they call the cops in these situations is to keep the parents from beating the crap out of the school administrator/teacher
that is perpetrating the stupidity.

Problem is, it's no longer in the realm of voters. Now it's in the courts and school boards, and that's more difficult to change.

2013-03-10 09:06:26 PM
One would think that school administrators would shy away from policies that make them look like total morons.

However the problem is that too many parents lack critical thinking skills and have been convinced by the media that crime is out of control and they think zero tolerance is the panacea to prevent crime,

For instance, I know many people like this, scared to let their kids walk to school a couple of blocks because "Chester the molester" is "out there",  You cannot change their minds with logic -  the fact that their kid has a much greater change of being killed in a road crash driving to the school then from being abducted. Those useless  "Amber Alerts" they hear on the radio add to the panic, too.

And school board members are more concerned of getting votes by pandering to these stupid people.

This. We played war all the time - tho' as the only girl, I never got to be a soldier, only a damn medic. This was back when Buck Rogers was on it's prime time first run so some of us would watch it and then we'd come to school the
next day and play Buck Rogers. We also played Super Friends. and GI Joe. And King of the Mountain on a big ass hill.

People have got to realize that kids don't need to grow up hermetically sealed. Let them be kids. Teachers need to
can the zero-thought policy and parents need to quit hovering and being litigious biatches.

Bingo.  Thing is, stuff like this happens all the time, and unless it hits the media typically nothing changes.

The one I remember was a kid that was suspended for drawing a gun.  It was primarily a picture of his mother, deployed at the time in Iraq, in full battle rattle, thus including a M-4.  Pretty good picture for the age.

Besides the pop-tart, a google search turned up numerous examples of-
-knives brought to school to cut lunch(sometimes packed by non-thinking parents, but the kids are still charged)
-drawings  of guns
-hands done into a gun shape
-gun backgrounds
-picture of a gun in a magazine

Etc...
"Zero tolerance/Mandatory sentence" policies are zero thought policies.  You can have 'zero tolerance' like the military has for sexual harassment - they MUST respond to any allegations, and take action against any perpetrators, but they have a wide selection of actions, which require thought to apply correctly.  We don't pay our administrators and teachers not to think.  I think that for every combination of 'zero tolerance/mandatory punishment' policy that applies, we should cut the pay of the school administrators by half - obviously their job isn't that skilled if all they have to do is blindly implement policy.

Firethorn: I think that for every combination of 'zero tolerance/mandatory punishment' policy that applies, we should cut the pay of the school administrators by half - obviously their job isn't that skilled if all they have to do is blindly implement policy.

I'd rather simply cut administrators IN HALF for each zero tolerance policy.

Schools, hospitals, government, companies: pretty much any organization that implements a stupid policy gets tied up and put on one of them old timey saw mill conveyor belts crotch first and has about 3 minutes to recant their stupidity or be cut in half by a giant spinning saw blade.

If you feel strongly enough about it to be cut in half slowly from the crotch up, maybe there's a chance your policy doesn't suck. But I doubt we'd even find out. That's why it's 3 minutes instead of 1. 180 is a lot of seconds to wonder how bad your impending doom will be. But I want the option there in case we find a martyr type with a really good idea.

Also, the guys in charge of the blade should all be dressed like Snidely Whiplash and the guys who take them off as RCMP.

I have instructed my children, 8 and 6, that anytime a teacher points at them, they are to dive to the ground screaming "GUN!" and act traumatized. They are to also do the "gun drill" anytime the teacher has anything in his/her hand ie; an eraser or calculator, ruler, etc..

Let's see how long this zero-tolerance bullshiat lasts when they have to discipline teachers for it. And even if the school does nothing it still works, because then the school board and the principal "Must not care enough about the children and are actively traumatizing them."

One news report and this is going national.

Looks like I'm going to be in a minority in this thread, but this legislation, while amusing, is a huge waste of the legislature's time.

Kids getting suspended for pastry guns or Hello Kitty bubble guns does happen, but it's a very unusual exception rather than the rule. True zero tolerance policies are stupid, but 99.99% of school administrators are smart enough to know this and don't enforce them as literal zero tolerance.

For every story about some silly suspension that makes the news, there are thousands of kids just being kids, which can include imaginary guns and is completely harmless. Stories like the pastry gun may offend our sensibilities (and rightly so), but this is far from a chronic problem in our society. Rather it's just an isolated school official with a complete lack of common sense.

We all agree that most kids who nibble a gun out of their pop-tart are not punished, and it sounds like you agree that the ones who are punished ought not to be.

So why is this not an excellent use of the legislators' time?  They need to pass some bills to get reelected, and most bills do more harm than good, and this one looks like it will do a little good.  Why not support it?

So why is this not an excellent use of the legislators' time?  They need to pass some bills to get reelected, and most bills do more harm than good, and this one looks like it will do a little good.  Why not support it?

I don't subscribe to the belief that "most bills do more harm than good."  What happened to the kid here was ridiculous, but this isn't exactly a common problem, and I'd hope that Maryland lawmakers could fill this time with a bill that would help more than one kid every couple years.

Heck, if they really want to do something productive, lawmakers should come up with a comprehensive school violence reduction act, that includes provisions to prevent bullying, reduce weapons in schools, educates teachers/students how to act AND protects pastry gun children.

doglover: Firethorn: I think that for every combination of 'zero tolerance/mandatory punishment' policy that applies, we should cut the pay of the school administrators by half - obviously their job isn't that skilled if all they have to do is blindly implement policy.

I'd rather simply cut administrators IN HALF for each zero tolerance policy.

Guess I'm just too nice.  I figure that hitting them in the pocket book would generally be sufficient.

That would be lovely, though I doubt it's as rare as you say.  When I was searching for a specific case like this (suspended for drawing a gun; said gun was his deployed mother's M-4, he drew her in full battle rattle, probably from a picture she sent home), I got HUNDREDS of cases.  Couldn't even find the one I was looking for, there were so many.

Supes: Looks like I'm going to be in a minority in this thread, but this legislation, while amusing, is a huge waste of the legislature's time.

True, but if it SAVES ONE CHILD then the idiots drawing a paycheck for not thinking should be thrown under the bus and have to pay for the fuel.

ciberido: Tyee: Silly Jesus: I'd be interested in seeing the political affiliations of these administrators that do this nonsense across the country.  I'd be willing to bet that 100% of them are liberal bed-wetters.

Every last one of them.

Remind me to gamble with Silly Jesus more often.

You think that someone without the requisite emotional sensitivities of a liberal could do something this stupid?

Won't pass since it seems to be filled with common farking sense.
