So, if I'm a 42-year-old man who wants to meet a 32-year-old cop, I should get online and pretend to be a 36-year-old man and look for the nearest 14-year-old girl, and then after we've established that we're attracted to each other, I'll reveal that my plan all along was to fake interest in the fake 14-year-old because I was REALLY looking for a 32-year-old cop, and I knew that the best way to find one was to oh my god i've gone cross-eyed what-

machoprogrammer: Happy Hours: This can only lead to one thing.

When pedophiles start chatting up 14 year olds on the internet they'll just have to be careful not to say anything that might incriminate them until they have a chance to stalk them first and make sure they really do go to junior high.

Or maybe not. I used to watch To Catch a Predator. Those guys were some seriously stupid (and creepy) people - especially that one who got busted by Chris Hansen twice.

I don't think they ever did it, but it would be interesting to hear some of their stats. How many people did they engage on the internet that seemed interested even after finding out they were talking to a minor but never followed through with a visit?

Ever spend time in a chat room? The guys that these stings catch are not pedophiles, but usually just desperate guys. They would be more likely to message a woman 20-30 than a 14 year old. These stings just make it so the DA looks like he is catching pedos, but in reality, pedos are more likely to be someone who actually knows the children.

Also, pedophiles are after children, not teenagers.

I haven't spent a lot of time in chat rooms. I did briefly back in the '90s. I was talking to women my age or slightly older. Even though I was much younger back then, if a 14 year old had popped up, I would have ignored her.

I just wasn't interested in girls that age when I was much older than that. That's why I don't believe Perverted Justice is entrapping people. Those people that get busted by them wanted minors. I am just wondering how many people wanted minors, but didn't go so far as to take the bait.

HempHead: How many people actually find minors on the Internet to molest?

Wrong question. How many people try to find minors on the internet?

Stats I have seen say 99% are known to the minor(e.g. relatives, priests, teachers, etc. ).

Yeah, the vast majority are but that's probably because those are the easiest prey/ I wouldn't be surprised if To Catch a Predator actually inspired some pedos.....or excuse me, what's the proper term? I always forget.

Anyway, there were probably some people watching who said to themselves? "Really? I can find young teens on the internet?  I just have to make sure they're not Chris Hansen."

I think that in order for this sort of sting to be legal, the cop should have to ACTUALLY BE a 14-year-old girl.

Think about it. A whole squad of 14-year-old girl cops trained to talk dirty online. It could be a whole new industry.

Which is why I don't think these sorts of operations are actually catching sexual predators, and are instead just catching idiots and dumb-asses. Real ephebophiles probably aren't this dumb. The ones who do get caught probably did it on the spur-of-the-moment without thinking above the waist. They're the kind of people who would get caught doing some other dumb thing if it weren't this.

The ones I find hilarious are the ones who try to claim that they were just worried about the girl because her parents left her alone, and they were coming to check on her and make sure she was okay.

Riiiight.

Verzio: Dumbass.  You don't ask, "Are you a cop?"  The cops are allowed to lie.

/You ask, "Hey, you were just roleplaying when you said you were 14, right?  You're really of legal age?"

That only really works when you are talking up the 'dad' or 'step-dad' who is pimping his minor and really, it would be a bit of a turnoff to an actual kid or someone pimping their kid, which is the last thing a real perv would want to do.  There are better ways of determining if it is a cop.

Plus, beware of circumstantial evidence.  You can still get convicted, legitimately, despite saying something like that, although obviously much more difficult.

The thing is, the real pervs who are going after young teens tend to want it so badly that they ignore all of the warning signs that they are talking to a cop.  Even when they do things to make sure the kid/dad is legit, they go ahead anyway when those things don't work out.

That is where you are wrong. I have read stories from former PJ members where they essentially begged the guy to come over and send pictures. Then they doctor the chat logs.

BTW, chat logs should never be allowed as evidence. They are beyond easy to doctor.

To expand on this, basically NBC wanted them to humiliate "pedophiles", so they paid them a bonus for each guy they could get on the show. Needless to say, this lead to some bad stuff to get the guys to come over.

The show actually led to a $200 million lawsuit when one of the guys refused to come over, then the cops and NBC went after him anyway, and he offed himself. His family sued NBC.

I lectured her on the dangers of putting herself out there like that. It didn't dawn on me until later that it was probably a cop.

Prosecutor Kills Himself in Texas Raid Over Child Sex

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/07/us/07pedophile.html?_r=0

Unlike some suspects in pedophile stings that appear on "Dateline NBC," Mr. Conradt had not actually met the person he thought was the teenager, but Sergeant Robertson said he planned to do so. Perverted Justice staff members found profiles from Mr. Conradt on AOL, Yahoo and MySpace.com, Mr. Von Erck said. He also said that he thought Mr. Conradt had tried to erase at least one online profile, on MySpace.com, a popular online social networking community used mainly by teenagers, in the moments before he shot himself.

I have mixed feelings about that show.  It reduced what is supposed to be a serious police investigation into pure television entertainment (and yeah, it was often admittedly hilarious).  And PJ was basically acting like vigilantes in a role that is supposed to be reserved for law enforcement.  And frankly, the  perps they were celebrating being nailed in these operations were such pathetic sadsacks.  I mean what teenager would have been remotely attracted to one of these morons?

Frankly, by the end, I was sort of hoping one of the perps was going to show up armed, flip out and takes out a couple of the PJ staffers (before being gunned down by the cops).  Unfortunately,  it never happened.

I really wish that stupid urban legend would die already.

On the other hand, by now, people should realize that if you're an adult, the 14 year old girl you're interacting with on the internet is probably a cop.  So maybe this is just an IQ test.  I mean, how long has Chris Hansen been on the air, and how many news stories are there like this?

And I'm with skum, on this one, on all points stated - with the added note that if you're on the internet trying to land a 14-year-old girl for sex, you're probably not likely to pass ANY IQ test.

Spad31: FTFA: The "girl" Brian Jansen, 36, was communicated with was a undercover detective...

Okay, goddammit. Seriously. The very FIRST sentence is a grammar clusterfark. What the fark happened to education in this country?

The university professors all got busted for meeting "14 year olds"?

There is a strong correlation between being edjumakated and being a prevert.

Jack_Knopf: I got pinged by a 14 year old a few years back. She wanted me to take her to a concert that night. She started sending me racy pics and said she would blow me in the car.

I lectured her on the dangers of putting herself out there like that. It didn't dawn on me until later that it was probably a cop.

/kids these days
//now get off my lawn

I would've said, "I'll take you to the concert... but nothing sexual."

Then i would've picked her up and said, "lol j/k"

/not really
