It was Starcraft, along with a young family, that eventually lead me to build my MAME cabinet in the late 90's.  I could no longer afford to disappear for hours on end to play a single game.  With Pac Man though- a lousy game is over in 5 minutes, a great game lasts maybe 20 minutes.  That, I had time for.

I lost a job to Elite II: Frontier. Admittedly, it was a part-time delivery job, and not having a job gave me time to really devote to becoming an Imperial Prince. I still feel dumb about that. Thank goodness I learned my lesson. I now waste my time playing Football Manager.

In terms of being a time thief FPS games as a rule are less bad than the god games like Sim or Civ but it's the MMORPGs that really win that fight.

If our society seems more nihilistic than that of previous eras, perhaps this is simply a sign of our maturity as a sentient species.
As our collective consciousness expands beyond a crucial point, we are at last ready to accept life's fundamental truth: that life's only purpose is life itself.

I lost an entire year of my life to that game. A glorious year.

A college friend of mine became so absorbed with WoW that she not only lost her part-time job, but she also failed out of multiple semesters at college (so then, she couldn't qualify for financial aid to make up for the job loss).

I haven't spoken to her in over a year but the last time I did, she was "trying college for another semester" and looked like she'd eaten a tauren cub/foal/whatever a baby tauren is called.

I have a friend who was "advised" to take a year off from Brandeis thanks to SimCity.

But Civilization is as close to time travel as we'll ever get. You click a few buttons, move some units around, and then BAM! it's 3am.

I finally lost interest in WoW last December after my guild had been on life support for a few months.  I'd be terrified to see how many total hours I put into that game on all my characters.

Watched a buddy of mine play the new Simcity for a bit yesterday, and had a grand time pointing out all the features it doesn't have that Simcity 2000 does.  I was also appalled at the size limit on cities now, I really can't believe how small it is.  I read some blurb by Will Wright on how he thinks it is a good idea and all I could think of is that PA comic where he announces a game that consists of him pissing on people.

Did you download and try out that 10 year old save-game (year 3991AD) that has been circulating for a year or so? It WAS AWESOME. Took me almost another hundred game years to beat.

The sea... vast, mysterious... and full of wealth! And the nations of Planet send their trade across it without a thought. Well, the sea doesn't care about them, so it lets them pass. But we can give the sea a little hand in teaching the landlubbers a lesson in humility.

Physical cards?  No.  When I got heavy into it a few years ago, I made the mistake of spending way too much on decks and doing it offline.  Actually, I made a ton of mistakes back then.  (I could fill several pages with my mistakes.)  I ultimately concluded that I hate Standard and I hate Real Life MTG.  Way too much time dealing with decks, card libraries and organization, card sleeves, tokens, shuffling, life counters, etc.  When I gave up and tried MTGO, I realized that I wasted all of that time and money for an expensive lesson.

Nowadays, when I play MTGO, I play it mostly for Commander.

Diablo II is probably the game that I've put the most hours into over the years. Pretty sure I bought and the expansion right when they came out. Played on and off until Diablo III came out. Good, wasteful times.

I have no time to plan some stupid city! I've got to breach the magma sea so I can set up magma forges, finish the sealed off bedroom/office for my new vampire bookkeeper (decked out in his favorite zinc) and build a danger room to help fend off the elves when they get the balls to attack. And it's only four more years ingame until the first batch of useless children grow up!

2013-03-10 09:17:42 PM
CIV, CIV II, and Colonization were the strategy games that ate up A LOT of my time (I even had Civ on the SNES).  But when Ultima Online was released (well, about 2 months after release), that was when I first felt the real pull of a game where I felt I had to honestly play every second I had a chance.
