PowerSlacker: Great, a team managed by Joe Torre has a lead in a deciding game in Arizona in the ninth inning.  What could possibly go wrong?

Even though there's no guarantee they'll use the same qualifying rules for 2017, if they use the 2013 rules, both Canada and Mexico still get an automatic berth, as the only requirement was to win -a- game.

Well, the 2009 pools worked differently. They were straight double-elimination, which guaranteed exactly one winless team per pool. By default, those teams- Chinese Taipei, Panama, Canada and South Africa- were the last-place finishers.

MLB Network has been pretty consistent in saying that last place in each pool this time around is going to the qualifiers. Since MLB is the organizer, I'm going to go ahead and go with that. Which means Brazil, Australia, Spain and Mexico will have to defend their spots. (Of those four, Mexico was the only one to win a game.)

Australia eyes off its neighbour, sticks up its hand and says "um, can we do it on a continent-by-continent basis?"
